Chapter 2: The Whispering Woods and the First Harvest
The Whispering Woods was a Grade-F Dungeon located just outside the Safe Zone's reinforced walls. For most 15-year-old students, it was a rite of passage—a place to test their initial bonds against Shadow-Rabbits and Bramble-Snakes.
Leo stood at the shimmering green portal, his two companions by his side. Samuel was vibrating with excitement, his Armored Badger digging its claws into the dirt.
"Remember the plan, Sam," Leo said, his eyes glowing with a faint golden hue as he activated Sovereign's Insight. "We aren't just here to clear the dungeon. We're here for the materials."
[Target: Whispering Woods (Grade-F)]
[Status: High Humidity; Mana Saturation 12%]
[Rare Material Detected: Moon-Shadow Salt (Location: Lunar Grotto)]
[Rare Material Detected: Iron-Oak Nut (Location: Heart of the Forest)]
The Battle of the Brambles
As they entered, the light shifted to a dim, emerald haze. The trees were massive, their bark etched with glowing runes.
"Movement at two o'clock!" Sam yelled.
A pack of Bramble-Snakes (Grade-F, Level 5) slithered from the undergrowth, their scales looking like jagged thorns.
"Sam, let your Badger take the lead. Use Earth-Toss to disrupt their formation," Leo commanded. Because of his academic genius, Leo naturally fell into the role of the tactician.
"You got it! Boris, Earth-Toss!"
The Badger slammed its paws down, flipping the soil and sending the snakes tumbling.
"Cloud-Snail, Mist-Screen!" Leo called out.
The small snail on Leo's shoulder pulsed, releasing a thick, cooling fog that blinded the snakes.
"Rusty-Fox, Embers!"
The fox leaped with surprising agility, its fur glowing a dull orange. It spat small bolts of concentrated heat, hitting the snakes' soft underbellies.
[DING!]
[Battle Finished! Experience Gained.]
[Snail Level: 10 -> 11]
[Fox Level: 12 -> 13]
[System Points Gained: +50]
The Lunar Grotto: The First Evolution
They reached a hidden cave where the light of the outside world didn't reach. Instead, the walls were coated in a glowing white crust.
"There it is," Leo whispered. "Moon-Shadow Salt."
Leo used the Beast Guidebook function to carefully harvest the crystals. Most breeders thought this salt was only used for seasoning, but the System revealed its true purpose.
[Path of the Abyssal Void-Drifter]
Requirement: Level 10+ Snail, 50g Moon-Shadow Salt, 100 System Points.
Description: Transitions a physical-type Snail into a Space-type Drifter.
"Sam, come here," Leo called. He noticed a specific tree nearby dropping heavy, metallic nuts. "Your Badger has the potential for the Iron-Soul hidden path. Feed him those Iron-Oak Nuts while I process the salt."
"Wait, really? My teacher said those were indigestible!" Sam asked, eyes wide.
"For a normal pet, yes. But your Badger has a high stomach acidity. It'll reinforce his claws," Leo explained with a confident smile.
The Evolution Light
Leo sat in the center of the cave, placing the salt before his Cloud-Snail.
"Are you ready, buddy?"
The snail let out a soft whistle. Leo spent 100 System Points and activated Enchantment.
[DING!]
[Hidden Evolution Triggered!]
[Cloud-Snail -> Void-Drifter Snail (Grade-D / Rare)]
The snail was enveloped in a violet light. When it faded, the snail was no longer white. Its shell was now a translucent purple, looking like a contained galaxy. It didn't crawl on the ground anymore; it hovered a few inches above the surface.
[New Skill: Void-Slip (Passive)] – The snail can momentarily phase through solid objects.
Beside them, Sam's Badger let out a roar as its claws turned a dull, metallic gray. "Leo! His claws... they're like steel! We're going to ace the school exam with this!"
The Hidden Boss
As they prepared to leave, the ground shook. A Great Bramble-Bear (Grade-E, Level 15) stepped into the clearing. This was the dungeon boss—a creature usually meant for a 5-person team.
"Sam, stay back. Let's see what the Void-Drifter can do."
Leo's eyes flashed. He could see the Bear's weak point—a glowing mana-knot behind its left shoulder.
"Snail, Void-Slip through its defense! Fox, distract with Agility-Dance!"
The Bear swiped at the air, but the Snail simply vanished through the bear's paw and reappeared behind its neck, releasing a burst of spatial energy. The Fox blurred into a streak of red, nipping at the bear's heels.
Within minutes, the boss collapsed.
[DING!]
[Dungeon Cleared!]
[Loot Obtained: Grade-E Earth Core, 200 System Points.]
"We did it," Leo breathed out, looking at his evolved partners. "First dungeon, first hidden paths. Mom and Dad are going to love this."
