Night fell.
The Jiang Family villa was shrouded in silence, with only a few scattered bedrooms still glowing with light.
Guan Xuxu lay on her pink princess bed, gazing at the painted starry sky above her. It emitted a faint phosphorescence in the darkness dreamy, yet imbued with a sense of warmth.
The room had been designed this way so that a child waking in the middle of the night wouldn't be frightened by total darkness. From the layout alone, one could see just how much Father and Mother Jiang had looked forward to her birth.
This was a kind of familial affection Guan Xuxu had never experienced before.
In the Guan Family, no one had ever looked forward to her arrival. If anything, they had only looked forward to her death. After all, her death was the price to ensure Guan Ruirui's lifelong luck and prosperity.
Guan Xuxu closed her eyes, forcing herself to stop thinking about the people and affairs of the Guan Family. Instead, she began to ponder another question.
Ever since she had entered the Jiang Family, no one had mentioned her biological mother. Was she no longer in this world? Or was there some other hidden secret?
As she was thinking, a familiar cry pierced through her consciousness. Guan Xuxu's eyes snapped open.
As if realizing something, her expression shifted. She bolted upright, grabbed her jacket, and ran to the window. That was the direction the sound had come from.
Opening the window, she took one look at the pitch-black night sky. In the next second, a Yellow Talisman appeared out of thin air in her hand. She tossed it into the sky and quickly chanted under her breath,
"Heaven and earth are clear, the universe unites, I follow the decree, let the cool breeze come!"
With the Clear Wind Incantation finished, she braced herself with one hand and leapt from the third-story window without a moment's hesitation.
An instant later, a gust of wind wrapped around the Yellow Talisman and flew back toward her. Guan Xuxu's falling body was suddenly enveloped by a draft that cradled her, steadily lowering her until she landed firmly on the ground.
By a second-story window, Jiang Su was holding his phone with both hands, "fighting" desperately alongside his brothers. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of something falling from the floor above. He subconsciously turned his head, but that split second of distraction was enough for a "Killed" message to pop up on his screen.
"My god!"
Jiang Su shrieked and lunged out of his chair. Remembering who lived upstairs, he stormed to the window, intending to see what kind of trashy thing his unrefined cousin had thrown down.
He planned to pick it up and throw it right back in her face.
However, when he leaned out, he saw a figure quickly darting through the garden. Before Jiang Su could get a closer look, the figure had vanished.
Jiang Su stared wide-eyed at the spot where the shadow had disappeared.
"What the hell?"
Though he was addicted to games, Jiang Su had excellent eyesight. Why did that silhouette look so much like that charlatan, Guan Xuxu?
And when did she even get downstairs?
At the main entrance, Guan Xuxu sprinted out of the gate and ran in a specific direction.
From a distance, she could see a large three-story villa. It was currently ablaze with light, and as she drew closer, she could hear faint sounds of chaos coming from inside.
"Awoo! Awoo!"
Hearing that familiar cry again, Guan Xuxu quickened her pace and arrived at the villa's main gate. Looking through the iron fence, she saw several bodyguards chasing a small creature as it scurried around the garden.
Seeing one of the guards pull out a telescopic baton and prepare to strike, Guan Xuxu's face fell. She shouted through the gate, "Don't touch him! He's mine!"
As she spoke, she instinctively reached for another talisman. However, before she could act, a muffled voice came through the guards' intercoms. One of the men made a gesture, and the bodyguard who was about to strike immediately retracted his baton.
In the next second, the iron gate opened automatically. Guan Xuxu hurried inside, and the little creature that had been surrounded by the guards bolted toward her.
Hidden in the shadows until now, the little fellow finally revealed its true form.
It was a snow-white little fox with a round body and a plump, fluffy tail. It was even wearing a tiny pet backpack that was clearly stuffed with items, swaying back and forth as the fox ran.
The little fox scurried to Guan Xuxu's feet and began climbing up her legs, letting out a series of aggrieved "ying-ying" sounds. There was no trace of the fierce creature that had been snarling at the bodyguards just moments ago.
Guan Xuxu felt helpless as she scooped him up, supporting his backside. She found it strange; with a fox's sense of smell, it shouldn't have been possible for him to go to the wrong place.
Just as the thought occurred to her, a flash of Golden Light caught her eye.
Guan Xuxu looked up and saw a massive, familiar cluster of Golden Light standing in the villa's foyer.
Taking a closer look, she realized it was a person. An acquaintance.
Chu Beihe the Golden Light Big Boss, the Great Demon King.
This was actually his house?
Chu Beihe's Golden Light seemed even more dazzling in the darkness of the night. It took Guan Xuxu a moment to adjust her vision.
Holding the little fox, she stepped forward, feeling a bit embarrassed.
"Young Master Chu, I'm sorry. This is my pet fox. He came looking for me, but he must have found the wrong house."
Chu Beihe looked at the young woman in her thin pajamas. She had obviously left in a hurry, having only managed to throw a jacket over herself. As she held the little fox, her clothes were slightly wrinkled and marked with a few faint paw prints. His brow furrowed slightly, though his face remained unreadable.
"He doesn't look like he found the wrong place," Chu Beihe said.
His voice carried the deep, raspy resonance of an ancient pine tree, sounding somewhat cold and distant in the night air. His pale eyes swept over the fox in Guan Xuxu's arms.
Guan Xuxu followed his gaze and looked down. She saw that Hu Piaoliang, who had been whimpering a moment ago, was now stretching his neck out, trying his hardest to get closer to Chu Beihe.
His fox eyes were fixed intently on Chu Beihe, glowing bright and dark.
Guan Xuxu had no doubt that if she weren't holding him, the little fox would have already lunged at the Golden Light Big Boss.
In an instant, she understood why the fox had "gone to the wrong house." He had clearly been lured in by the Golden Light!
"Hu Piaoliang!"
Guan Xuxu issued a low, warning growl and tightened her grip.
I haven't even managed to bask in this Golden Light yet, and you're already trying to mooch? In your dreams!
The scolded fox finally retracted the fur that had been bristling toward Chu Beihe. Although he stopped struggling to get closer, those beautiful eyes continued to stare longingly at the man.
Guan Xuxu thought he looked quite pitiful and subconsciously took a step forward. "Actually, he just really likes handsome people..."
To her surprise, the moment her foot moved forward, Chu Beihe, who was standing in the entrance, took a subtle half-step back.
Guan Xuxu froze mid-motion, her lip twitching slightly.
Was she... being rejected?
She looked down at the little fox in her arms, which had gotten a bit dirty from scurrying around all night.
Guan Xuxu thought with absolute certainty: The Big Boss is definitely disgusted by the fox. That has to be it.
