Sairis's POV
Sairis took a slow breath and pushed the door open.
The outer office moved around him the way it always did, when he walked inside, busy and focused, nobody looking up from their work. It was as if they could sense who had walked in.
He walked down the path between the desks toward Edgar's table and stopped in front of it.
Edgar looked up. His eyes went wide for just a moment before settling into something that was equal parts relief and exasperation. "Look who finally decided to appear," he said. "I was starting to think you had vanished completely."
Sairis forced a smile. It was the best he could manage right now. "And leave you to handle everything on your own," he said. "Not a chance."
Edgar looked at him for a moment. Then something in his expression shifted, the exasperation dropping away and leaving something more genuine underneath it.
