Chapter 48 - Chapter 48 — The Father's Truth

Author's POV

Three days had passed since the documents arrived.

Three days of questions.

Three days of fear.

Three days of Meera avoiding the truth.

She stayed close to Ethan.

Held his hand constantly.

Slept curled against him every night.

As if letting go would make her disappear.

But the truth waited.

Patient.

Inevitable.

Today, it would no longer wait.

---

Alessandro Moretti called them to his study.

The family gathered.

Sofia.

Isabella.

Luca.

Ethan and Meera.

The papers spread across the massive desk.

Photographs.

Records.

Decades of secrets.

Alessandro looked at Meera.

His eyes were kind.

But serious.

"We need to talk about your father, Meera. Your adoptive father. Rajesh Narayanan."

She gripped Ethan's hand tighter.

"What about him?"

"The documents we received—they're real. We verified them. Your father wasn't always Rajesh Narayanan."

"I know. You said. Witness protection. Different name."

"Yes. But there's more."

---

Alessandro pulled out a photograph.

Older.

Faded.

A young man.

Early twenties.

Standing outside a courthouse.

Looking scared but determined.

Meera leaned forward.

Studied the face.

Younger.

Thinner.

But unmistakably.

Her father.

"That's him. That's Appa."

"Yes. That was taken the day he testified. Against a rival family. Not the Morettis."

She blinked.

"What?"

"The documents were misleading. Deliberately. The family your father testified against was the De Luca family. Our enemies. Not us."

Ethan leaned forward.

"De Luca?"

"Yes. Twenty-three years ago, the De Luca family was running a human trafficking operation. Your father was a clerk in their warehouse. He saw things. Horrible things. Children. Women. Sold like cattle."

Meera's hand went to her mouth.

"He witnessed it all. Kept records. Secretly. For months. Then he went to the FBI. Testified in court. Put five De Luca captains in prison for life."

---

Sofia continued.

"The De Luca family wanted him dead. So the FBI put him in witness protection. Changed his name. Moved him to Chennai. Gave him a new life."

"But why did the documents mention the Moretti name?"

Alessandro smiled.

Cold.

Knowing.

"Because someone wants us to fight. Someone wants us to doubt each other. Someone sent those papers hoping we would tear ourselves apart over old wounds."

Isabella spoke.

"De Luca. It has to be. They're still bitter about losing those captains. They want revenge. And what better revenge than destroying the Moretti family from inside?"

Meera looked at Ethan.

At his family.

At the truth unfolding.

"So my father wasn't against your family?"

"No. He was against our enemies. That makes him an ally. A hero. Someone we owe a debt of gratitude."

---

Meera's head was spinning.

All that fear.

All that dread.

All those sleepless nights.

For nothing.

A lie.

A manipulation.

A game.

"Your father is a good man, Meera," Sofia said gently. "He risked everything to stop evil. He lost his identity. His home. His life. To do the right thing. You should be proud of him."

"I am proud of him."

"And he should be proud of you. The woman you've become. The love you've found. The family you're building."

---

Ethan pulled her close.

Held her tight.

"You see, little star? Nothing can tear us apart. Not lies. Not enemies. Not the past."

She looked up at him.

Tears in her eyes.

Relief.

Gratitude.

Love.

"I was so scared. I thought—I thought we were—"

"I know. But we're not. We're us. Just us. Always us."

She laughed.

Cried.

Laughed again.

Overwhelmed.

Free.

---

Alessandro stood.

Came around the desk.

Placed a hand on Meera's shoulder.

"You are welcome in this family, Meera. Not because of blood. Not because of duty. Because my son loves you. Because you love him. Because you are good. And in our world, good is rare. Precious. Worth protecting."

She nodded.

Couldn't speak.

Didn't need to.

He understood.

They all understood.

---

Isabella hugged her.

Luca grinned.

Sofia kissed her cheek.

And Meera stood in the middle of this impossible family.

This family of monsters and killers and lovers.

Her family now.

By choice.

By love.

By destiny.

Later, alone with Ethan, she curled against him.

"So my father is a hero."

"Yes."

"And he's safe?"

"Safer now. We'll make sure of it. Moretti protection. Always."

She smiled.

Tired.

Happy.

Free.

"I love you, Ethan."

"I love you too, little star. Forever."

She closed her eyes.

Safe in his arms.

Ready for whatever came next.

Together.
