Chapter 2 - The Beginning Of Greatness (1)

Morning came. The Ninja Academy courtyard buzzed like a festival ground—parents gathered in small clusters, siblings waving from fences, proud smiles everywhere. The air felt lighter than usual, stretched tight with anticipation.

Inside the classroom, chaos ruled. Kiba was boasting at full volume, Akamaru barking in agreement from atop his head. Shikamaru looked like he regretted being born, while Choji calmly crunched through a bag of chips beside him. Sakura, Ino, and nearly every other girl—except Hinata, who sat quietly with her fingers pressed together—kept glancing at Sasuke and then pretending they weren't.

Shino remained perfectly still, murmuring softly as a beetle crawled across his sleeve. And in the back row— Naruto Uzumaki had both feet up on his desk, grinning like he'd already won something.

"Today's the day," he declared to absolutely no one who asked. "By sunset, you'll all be looking at the future Hokage!"

"Please don't jinx the entire village," Shikamaru muttered without lifting his head. Iruka stepped into the room, and the noise dropped by half.

"Settle down," he said, though there was a nervous energy in his own posture. "Today is the graduation exam. When I call your name, you'll come to the next room and perform the Clone Technique."

Naruto's grin flickered—just for a second. Clone Technique. He leaned back further, forcing a laugh. "Hah! Easy! I'll make, like, a hundred of 'em!"

From somewhere near the front, someone snorted. "You can't even make one." Naruto slammed his hands on the desk. "Shut up! I totally can!"

The exam began as one by one, students disappeared into the next room and returned with either a forehead protector tied proudly across their brow—or a tight expression they tried to hide.

When Sasuke's name was called, the girls erupted in cheers. Naruto crossed his arms. "Tch. I was gonna pass cooler than that anyway." Names kept being called. The room slowly emptied.

With each passing minute, Naruto's stomach tightened. "Naruto Uzumaki." He jumped to his feet so fast his chair nearly toppled over. "Watch closely! You're about to witness greatness!"

Inside the examination room sat Iruka and Mizuki. Naruto noticed Iruka's expression soften just a little. "Begin," Iruka said.

Naruto brought his hands together, forming the seal with intense focus. He forced every bit of chakra he could gather to respond. "Clone Technique!" Smoke burst across the floor. And there it was. One clone. Pale. Limp. Lying sideways like it had already given up on life.

"...What is that?" Mizuki asked flatly. Naruto stared at it. The clone blinked weakly. "Hey! Sit up straight!" Naruto hissed. The clone wheezed... then disappeared in a pathetic puff of smoke. Silence filled the room.

Iruka closed his eyes for a moment. "...Naruto. You fail." The words hit harder because it was Iruka who said them. Naruto laughed immediately—too quickly. "Ahahaha! Guess I went too easy on it! Didn't wanna embarrass you guys, y'know?"

Iruka's jaw tightened. "You may try again next year." Naruto shoved his hands into his pockets. "Yeah, yeah. Whatever." He walked out without looking back.

Outside, celebration filled the courtyard. Parents hugged their children as their new forehead protectors gleamed in the sunlight. Naruto stood alone on the swing near the Academy fence.

The swing moved gently, slowly. But inside him, everything was spiraling. A couple of parents nearby pulled their kids closer without even thinking. Naruto pretended not to notice.

He stared toward the Hokage Monument in the distance. "...Next year," he muttered when a shadow fell over him. "Rough day, huh?" Naruto glanced up. Mizuki stood there, smiling gently.

"Ah, it's no big deal!" Naruto said, grin snapping back into place. "I was just warming up!" Mizuki chuckled. "Iruka can be strict. But you know... there may be another way."

Naruto blinked. "Another way?" Mizuki leaned closer, lowering his voice conspiratorially. "There's a special test. Specially designed for... special students. A secret test. A chance to prove yourself to everyone. If you succeed, you graduate."

Naruto's eyes widened. "Seriously?!" Mizuki nodded. "There's a scroll sealed away in the Hokage's Tower. The Scroll of Seals. If you can steal it and learn a technique from it in one night... that would show your potential."

Naruto didn't hesitate. "Tell me how I steal it!"The sun dipped low when Naruto slipped into the Hokage's office. It felt ridiculous how easy it was. Much, much easier than looking at Iruka's eyes when he said fail.

The forbidden scroll was lighter than he expected. Naruto hoisted it onto his back and tied it securely with a rope, grinning to himself. "See? Easy." He scrambled out the window, barely avoiding knocking over a stack of paperwork.

Behind him, unnoticed for a moment, a guard finally turned toward the empty pedestal. And then— Alarms. Naruto bolted through the forest, laughing breathlessly as the evening air whipped past him.

"This is it!" he shouted to the trees. "When I show them what I can do, they won't ignore me anymore!" He ran deeper into the woods, heart pounding—not from fear, but from hope. Tonight, he would prove them wrong.
