The forest pulsed with danger.
Aurelia could feel it in every breath she took, in the way the air pressed against her skin, thick and suffocating. The night had grown darker, heavier, as if something unseen was closing in around them.
She tightened her grip on him.
The Alpha did not move away.
If anything, his body shifted closer, shielding her without hesitation. His golden eyes scanned the forest with sharp precision, every muscle in his body alert.
"They are not stopping," he said quietly.
Aurelia swallowed. "Who are they really?"
His jaw tightened. "Not just a pack. Not just hunters. This is planned."
Her heart skipped. "Planned? You mean someone sent them?"
Before he could answer, the trees rustled violently.
A shadow moved.
Then another.
And another.
Aurelia's breath caught as more wolves stepped into the clearing. These ones were different. Bigger. Slower in movement but more controlled. Their eyes did not glow wildly like the others. They watched. Calculated.
Hunted.
The Alpha stepped forward, placing himself fully between her and them.
"Stay behind me," he ordered.
"I already am," she whispered, her voice shaking despite her attempt to stay strong.
One of the wolves stepped forward.
Its fur was dark, almost blending with the night itself. Its eyes burned red, but there was something else there. Intelligence. Awareness.
It was not just following instinct.
It was choosing.
Aurelia felt a chill crawl up her spine.
"It is watching me," she said softly.
"It is watching us," the Alpha corrected.
The wolf tilted its head slightly, as if studying them. Then it growled, low and deep, the sound vibrating through the ground beneath their feet.
The Alpha did not flinch.
Instead, he took another step forward.
"You should not be here," he said, his voice cold and commanding.
The wolf's lips pulled back, exposing sharp teeth.
And then it lunged.
Aurelia gasped.
The Alpha moved faster.
He caught the wolf midair, twisting its body with brutal force before slamming it into the ground. The impact shook the earth. Leaves scattered. The wolf let out a pained sound before scrambling back.
But it did not run.
None of them did.
"They are not afraid of you," Aurelia whispered.
"They should be," he replied.
Another wolf charged from the side.
The Alpha turned instantly, striking it down with precise force. His movements were controlled, deadly, almost effortless. Yet Aurelia could feel it.
Something had changed.
This was no longer just a fight.
This was a test.
"They are waiting," she said, her voice barely audible.
"Yes," he replied. "For the right moment."
Her pulse raced. "What moment?"
Before he could answer, a deep, echoing howl filled the forest.
Everything went still.
Even the wolves froze.
Aurelia's heart stopped.
That sound was different.
It was not just a call.
It was a command.
The Alpha's body went rigid.
His golden eyes darkened.
"They are here," he said.
Aurelia's voice trembled. "Who?"
The trees parted slowly.
And something stepped out.
It was larger than the others.
Stronger.
Its fur was black as the night sky, and its eyes burned with a deep crimson glow. Power radiated from it in waves, pressing down on the clearing like an invisible weight.
Aurelia could barely breathe.
"This one…" she whispered.
The Alpha's voice dropped. "An Alpha."
Her heart slammed against her chest.
Another Alpha.
The black wolf moved forward with calm, measured steps. It did not rush. It did not attack. It simply watched.
Judged.
Aurelia felt exposed under its gaze.
"What does it want?" she asked.
The Alpha did not take his eyes off it. "To see if I am worthy."
"Worthy of what?"
His voice hardened. "Of you."
Her breath caught.
Before she could respond, the black wolf lunged.
The Alpha met it head on.
The collision was violent.
Aurelia stumbled back, nearly falling, but he caught her instantly with one arm while fighting with the other. The strength it took made her realize just how powerful he truly was.
And how dangerous this opponent was.
The black wolf struck again.
Faster.
Sharper.
Smarter.
The Alpha blocked, twisted, and countered, but this time, it was not effortless.
Aurelia saw it.
For the first time, he was being pushed.
Her chest tightened. "You are not winning."
"I do not need to win," he said. "I need to survive. And so do you."
The black wolf circled again.
Then it glanced at her.
Aurelia froze.
It saw her.
Not just as prey.
As something important.
Something worth taking.
The Alpha stepped in front of her instantly, his body tense.
"No," he growled.
The wolf lunged again.
This time, the Alpha roared.
The sound tore through the forest, powerful and commanding. He struck with renewed force, slamming the wolf back, his golden eyes blazing with something deeper.
Something primal.
"You will not touch her," he said.
Aurelia's heart pounded.
The air shifted.
The bond.
She felt it clearly now.
A pull.
Strong.
Unbreakable.
It wrapped around her chest, tightening with every second, connecting her to him in a way she could no longer deny.
"I feel it," she whispered.
His eyes flicked to hers.
For a moment, everything else faded.
"Good," he said softly. "Because now it begins."
Her stomach dropped. "What begins?"
The forest answered for him.
Another presence emerged.
Stronger.
Colder.
More dangerous.
A second massive wolf stepped into the clearing, its eyes glowing gold.
Aurelia's breath hitched.
Two Alphas.
The Alpha beside her stiffened.
"This is not a challenge anymore," he said quietly.
"This is war."
Fear gripped her.
"What do we do?"
He looked at her, something intense burning in his gaze.
"You trust me."
The two wolves moved at once.
The Alpha pulled her close.
And everything exploded into chaos.
Aurelia felt the world spin as power clashed around her, claws striking, bodies colliding, the ground shaking beneath them.
She held on to him with everything she had.
Because deep down, she knew one thing.
If she let go now, she would lose more than her life.
She would lose him.
And for reasons she still did not understand…
That terrified her more.
