Chapter 18 - Hostile Core

The ground didn't just crack.

It opened.

Arjun stood still, rifle steady, eyes fixed ahead.

The street beneath the retreating Hunter unit split apart—

Not violently.

But slowly.

Deliberately.

"…This isn't like the others," the older man said.

"No," Arjun replied.

"…This is the source."

The Hunters weren't attacking anymore.

They had moved back.

Forming a loose perimeter.

Watching.

Waiting.

"…They're not hunting anymore," the girl whispered.

"…They're guarding," Arjun said.

The system responded.

[Zone Core Entity Detected]

Arjun's eyes narrowed.

"…Core…"

The ground collapsed inward.

A deep cavity formed.

Dark.

Endless.

Then—

Something rose.

Not fast.

Not aggressive.

But heavy.

Massive.

A structure.

At first glance, it didn't even look like a creature.

A towering mass of layered armor.

Segments moving like plates shifting over each other.

Blue energy pulsing through cracks between them.

"…What is that…" the injured man whispered.

Arjun didn't answer.

The drone scanned.

[Entity Classification: Zone Core Guardian]

[Threat Level: Extreme+]

"…So this is how zones defend themselves," Arjun muttered.

The Core Guardian moved.

Not walking.

Not running.

It anchored itself into the ground.

Like it belonged there.

The entire zone reacted.

[Hostile Zone Synchronization Active]

The air grew heavier.

The ground pulsed.

The Hunters shifted again—

Now fully aligned around it.

"…We're not just fighting it," Arjun said.

"…We're fighting the zone itself."

The system didn't deny it.

A new interface appeared.

Zone Objective Updated

Destroy Core Guardian

→ Collapse Zone Control

→ Claim Territory

"…So no shortcuts."

The Core Guardian turned.

Slowly.

Its "head" wasn't a head.

Just a central structure—

A glowing core buried deep within armored layers.

Arjun's eyes sharpened.

"…That's the target."

The drone confirmed.

[Core Depth: 3 layers protected]

"…Of course it is."

The Guardian moved.

A low vibration spread outward.

Then—

The ground erupted.

Spikes.

Massive, jagged structures shot upward from beneath the street.

"MOVE!" Arjun shouted.

The squad scattered.

Barely avoiding being impaled.

"…It controls the terrain," the older man said.

"…And it's not even moving yet," Arjun replied.

The Hunters attacked again.

Not random.

Not chaotic.

Coordinated.

Two rushed the squad.

Three moved toward Arjun.

"…Still playing defense," Arjun muttered.

He moved forward.

Speed Boost activated.

He closed distance instantly.

Fired.

The plasma shot hit the outer armor.

No effect.

"…Too thick."

The system responded.

[Recommendation: Break outer layers first]

"…Yeah, I figured."

A Hunter lunged.

Arjun turned—

Grabbed it mid-motion—

And slammed it into the Guardian's armor.

Impact.

Minimal effect.

"…Not enough force."

The Guardian reacted.

A pulse of energy exploded outward.

Arjun was thrown back.

Crashing across the ground.

[Suit Integrity: 61% → 54%]

"…Damn."

The squad regrouped.

Struggling.

"They're pushing us back!" the girl shouted.

Arjun stood.

Breathing steady.

Thinking fast.

"…We don't break it alone."

He opened the squad interface.

[Command Mode Active]

"…Listen carefully," he said.

"They're not here to kill us."

"They're here to stop us from reaching it."

The older man understood first.

"…So we split them."

Arjun nodded.

"…Exactly."

He marked targets.

"Pull the Hunters away."

"I'll handle the core."

"…You sure about that?" the older man asked.

"…No," Arjun replied.

"…But we don't have another option."

They moved.

The squad scattered again—

But this time—

With purpose.

The Hunters followed.

Pulled away.

Split.

Arjun ran forward.

Alone.

"…Now it's just you and me."

The Core Guardian pulsed.

Sensing him.

The ground shifted again.

More spikes.

More terrain distortion.

But Arjun didn't stop.

He activated Threat Prediction.

Then Speed Boost.

Then—

Overload preparation.

"…Three layers…"

"…Then the core."

He fired.

Repeatedly.

Targeting the same point.

The outer armor cracked—

Slightly.

[Layer 1 Integrity: 92%]

"…That's slow."

The Guardian reacted.

A focused beam of energy shot downward.

Arjun rolled—

Barely escaping.

The ground behind him vanished.

"…So it has precision too."

He stood again.

Closer now.

Much closer.

"…Good."

He adjusted the rifle.

Maximum output.

[Warning: Weapon stability decreasing]

"…Just hold together."

The Guardian pulsed again.

Preparing something bigger.

Arjun's eyes sharpened.

"…I don't give you time."

He stepped forward—

Directly into its range.

Fired.

A massive plasma blast hit the cracked section.

The first layer—

Shattered.

[Layer 1 Destroyed]

The core glow intensified.

The entire zone trembled.

The Guardian responded.

Violently.

Everything—

Escalated.

Arjun smiled slightly.

"…Now we start."

Behind him—

The squad struggled to hold the Hunters.

Ahead—

The Core Guardian awakened fully.

And the real battle—

Had just begun.
