Chapter 39: That Time I Blasted "Only My Railgun" Across the Campus.
....
Seito had returned to his seat in Class D, planning to sleep away the morning. But after a while, a loud, tinny melody from outside the window jolted him awake.
"Ugh..." Seito rubbed his temples, his eyes flashing with irritation. "Why is the Light Music Club holding a concert during the break?"
"I heard the Principal gave them special permission," Hideyoshi replied from the next desk over. "They're entering some national competition, so they're using the break time to 'practice' in front of the whole school."
Seito sat up, his annoyance boiling over. He had been looking forward to meeting the cute, legendary members of a typical Light Music Club—perhaps some soft, tea-drinking girls?
He stood up and marched down to the courtyard. But when he arrived at the performance area, he froze.
"What the...?"
Instead of the adorable girls he expected, the stage was occupied by a group of frail-looking guys with heavy makeup and high-pitched, whiny voices. They weren't naturally feminine like Hideyoshi; they were just... delicate. And they were loud.
Seito's patience snapped. You dare wake me up with this mediocre performance?
Fine, If I can't sleep, nobody gets peace.
He turned around and sprinted back into the school building.
Two minutes later, Seito re-emerged from the equipment room, lugging a massive professional-grade speaker and a microphone. Behind him, Iori Kitahara and Hidenori Tabata from Class E followed, carrying a tangle of cables and an amplifier.
"Seito, are you sure about this?" Hidenori asked, looking toward the Light Music Club's stage. "This is basically an act of war."
"War? No, this is an intervention," Seito replied, handing Iori a USB drive. "Plug this in. I'm about to turn this campus into an EDM rave. If I don't get my nap, I'm making it everyone's problem!"
He signaled the boys from Class E to fan out into the crowd. "When I give the signal, you lead the chant. Let's show these guys what real 'Light Music' sounds like."
Seito grabbed the microphone, stepped onto a bench, and tapped it twice. The thud echoed across the courtyard, instantly drawing the eyes of hundreds of students—and the confused performers on stage.
"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!" Seito's voice boomed through the speakers. "I am Kirigaya Kazuto from Class 1-D! Also known as Kirito! ALL EYES ON ME!!!"
Up on the third floor of the school building, the real Kirito nearly fell out of his chair.
"THAT'S SLANDER! HE'S SLANDERING ME!" he screamed into the empty hallway.
Down below, Seito ignored the distant protest and raised his hand.
"A true anthem for true believers! 'Only My Railgun'! TO EVERYONE!"
The iconic, high-octane intro blasted through the speakers. The sheer energy of the beat hit the courtyard like a physical wave. Students who had been bored by the previous performance suddenly felt their legs twitching to the rhythm.
"Hanate! Kokoro ni kizanda yume wo...!"
The vocals kicked in—crisp, electric, and soul-stirring. Seito wasn't singing; he was performing the role of the Ultimate Hype Man. He didn't need to sing when he had the world's most iconic railgun behind him.
The crowd went wild. The "Otaku" contingency of the school was the first to react, their hands flying into the air.
"It's Biribiri! It's Misaka Mikoto's theme!"
"Is Kirito-kun actually trying to murder the Light Music Club's morale?"
"Who cares? This song is a masterpiece!"
As the song approached the bridge, Seito pulled a coin from his pocket and held it high above his head. The golden light in his eyes seemed to dance with the electric guitar solo.
"THE LIGHTNING THAT DANCES AT YOUR FINGERTIPS... IS MY ETERNAL FAITH!!!"
Right on cue, Iori, Hidenori, and the rest of Class E bellowed back from various corners of the crowd:
"THE LIGHTNING THAT DANCES AT YOUR FINGERTIPS... IS MY ETERNAL FAITH!!!"
The call-and-response was infectious. Within seconds, half the school was shouting the mantra at the top of their lungs.
"THE LIGHTNING THAT DANCES AT YOUR FINGERTIPS... IS MY ETERNAL FAITH!!!"
The chorus hit with the force of a thunderbolt. The frail performers on the main stage looked like they were about to burst into tears. Their instruments were drowned out, their delicate voices silenced by the sheer mass of the student body singing in unison.
Seito stood in the center of the storm, grinning like a demon. The courtyard had transformed into a stadium concert.
Up in Class 1-D, Yukino and the others watched from the window, watching the chaos unfold. They couldn't help but marvel at Seito's ability to turn a simple grudge into a school-wide revolution.
The lightning was dancing, and for once, the school was wide awake.
