Chapter 89 - Chapter 89: Echoes from Fontaine

[Since I am writing about other nations, I am adding a headcanon here (not sure if it exists in the original game). For the sake of Little Lovia, the people of Teyvat speak only one language, called Teyvat Common Tongue (Chinese). For writing, it is Teyvat Common Script (Simplified Chinese), and then each nation has its own national script.] (In short, it is assumed that everyone can understand Lovia's writing to avoid any language barrier issues.)

Fontaine, the edge of Erinnyes Forest, a small cottage by the water.

In the quiet room, Melusine Mamere was sitting in front of his small easel, carefully dipping his brush into pigments ground from special shells.

He held the brush in his small hand, focused on applying the colors.

What he loved to depict most were the feelings of Warmth in his mind regarding Father. Those unspeakable, soft emotions always flowed through the tip of his brush into vibrant pictures, making him feel very warm.

Suddenly, the hand holding his brush paused slightly.

A familiar ripple gently brushed across his consciousness.

It was Father!

Unlike the vague Warmth that his other sisters occasionally felt, Mamere's perception of Father's residual consciousness was much clearer and more acute. He could often "hear" intermittent "voices" that the other sisters could not, or rather, ripples carrying simple thoughts.

And at this moment, the ripple came again, carrying feelings of love, concern, and a hint of worry, incredibly real.

Mamere held his breath, his clear, large eyes unblinking, trying hard to capture that message crossing the boundaries of reality.

"...Liyue... child... stranded..."

"...different... weak..."

"...needs... time..."

Blurred words and fragments of thought were like bubbles rising from the seabed, gently popping within his heart.

Liyue? That was a very, very distant nation; he had heard it was completely different from Fontaine.

Father said there was a child... stranded in Liyue? Was it a Melusine?

Different from other Melusines? And very weak and frail?

Mamere's heart suddenly tightened.

He imagined a lonely Little Melusine in a far-off foreign land, with no companions, perhaps facing difficulties because of being "different," and maybe even in a state of weakness... Father must be worried about that Melusine!

This feeling of worry was so strong, transmitted through that invisible connection, that Mamere could no longer sit still. He put down his brush, not even bothering to tidy up his half-finished work, and his small figure hurried out the door.

He knew who he should go to: the powerful and just iudex who always cared for and looked after all Melusines, Lord Neuvillette!

Mamere strode through the streets of Fontaine. Passersby cast curious glances at the hurrying Melusine, but he had no time to care. There was only one thought in his mind: tell Lord Neuvillette quickly!

Finally, he ran panting to the Opera Epiclese. Given his status as a Melusine and the obvious anxiety on his face, the guards did not stop him. He made his way familiarly to the area outside Neuvillette's office and knocked gently on the door.

"Come in," came Neuvillette's steady voice from inside.

Mamere pushed the door open and walked in.

Inside the office, Neuvillette was sitting behind a large desk processing documents. Seeing it was him, a gentle inquiry flashed in his eyes.

"Lord Neuvillette!" Mamere ran to the desk, looking up with his small face, his tone urgent. "I heard it! I heard Father's words!"

Neuvillette put down his quill pen, his expression becoming focused. He understood the special significance of Elynas to the Melusines and knew of Mamere's unique Talents in perceiving his residual consciousness.

He leaned forward slightly and said in a slow, gentle voice, "Do not worry, Mamere. What did you hear? Tell me slowly."

Mamere took a deep breath, trying to organize his words: "Father said... in Liyue, there is one of our sisters! She is stranded there, and she seems... seems a bit different from us. Father feels she is very weak and might need help... Father seems to be calling out to her, but she doesn't seem able to return for now..."

He conveyed the keywords he had captured and the emotions he had felt to Neuvillette as clearly as possible.

"A... Melusine stranded in Liyue?" Neuvillette frowned slightly.

This was indeed unexpected news. Melusines usually lived in Fontaine and rarely left, let alone went as far as Liyue.

Furthermore, the descriptions "different" and "weak" caused a hint of doubt to rise in his heart.

Why would she appear in Liyue? Had some accident occurred that caused this Melusine to be stranded in a foreign land and in an unstable state?

Unable to return for now... because of what?

Neuvillette looked at Mamere's eyes, full of worry and expectation, and pondered for a moment.

Melusines were beautiful creatures that Fontaine was proud of; he had a responsibility to ensure their safety, no matter where they were.

Neuvillette stood up, walked around the desk to Mamere, and crouched his tall frame down slightly to meet the petite Melusine's eyes.

This small gesture caused Mamere's tense emotions to relax slightly.
