The road did not end.
Kai kept walking.
Step after step.
The ground felt real, but something about it was wrong. Too smooth. Too empty. Like it was made only for him.
The wind followed.
White petals moved slowly around his feet.
The voice came again.
"…you came…"
Closer now.
Not from behind.
Not from ahead.
From everywhere.
Kai stopped.
"I'm here," he said calmly.
Silence.
Then the light ahead flickered.
A figure appeared.
Not fully clear at first.
Just a shape.
Standing in the middle of the road.
Kai's eyes narrowed.
The wind around him slowed.
The petals froze.
The figure slowly became clearer.
A girl.
Long hair moving softly in the wind.
Wearing simple clothes, but different from this world.
Not from Bakula.
Not from his past memories.
Something else.
Something… personal.
Kai's breath slowed.
"…who are you?"
The girl didn't answer immediately.
She just looked at him.
Her eyes were calm.
But there was something inside them.
Something deep.
Something sad.
Then she spoke.
"You really came."
Her voice was soft.
But it carried weight.
Kai frowned slightly.
"You called me."
The girl nodded slowly.
"I did."
Kai stepped forward.
"Why?"
The wind moved again.
The petals began to fall.
The girl looked down for a moment.
Then back at him.
"You don't remember me," she said quietly.
Kai froze.
Something in his chest shifted.
"…should I?"
The girl smiled faintly.
Not happy.
Not sad.
Just… tired.
"You used to," she said.
Kai's grip on his sword tightened.
"I don't forget people."
The girl looked at him.
"That's the problem."
Silence.
The air felt heavier.
Kai's mind tried to search.
Memories.
Faces.
Moments.
But nothing came.
"I've never seen you before," he said.
The girl didn't react strongly.
She just nodded.
"That's what I thought."
Kai took another step closer.
The wind picked up slightly.
Her hair moved across her face.
"You made a promise," she said.
Kai's eyes sharpened.
"What promise?"
The girl looked at him deeply.
"That you would come back."
His heart skipped.
Something.
Something faint.
Like a memory trying to form.
But it slipped away.
"I don't remember that," he said.
"I know," she replied.
Her voice didn't blame him.
That made it worse.
Kai's chest tightened slightly.
"Then why are you here?" he asked.
The girl looked around.
At the empty road.
At the silent space.
"Because this place remembers," she said.
Kai didn't speak.
"The wind carries everything," she continued.
"Things people forget. Things people leave behind."
Her eyes returned to him.
"And people."
The word hit differently.
Kai's mind felt heavier.
"Who are you?" he asked again.
This time, his voice was quieter.
The girl hesitated.
For a moment, it looked like she didn't want to answer.
Then she did.
"My name… is Airi."
Kai repeated it silently.
Airi.
The name felt unfamiliar.
And yet…
There was something.
A strange feeling.
Like hearing a word you almost recognize.
But can't.
"I don't know you," he said.
Airi nodded.
"I know."
She stepped closer.
The distance between them closed slowly.
"You forgot," she said.
Kai didn't move.
"I don't forget important things."
Airi smiled faintly again.
"Then what does that make me?"
Silence.
Kai had no answer.
The wind grew slightly stronger.
Petals circled around them.
Airi looked at his sword.
"You're stronger now," she said.
Kai didn't respond.
"You weren't like this before," she continued.
Her eyes softened.
"You used to hesitate."
The words hit him.
Because they were true.
"I learned," Kai said.
Airi nodded.
"Yes. You did."
She looked at him again.
"But you also left things behind."
Kai's jaw tightened.
"I didn't leave anything on purpose."
Airi's gaze didn't change.
"I know."
That calm understanding…
It made his chest hurt more than anger would have.
Kai looked away for a second.
Then back at her.
"Why now?" he asked.
"Why show me this now?"
Airi looked up at the empty sky.
"Because you're at a point where choices matter," she said.
Kai frowned.
"Choices?"
She nodded.
