Chapter 16 - THE DYING BREATH OF AN EMPIRE

The surface of Shinkai was no longer a paradise; it was a graveyard of twisted metal and burning silver. As Raizen and Yurina erupted from the earth, they were greeted by the thunderous roar of a hundred Alchemical Dreadnoughts. The sky was blotted out by the massive hull of the DSS Sovereign, which hovered like a dark moon over the island.

"Target sighted!" a mechanical voice boomed from the fleet. "The Experiment has breached the surface. All batteries... FIRE!"

A thousand shells, glowing with the violet corruption of the Black Fire, rained down.

Raizen stood on the shoreline, his liquid-silver hair flowing in the shockwaves. He didn't move. He didn't draw his sword. He simply raised his hand.

Wang Energy: The Silver Aegis.

Instead of a solid shield, the air around Raizen and Yurina began to distort. As the shells hit the invisible barrier, they didn't explode—they slowed down. They hovered in the air, their violet energy being drained into the silver runes on Raizen's skin.

"You want to play with fire?" Raizen's voice vibrated through the steel hulls of the ships. "Then burn."

With a flick of his wrist, the thousand shells turned white and shot back toward the fleet with ten times their original speed.

BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.

Ten Dreadnoughts were torn apart in seconds, their boilers exploding in a spray of steam and shattered iron. But the DSS Sovereign remained untouched, protected by a swirling vortex of black, iridescent smoke.

"Look," Yurina pointed, her voice trembling.

The center of the Sovereign opened, and a throne descended on a platform of glowing obsidian. Sitting upon it was a man—or what used to be a man. He was draped in robes of liquid gold, but his body was a hollow cage of white bone filled with a pulsing, black sun.

The Eternal King.

"My son," the King spoke, his voice sounding like the grinding of tectonic plates. "You have finally found the Black Fragment. You are the perfect union of the Void and the Tao. Come, give me your heart, and together we will overwrite the world."

"I am not your son," Raizen said, his feet leaving the ground as he floated toward the King. "I am the ghost of the clan you slaughtered. I am the silence of the island you poisoned."

"Sentimentality..." the King hissed. "The flaw of the prototype."

The King raised his hand, and the black sun in his chest flared. The gravity around the island vanished. Massive chunks of the earth began to float into the sky. Yurina struggled to stay on her feet as the world turned upside-down.

Black Tao Art: Gravity Collapse.

Raizen felt the weight of a thousand mountains pressing on his soul. His silver skin began to crack again. The black veins underneath started to glow. He remembered Kaelen's words: You have to be both the God and the Monster.

"Yurina! Get to the pods!" Raizen shouted.

"No!" she screamed, her vine-blade cutting through a falling piece of iron. "I am your shadow, Raizen! Wherever the light goes, the shadow follows!"

Raizen looked at her, and for a brief second, his glowing eyes softened. He reached deep into the core of his being, touching both the silver light of the Calyx and the black corruption of the King's experiment.

He didn't fight the darkness. He invited it in.

Ninjutsu Secret Art: The Twilight Emperor.

Raizen's body transformed. One half of him remained shimmering silver, while the other half became a swirling vortex of lightless black. He became a living Yin-Yang, a bridge between creation and destruction.

The pressure of the gravity collapse vanished. Raizen blurred forward, a streak of gray lightning. He crashed into the King's throne with the force of a falling star.

The King roared, his bone-fingers clawing at Raizen's throat. "You cannot kill me! I am the source! I am the Tao!"

"No," Raizen said, driving his hand into the King's chest, straight into the black sun. "You are just a man who forgot how to die. Let me remind you."

A massive explosion of gray light enveloped the DSS Sovereign. The dreadnought began to crumble, its steel turning into dust and its engines turning into flowers.

The final clash had begun.
