Chapter 36 - Chapter 35: Diglett's Protection

After leaving Gringey City, Ash and his companions passed through a valley where a massive reservoir was currently under construction.

The gargantuan dam was already taking shape, but a thick sense of tension permeated the air. Suddenly, several dull explosions echoed from the distance.

They followed the sound and encountered a worried foreman. He was loudly recruiting passing Trainers. "Are there any powerful Pokémon Trainers here? We need help driving away the Diglett! They're sabotaging the construction and digging holes everywhere! The pay is excellent!"

Ash, who was intimately familiar with the original story, immediately realized that this was no simple case of Pokémon being a nuisance.

Just as he was about to step forward and explain the situation, a familiar, slightly mocking voice rang out.

"Hmph, I wondered who it was. So, it's you, Ash." Gary approached with his cheerleaders in tow, his expression as arrogant as ever. "Tasks like maintaining public facilities and ridding the people of pests clearly require an excellent Trainer like me. You should just stick to your 'friendship games'."

Having said his piece, Gary walked confidently toward the foreman and expressed his willingness to help.

The foreman was overjoyed and immediately gathered a group of Trainers, including Gary, to prepare for a "clearing" operation against the Diglett colony.

The group arrived at the area where the Diglett were most active. Sure enough, they saw numerous Diglett and Dugtrio digging near the construction site, causing parts of the foundation to become dangerously loose.

"Go, my babies!" Gary and the other Trainers tossed their Poké Balls one after another.

However, something bizarre happened.

Whether it was Gary's Wartortle or the Pokémon belonging to the other Trainers, the Poké Balls merely flashed with light a few times. The Pokémon inside resisted, refusing to come out and fight!

"What's going on? Wartortle, come out right now!" Gary was both shocked and furious. The other Trainers looked at each other in bewilderment, completely unable to understand the situation.

Only Ash had a clear understanding of the truth. Through his Aura Power, he could clearly sense that it wasn't just the Diglett; all the Pokémon in this entire region were filled with a collective sense of sorrow, anxiety, and a fierce will to protect.

"It's not that they're unwilling to fight," Ash said, stepping forward, his voice calm yet filled with conviction. "They are using this method to protest. They know that once this reservoir is completed, the vast forest upstream will be entirely submerged. Countless Pokémon will lose their homes. The Diglett aren't digging to cause trouble; they are trying to protect their home!"

The foreman and the Trainers, including Gary, were stunned.

"That's nonsense! How could Diglett possibly understand such things?" the foreman retorted, though his voice lacked its previous certainty.

"If you don't believe me, come with me tonight," Ash said, his gaze steady.

That night, the moon shone bright and clear.

Ash led the skeptical foreman, Gary, and the others to the edge of the forest upstream from the reservoir.

The scene before them was breathtaking. Hundreds of Diglett and Dugtrio were using their little claws and heads to carefully transplant saplings to areas with deeper soil and higher elevations. They were reinforcing the slopes, attempting to combat the impending flood in their own way. They were fighting for their very survival!

Watching this silent yet spectacular sight, the foreman was deeply moved. He finally understood why the Pokémon had refused to fight and realized the true meaning behind the Diglett's "sabotage."

"I... I almost became an accomplice in the destruction of their home..." the foreman whispered, his face flushed with shame.

At that moment, the ever-meddlesome Team Rocket leaped out of the shadows, sending out their newly evolved Arbok and Weezing.

"Since you lot won't fight, Team Rocket will be taking these Diglett for ourselves!"

"That's right! Arbok, Bite!"

"Weezing, Sludge!"

However, their aggression ignited the fury of the entire Diglett colony.

Countless Diglett and Dugtrio simultaneously used Dig and Mud Bomb. The ground collapsed in an instant as attacks rained down from every direction. Arbok and Weezing were immediately buried under a barrage of mud, left without any room to fight back. Team Rocket was sent screaming into the sky once again.

"What a loathsome feeling!"

Having witnessed the Diglett's determination and power to protect their home, the foreman finally made his decision.

He announced resolutely, "The reservoir project... is suspended immediately! We will re-evaluate the environmental impact and find a solution that does not destroy the Pokémon's home!"

Gary watched all of this play out, and for the first time, he didn't utter a single mocking remark. He gave Ash a long, deep look, recalled his Poké Ball, and left in silence, his heart heavy with complex emotions.

He realized that some things were far more important than mere victory or completing a mission.

With the crisis at the valley dam resolved, Ash and his friends resumed their journey. This time, their destination was Fuchsia City.

After a long trek, they finally arrived at Fuchsia City, a place famous for its nature parks and unique Gym. The city was surrounded by the vast Safari Zone, and the air seemed to carry the fresh scent of greenery and earth.

"So this is Fuchsia City," Brock said, consulting his guidebook. "The Gym Leader, Koga, is said to be a master of Poison-type Pokémon and a descendant of ninjas."

"Poison-types, huh... sounds like they might be tough to handle," Misty added, rubbing her chin.

Ash's eyes, however, were burning with determination. "It doesn't matter what type they are; we're going to get that Badge! And besides..." He looked toward the sprawling wilderness on the city's outskirts. "I heard there's a famous Safari Zone here, where many rare Pokémon live."

New challenges and new opportunities awaited them in Fuchsia City.

He was about to collect his sixth Badge...