"You're protecting them."
She meant Luna, Ron, Kenta.
Kai didn't deny it.
"Yes."
Airi looked at him again.
"You couldn't protect everyone before."
The words were gentle.
But they hit hard.
Kai's grip tightened.
"I know that."
Airi stepped even closer.
Now they stood only a few steps apart.
"But this time," she said softly, "you want to do it differently."
Kai didn't speak.
Because it was true.
"I won't fail again," he said.
Airi studied his face.
"You might."
Silence.
The wind stopped.
The petals froze mid-air.
Kai's eyes sharpened.
"I won't."
Airi didn't argue.
She just asked quietly,
"What will you do if you do?"
That question…
It had no easy answer.
Kai's chest felt heavy again.
He didn't respond immediately.
Because for the first time…
He didn't know.
Airi looked at him.
"You can't save everyone," she said.
Kai looked down slightly.
"I know that too."
"Then what will you protect?" she asked.
The question stayed in the air.
Kai's mind moved.
Not fast.
Not chaotic.
Just… steady.
Then he answered.
"The ones I can reach."
Airi's eyes softened slightly.
"And if you lose them?"
Kai's voice didn't shake this time.
"Then I keep moving."
The wind returned.
Soft.
Gentle.
Airi smiled.
This time, it felt real.
"You've changed," she said.
Kai looked at her.
"I had to."
Airi nodded slowly.
"That's why you're here."
Kai frowned slightly.
"What do you mean?"
Airi stepped back.
The space around them began to shift.
The road started fading.
"You passed the first part," she said.
Kai's eyes narrowed.
"First part?"
Airi didn't answer directly.
Instead, she looked at him one last time.
"You still don't remember me," she said quietly.
Kai stayed silent.
"But that's okay," she added.
The wind grew stronger.
Her form began to blur slightly.
Kai stepped forward.
"Wait."
She stopped.
For a second.
Kai hesitated.
Then asked,
"…were you important to me?"
Airi didn't smile this time.
She just looked at him.
Very quietly.
"Yes."
The word was soft.
But heavy.
Kai's chest tightened again.
"Then why did I forget?"
Airi's form flickered more.
"Because sometimes," she said, "people forget what hurts the most."
The space around them began breaking apart.
The road vanished piece by piece.
The wind roared.
Petals scattered everywhere.
Kai reached out slightly.
"Airi!"
She looked at him one last time.
Her voice came through the wind.
"Next time… remember."
Then she disappeared.
Kai stood alone again.
But this time…
It wasn't empty.
The wind surrounded him.
Stronger.
Louder.
But not violent.
Controlled.
Responding.
Kai closed his eyes.
Took a deep breath.
When he opened them again…
The space shattered.
Luna, Ron, Kenta, and Kai stood together again.
Back in front of the gate.
All breathing heavily.
All changed.
No one spoke at first.
The silence was heavy.
Then Kenta broke it.
"That was… not fun."
His voice was quieter than before.
Not joking.
Not loud.
Just honest.
Luna looked at him.
Then at Ron.
Then at Kai.
"You all saw something… right?"
Ron nodded slowly.
"Yes."
His eyes were calm.
But deeper now.
Kenta rubbed his arms.
"I never want to do that again."
Kai didn't speak.
He just looked at the gate.
Something in his expression had changed.
Not visible.
But different.
Luna noticed.
"Kai?" she said softly.
He didn't answer immediately.
Then he said quietly,
"This place doesn't just test you."
They looked at him.
"It remembers things you forgot."
The wind moved through them.
Soft.
Cold.
White and black petals rose into the air.
Mixing.
Spinning.
Reacting.
Ron stepped forward slightly.
"This isn't over," he said.
Luna nodded.
"I know."
Kenta sighed.
"Of course it's not over."
Kai looked ahead.
Beyond the gate.
Where darkness waited.
Where something else was watching.
"We passed the first trial," he said.
His voice steady.
"But the real one is ahead."
