Chapter 16 - Between Words Left Unspoken

That afternoon was quieter than usual.

After the liveliness of afternoon tea and the lingering laughter in the garden, most of the family had returned indoors.

Some went to the music room, others chose to rest, and for the first time that day, the garden felt almost empty.

Mary of Teck walked slowly along a narrow path lined with summer flowers.

Her steps were light, composed as always.

Yet this time, she was not entirely lost in thought.

As if… she were waiting for something.

In the distance, footsteps approached.

Heavier.

More certain.

Mary did not need to turn to know who it was.

"Lady Mary."

George.

Mary turned.

"Your Highness."

The formality remained, yet it no longer felt rigid.

George stopped beside her.

For a few seconds, neither spoke. Only the soft sound of wind moving through the trees.

"I hope I am not disturbing you," George said at last.

Mary shook her head gently.

"No. I was just walking."

George nodded.

"May I join you?"

Mary looked at him for a moment.

Then answered simply,

"Of course."

They began walking side by side. Their steps naturally fell into rhythm without needing to be arranged.

"I don't particularly enjoy crowds," George said suddenly.

Mary smiled faintly.

"Neither do I."

His eyes shifted toward her.

"I should have realized that earlier."

Mary turned slightly.

"Realized what?"

George paused, as if carefully choosing his words.

"That there is someone who… sees the world in the same way."

Mary did not answer immediately.

But her pace slowed slightly.

"Not many people notice that," she said softly.

George nodded.

"Yes. Not many."

Silence returned.

But this time, it was not because they had nothing to say.

It was because they did not need to rush to fill the space between them.

They stopped near a small wooden bench beneath a tree.

George gestured lightly. Mary sat first, followed by him.

For a while, they simply looked ahead.

At the quiet garden, and the sky slowly changing color.

"I often think…" George began, then stopped.

Mary turned slightly toward him.

He took a breath.

"The life we plan… can change in a single night."

Mary lowered her gaze for a moment.

She understood that better than anyone.

The word we in his sentence lingered more than it should have.

As if he was not speaking of a future beside her—but a future shared.

"Yes," she said softly.

"And yet we still have to continue it."

George looked at her.

"I don't know if I am continuing it correctly."

Mary finally turned to face him fully.

"In my opinion… there is no right or wrong way," she said gently.

"Only what we choose to do after."

Simple words. Yet deeply honest.

And for George, more meaningful than he expected.

For the first time, he did not feel the need to hide his thoughts.

"Or our feelings?" he asked quietly.

Mary fell silent.

The question lingered in the air, heavier than anything before.

She did not avoid it, but she did not answer immediately either.

"I think," she said slowly, "when it comes to that… one must be careful with what one allows the heart to feel."

George nodded, as if he already knew the answer—but still needed to hear it.

"And if we cannot ignore it?" he asked again.

Mary looked ahead, no longer at him.

"Then…" she paused, her voice lowering, "we must make sure it is not something we will come to regret."

Silence followed once more.

But this time, it felt different.

Deeper. More real.

George looked at Mary.

And in that moment… without doubt, without confusion, he finally understood something he had long avoided.

This was not merely closeness.

Not habit.

Not something temporary.

It was real.

And he could no longer pretend otherwise.

Beside him, Mary remained calm.

Yet within her, she too knew…

That this conversation had changed everything.

No declaration.

No promise.

But a shared understanding that could no longer be undone.

The evening ended like any other day.

Yet for both of them, nothing was the same anymore.
