Chapter 28 - Oviraptor × Brake?

The newly arrived Carcharodontosaurus had once been Greg, the emergency ward guard.

When Ivan decided to ram Yuliel with the ambulance, he had already noticed that the emergency guard was gradually being consumed by the dinosaur infection.

Instead of turning him into a Velociraptor, Ivan transformed him into a Carcharodontosaurus—a dinosaur with far sharper teeth and far greater aggression.

Although it lacked the towering height of the real creature and therefore appeared less terrifying than the giant prehistoric version, those serrated jaws could inflict damage that Velociraptors simply couldn't match.

After all, Velociraptors weren't famous for their bite force.

However, the type of dinosaur Greg became wasn't what excited Ivan.

That choice had been made with a simple thought.

What truly surprised him was something else.

When the Carcharodontosaurus entered Ivan's field of vision, Ivan issued it a command to use Nen.

And the dinosaur executed the command perfectly.

Yuliel, who had not yet fully completed his transformation, saw the aura wrapped around the Carcharodontosaurus.

Something seemed to click in his mind.

His body began trembling uncontrollably on the ground.

"There's no need to get so excited," Ivan said calmly.

"I'm planning to turn you into an Oviraptor. I think it'll suit your abilities better."

Ivan looked at Yuliel with clear anticipation.

The Oviraptor was a dinosaur with extremely powerful forelimbs.

In Ivan's view, Yuliel's greatest strength was throwing projectiles.

Turning him into a dinosaur known for stealing eggs and hurling stones at targets seemed perfectly fitting.

Under Ivan's eager gaze, Yuliel's body finally began fully transforming.

But when Ivan looked at the dinosaur that emerged, he hesitated slightly.

Calling it an Oviraptor would be accurate.

Yet it looked far more like Kulu-Ya-Ku from the Monster Hunter world Ivan used to play before his transmigration.

Still, Ivan found the appearance even more appealing.

It matched his imagination better.

Watching the Nen around the Oviraptor gradually condense into Ken, Ivan nodded repeatedly.

He was extremely satisfied with Dinosaur Yuliel.

Unfortunately, Yuliel's injuries were too severe.

Although the wounds didn't appear on the dinosaur body, if Ivan reverted him back to human form without proper medical treatment, Yuliel would likely die shortly afterward.

That meant Ivan's earlier plan of extracting more information from him had fallen through.

Still, Ivan wasn't discouraged.

This hospital trip had already been extremely profitable.

First, he had discovered a new lead.

If he located the destination of the convoy he had seen earlier, he would likely uncover even more information.

Second, he had gained two Nen-capable dinosaurs, along with a large number of ordinary ones.

Those dinosaurs were now his combat force.

His insurance policy.

His weapons against the Phantom Troupe.

However, after experimenting briefly, Ivan realized something.

Although the two special dinosaurs could use Nen, they couldn't activate their unique Nen abilities.

They could only perform the basic functions of Nen.

Techniques that had become instinctive.

More complex abilities—those requiring specific conditions—simply couldn't be triggered.

Ivan found that understandable.

Even he only possessed a rough guess about their abilities and activation conditions.

Trying to force those powers out through the imperfect control granted by Scary Monsters was far too difficult.

Perhaps once he broke through the death Nen sealing his own aura, he could develop a Manipulation-type ability to control them more precisely.

Of course, that depended on his natural affinity.

Ideally, he would turn out to be a Manipulator, or possibly a Specialist or Emitter.

If his affinity lay in any of the other categories, forcing himself down the Manipulation path would become painfully inefficient.

Ivan also remembered something from Nen theory—

memory capacity.

In his understanding, it meant that every living being had limits.

Limits of talent.

Limits of energy.

Limits of lifespan.

Within those limits, developing abilities that suited one's personality, experiences, and talents produced the best results.

Forcing oneself to cultivate abilities incompatible with one's nature might still yield results.

But the time and effort required would multiply many times over.

Even then, the outcome might only reach what someone with the proper affinity could achieve effortlessly.

A simple analogy came to Ivan's mind.

It would be like forcing someone with poor academic aptitude but exceptional athletic talent to enter an elite university through academic scores alone.

Their "memory capacity" simply wasn't meant for that path.

Even if they eventually succeeded, it would demand unimaginable effort.

Yet if they pursued sports instead, they might reach the same goal with far less hardship.

Ivan stopped thinking about it.

His gaze shifted toward the inpatient ward.

Now he had two options.

The first was to sneak over and personally investigate where the trucks had gone.

The second was to capture someone there and force them to reveal the convoy's destination.

From the moment Ivan entered the hospital to the defeat of Greg and Yuliel, less than half an hour had passed.

He had kept careful track of the time.

Even if the Phantom Troupe was tracking him, they couldn't have arrived this quickly.

Which meant he still had time to explore the hospital.

Meanwhile, the Compsognathus he had sent to follow the convoy had not yet reported that the trucks had reached their destination.

Another concern lingered in Ivan's mind.

Was the connection between him and his dinosaurs distance-limited?

If they traveled too far away, would the Compsognathus lose contact with him?

With those thoughts in mind, Ivan began walking toward the inpatient ward.

But before leaving, he noticed something.

The dinosaur-driven car he had sent earlier was still driving down the road.

Farther and farther away.

Only then did Ivan realize something.

He had forgotten to teach the Compsognathus how to brake.

They had figured out the clutch and accelerator.

That alone was already pushing the limits of their intelligence.

Adding a brake pedal would require a level of precision that neither the dinosaurs nor Ivan's control could manage.

Still, Ivan was satisfied.

The dinosaurs had executed his simple mechanical commands perfectly.

So he simply ordered them to jump out of the moving car.

He had no intention of retrieving the sedan anyway.

After all—

he now had a better vehicle in mind.

Those trucks transporting the corpses looked far more useful.

However, as Ivan walked toward the inpatient ward, he didn't lower his guard.

After all, they had practically torn the place apart moments earlier.

Yet the workers over there were still calmly loading cargo into the trucks.

They merely kept watch over the surroundings.

That alone was enough to keep Ivan cautious.

Especially since he had seen a Nen user among the convoy earlier.

Which meant he needed to stay on full alert.
