Chapter 2 - Sahasra

After the tumultuous and wild emotional rollercoaster we had just been on together, all I actually wanted at that point was to go back to the peace and quiet of my own house. My mind was still attempting to make sense of and piece together everything that had occurred when Vikram smiled warmly at me and said, "I'll drop you." Being completely drained and not having the energy to waste on any kind of argument or discussion, I simply nodded and we walked in silence to his car.

The drive was shrouded in an eerie silence—ominously quiet, so that the air seemed to be heavy with unspoken words. Neither of us said a word, so there was an almost tangible tension in the air. The radio was still turned off, and we were left to our own thoughts. The city lights outside whizzed by in a dazzling spectacle, while all I could clearly hear was the steady purr of the engine along with the soft, rhythmic tap of Vikram's fingers as they gently drummed on the steering wheel. I couldn't help but sneak a glance at him. His face was utterly inscrutable, and his eyes were straight ahead, as if he was intensely involved in attempting to put everything together in his mind.

As the vehicle slowed down and came to a stop just in front of my residence, I turned to face him and spoke, saying, "This is it."

He stared at the window for a second, his thoughts somewhere else, before focusing his eyes on me with wide open shock. "I hope you're just messing around and joking me," he replied.

I blinked in bewilderment. "No? Why?

He gestured his finger in the direction of the house that was situated next to ours. "That is my house," he explained.

I gazed in the direction he was staring. My jaw dropped.

You've got to be kidding or playing a joke on me.

"I'm not," he replied, as taken aback as I was.

We sat in silence for a couple of moments, each of us taking time to take in the strange and unreal situation unfolding before us. The man with whom I had developed an impromptu friendship today—the man with whom I had shared humor, exchanged surprises, and endured an unusual yet fascinating rapport—was my next-door neighbor.

Of course, I said to myself with a bit of dryness in my tone. It seems the universe has a certain undeniable taste for surprise plot twists that take everyone by surprise.

"Well," I softly grumbled to myself beneath my breath, "I guess my plan to just walk over and say hello and chat with the neighbors later this week is now totally foiled."

Vikram laughed, a brief startled sound. It was the first time he'd smiled since we got into the car. That lifted me a little, I don't know how.

Do you have plans for tomorrow? I asked, attempting to shift the mood of our discussion.

He nodded. "Yeah. What's up?

"On our birthday lunch," I reminded him with a hint of excitement in my voice. "We can go together and celebrate the birthday side by side."

"Really, that's a terrific idea," he said, clearly lighting up with enthusiasm. "Okay—here's the plan. You wear a gorgeous black dress, and I'll dress up in a sharp black suit. That way, we'll be perfectly coordinated."

I raised one of my eyebrows inquisitively. "It's a little too dramatic, don't you think?"

He smiled. "Well, today is our day. Let's be dramatic."

Okay, I said, smiling in spite of myself. "Black, then.".

"Sounds terrific," he responded eagerly, already having a good idea in mind. "Why don't we decide to go at 10:30 a.m.? Where we are going is quite far away—it's going to take us nearly an hour and a half to get there."

"That sounds just perfect."

We both nodded our heads in sync, and then. silence once more. But not the uncomfortable kind of silence this time. Instead, it was quite unexpectedly calm and peaceful. It was as if we had discovered some sort of harmonious rhythm amidst the surrounding chaos that pervaded us.

"Very well, then," he answered after a pause. "I shall look to see you tomorrow again."

"See you."

I opened the door of the car and stepped out onto the sidewalk, giving him a quick but cheerful wave as I made my way to my door. As I reached my door and closed it firmly behind me, I leaned back against the hard surface of the door and took a deep breath, exhaling slowly in an effort to let go of the tension.

What have we done?

In less than twenty-four hours, I had progressed from knowing nothing about Vikram existing to knowing that he not only shared the same birthday as me—but the same street. We had intersected in the most odd, most unreal possible way, and yet… it didn't feel like chance. It felt like something was beginning.

I went up, feeling relieved as I changed into my most comfortable clothes, which enveloped me in a feeling of comfort. After I had changed into those comfortable clothes, I sat on the edge of my bed, still struggling to accept the reality of everything that had just happened and trying on some level to believe it all. My eyes wandered over to the wardrobe, and almost instinctively, without really thinking about it, I got up and opened it up to retrieve my black dress. That dress was not only simple but also well-made—the kind of dress that made me feel like I actually did belong wherever I happened to be.

I put it down carefully on the bed, and then sat next to it. Vikram, who looked dashing in a new black suit, and I, who looked elegant in this stunning dress, were entering our birthday lunch a couple. The entire scenario felt like it was plucked straight out of a movie. It was an unusual and unexpected shift in a narrative that neither of us had authored for ourselves.

As I set my alarm for the following day with careful precision, I was reminded of the fact that I wasn't just anticipating the pleasure of lunch. I felt curious—curious not only about what more I could learn about Vikram but also about the things underneath about myself and my experiences.

I crept silently under the comforting and hot blankets, and for the first time in what felt like a lifetime, I did not worry about what would come next in the unknown. Rather than that nagging fear, I sensed a feeling of… anticipation.

Tomorrow was my birthday.

But then there was a voice in me that said it was not just a new beginning but the start of something completely different altogether.
