Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Alpha’s University Mecry

The moment the ground shattered behind them, the fragile control in the clearing collapsed completely, because whatever rose from the depths was nothing like the others that had bowed before Aurelia, and the difference was immediate, undeniable, and terrifying.

It did not hesitate.

It did not wait.

It did not recognize.

It hungered.

Aurelia felt it before she fully saw it, a violent surge of energy crashing against her senses like a storm breaking loose, forcing the breath from her lungs as her body instinctively recoiled. The connection she had just begun to feel with the others snapped sharply, replaced by something far more chaotic, something untamed and hostile.

The bowing figures did not move.

But the thing behind them lunged.

It tore forward with a speed that made the air split around it, its form twisting and expanding as if it could not fully contain itself, its presence suffocating, overwhelming, and completely out of control.

"Aurelia, move," the Alpha's voice cut through the chaos, sharp and commanding, and this time, she did not hesitate.

She stepped back, her pulse racing, her mind struggling to catch up with what was happening, but the creature was already too close.

The Alpha moved faster.

He intercepted it mid strike, his power erupting in a way she had not seen before, raw and unrestrained, his control slipping just enough to reveal the full extent of what he was capable of. The impact sent a shockwave through the clearing, forcing the ground to crack further, the air to ripple violently as the two forces collided.

Aurelia staggered slightly, her balance shaken as the energy surged around her, but her focus remained locked on him, on the way he stood between her and the creature without hesitation, without doubt.

He did not question it.

He did not calculate the risk.

He simply protected her.

The realization hit her harder than it should have, cutting through the fear with something far more complicated, something that made her chest tighten in a different way.

But there was no time to dwell on it.

The creature struck again, its movements erratic, unpredictable, as though it was driven by nothing but instinct and hunger. The Alpha blocked it, countered it, forced it back, but it did not retreat.

It adapted.

It learned.

And with every passing second, it grew stronger.

"This one is different," the woman said quickly, her voice tight as she stepped forward, her gaze sharp, calculating. "It is not bound like the others."

The Alpha did not respond, his focus entirely on the fight, his movements precise, controlled, but there was no denying the strain beginning to show.

Aurelia felt it.

Through the bond.

A flicker of pressure.

A hint of exhaustion.

And something else.

Concern.

Not for himself.

For her.

Her chest tightened as the energy within her stirred again, reacting to the threat, to the danger, to the fact that he was fighting something he might not be able to hold back alone.

"I can help," she said, her voice unsteady but determined.

"No," he said immediately, not even turning to look at her. "You stay back."

The command should have stopped her.

Before, it would have.

But not now.

Because this was not just his fight.

This was hers too.

The creature lunged again, slipping past his defense for just a moment, just enough to break through the barrier he had created.

It was heading straight for her.

Everything slowed.

Aurelia felt the energy surge through her, stronger than ever, no longer hesitant, no longer uncertain. Her hand lifted instinctively, her breath catching as the power responded instantly, rushing to the surface like it had been waiting for her to finally stop holding it back.

"Stop," she said.

The word did not leave her lips like a command.

It exploded outward like one.

The air around them cracked, the force of it hitting the creature mid movement, freezing it in place as though something invisible had wrapped around it, holding it there.

The entire clearing fell silent.

Even the Alpha stilled.

Aurelia's chest rose and fell rapidly as she stared at the creature, her hand still raised, her body trembling under the weight of what she was doing.

"I told you," the earlier figure said quietly from behind the others. "They would answer her."

The creature struggled against the invisible force, its body jerking violently as it tried to break free, but Aurelia held it there, the power surging through her, burning, overwhelming, but controlled.

For the first time…

She was in control.

The Alpha turned slowly, his gaze locking onto her, and the look in his eyes was something she had never seen before.

Not just concern.

Not just authority.

Recognition.

And something deeper.

Something that made her breath catch.

"You need to let it go," he said, his voice quieter now, but no less firm.

Aurelia shook her head slightly, her focus locked on the creature. "If I do, it will attack again."

"Maybe," he said. "But if you do not…"

He did not finish the sentence.

He did not need to.

Because she could feel it.

The strain.

The way the power was pushing against her limits, demanding more, pulling more, threatening to spill over into something she might not be able to control.

Her breath faltered slightly.

And in that moment…

The creature broke free.

It roared, a sound that shook the clearing, and surged forward again, faster, more violent than before.

The Alpha moved instantly, stepping in front of her once more, taking the hit directly, his body absorbing the impact as he forced the creature back with sheer strength.

Aurelia's heart slammed against her chest. "You are going to get hurt," she said, panic rising in her voice.

"I will survive," he replied sharply. "The question is whether you will if you lose control."

The words cut through her.

Because they were true.

The power inside her surged again, unstable now, unpredictable, reacting to her fear, her doubt, her determination all at once.

She could not hold it like this.

She needed to choose.

The creature attacked again.

The Alpha blocked it, but this time, the force pushed him back a step, his control slipping just slightly, just enough to show that even he had limits.

And that was when Aurelia realized something that changed everything.

If she did nothing…

He would fall.

The decision came in an instant.

The energy surged through her one more time, stronger, sharper, clearer, and this time, she did not try to hold it back.

She directed it.

The force exploded outward, wrapping around the creature again, but this time, it did not just hold it.

It forced it down.

The ground cracked beneath it as it was driven into the earth, the darkness pulling it back, sealing around it as the energy tightened like a cage.

The creature fought.

It resisted.

But it could not break free.

Not this time.

Aurelia's breath came in sharp bursts as she held the power in place, her entire body trembling under the strain.

"Now," she said through clenched teeth.

The Alpha did not hesitate.

He stepped forward, his energy flaring as he struck the creature with a force that sent it fully back into the darkness, the ground sealing over it as the connection snapped.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Complete.

Aurelia's legs weakened as the energy drained from her, her body finally giving in to the exhaustion she had been holding back.

The Alpha caught her before she could fall.

For a moment, everything felt still again.

Safe.

But then he spoke.

And his voice was different.

"You should not have done that," he said quietly.

Aurelia looked up at him, confusion flickering across her face. "I saved you."

His gaze held hers, intense, unreadable.

"Yes," he said.

A pause.

A breath.

Then the words that made her chest tighten.

"And now they know exactly how powerful you are."

Aurelia's heart skipped.

The earlier figure stepped forward again, its presence as heavy as before, its gaze locked onto her with something far more focused now.

More certain.

"They always knew," it said softly.

Aurelia's breath caught.

"But now…"

It stepped closer.

"They have seen it."

The ground beneath them trembled again.

Stronger.

Wider.

And this time…

It was not just one thing rising.
