Chapter 90 - More gold crowns

Loreen's POV

Loreen was quiet for a moment. He looked back down at the pages and turned through them again, slower this time.

No war was being fought. No festival was approaching that would require stores of that size. The palace population had not grown in any meaningful way, save for Lady Candice and her two aides who had arrived recently.

The winter stores had already been stocked weeks before the cold came in, as they were every year. There was no reason on this earth for the numbers in front of him to be what they were.

Someone was draining the treasury dry. And they had apparently been doing it for long enough that it had become routine.

He looked up at Edgar and arched a brow.

Edgar met his gaze with the calm expression of a man who had arrived at the same conclusion several seconds ago and had been waiting. "He likely assumed you would not look too closely," he said pleasantly. "

Your father rarely questioned the amounts."
