Chapter 31 - Building the Loom

While Akomann was enduring those agonizing days where every day felt like a year...

The first batch of flax and ramie finally reached harvest time, ripened daily under Wu Liang's Earths Grace.

When those long, tough plant fibers were harvested and brought back,

and piled up in the Tribe's open space, everyone gathered around curiously.

"Lord Wu Liang, can these grass-like things really be made into that magical cloth?"

A bold woman asked.

Wu Liang smiled and announced loudly:

"Of course they can."

"Starting today, I am going to build a machine—a machine that can turn this grass into cloth!"

His words filled everyone with anticipation.

Akomann stood on the edge of the crowd, looking at the high-spirited Wu Liang standing on higher ground.

A trace of curiosity finally flickered in her heart.

The next day, Wu Liang began his plan.

The so-called looms were actually the most primitive and basic hand-cranked spinning wheels and foot-pedal looms from the industrial technology tree.

But in the eyes of these tribal women who didn't even know what thread was, once this thing appeared, it would definitely be a divine tool bestowed by the gods.

Wu Liang gathered all the women in the Tribe who had construction experience and had worked on building projects for a long time.

Some were good at woodworking, while others were skilled in blacksmithing.

On a flat wooden board, Wu Liang used charcoal to draw detailed structural diagrams of the spinning wheel and the loom.

The dimensions of every part and the structure of every mortise and tenon were clearly marked.

"Look closely, this is the machine we are going to build."

Wu Liang pointed at the drawings and said to the Artisans.

"Your task is to follow my drawings and make every part exactly, without the slightest error."

The Artisans gathered around the drawings, all of them dumbfounded.

"This... what are these?"

"Heavens, this thing is too complicated!"

"Lord Wu Liang, can this really be built?"

"Yes."

Wu Liang's answer left no room for doubt.

He began to explain in detail the function of each part and how they were assembled together.

His explanation was clear and easy to understand, with rigorous logic, allowing the women, who were initially confused, to gradually understand.

Over the next few days, the entire workshop area of the Tribe entered its busiest state.

Woodworkers were clattering away, sawing wood and chiseling mortises and tenons.

Blacksmiths swung heavy hammers, clanging as they forged various iron connectors and drive shafts.

Everyone was mobilized, and the entire Tribe revolved around this magical machine.

Wu Liang personally oversaw the work, supervising every stage.

His standards were extremely high; if the dimensions of any part were off by even a tiny bit, he would ruthlessly demand it be redone.

Under his strict control, precise parts were manufactured one by one, and then, under his personal guidance, assembly began.

Akomann came to the workshop every day to watch.

She watched as those complex structures, which had originally only existed on the drawings, bit by bit became reality under Wu Liang's command.

She watched that man, sometimes sternly rebuking the Artisans who made mistakes, and sometimes patiently explaining technical points.

His focused look radiated a charm she had never seen before.

It was the charm of creation, a confidence that came from being in control of everything.

He was a completely different person from the cold Wu Liang she had seen on the battlefield.

A ripple uncontrollably stirred in Akomann's heart.

She found that when she looked at Wu Liang again, she actually felt some recognition and admiration for this man.

"It's finished!"

"Lord Wu Liang, we really made it!"

Finally, on the evening of the fifth day.

The Tribe's first foot-pedal loom was assembled under everyone's gaze.

It was a massive wooden machine consisting of countless beams, pedals, shuttles, and heald frames.

It stood there quietly, its structure complex and exquisite, full of the primitive beauty of the industrial age.

Everyone crowded around the machine, touching it, their eyes full of curiosity.

"Lord Wu Liang, how do you use this machine?"

"Yeah, yeah, how do you weave cloth?"

"I'm so excited!"

Facing everyone's calls, Wu Liang immediately took action.

He had someone bring over the thread spun from the pre-processed flax fibers.

Under everyone's gaze, he personally operated the machine.

With the support of system knowledge, Wu Liang skillfully threaded countless warp threads, one by one, through the heald frames and the reed, then fixed them onto the cloth beam.

This process was extremely tedious and required great patience and care.

Wu Liang worked meticulously, his fingers nimbly darting between the threads as if he were weaving a piece of art.

This skill alone left all the women present dazzled.

Finally, the preparations were complete.

Wu Liang sat in front of the loom and took a deep breath.

He stepped on the pedal, the heald frames crossed up and down, and the warp threads instantly split into two layers, forming a shed.

With his right hand, he sent the shuttle containing the weft thread through the shed with a clack.

Then he stepped down with his other foot, switching the heald frames, while simultaneously pulling the reed.

With a thud, he tightened the weft thread that had just passed through.

"Clack!"

"Thud!"

"Clack!"

"Thud!"

The rhythmic mechanical sounds echoed in the workshop.

Everyone's eyes widened, staring intently at Wu Liang's hands and the machine.

They saw that with each pass of the shuttle and each beat of the reed,

at the end of those dense warp threads, a flat, off-white material was bit by bit growing out!

One inch, two inches, one foot... "Heavens... oh my god!"

"Cloth! Is this cloth?!"

"Chief, High Priest, the machine we built really wove cloth!"

Thundering exclamations erupted from the crowd.

Akomann stood in the crowd, her lips moving slightly.

"Is this cloth?"

She looked at the cloth being woven, her gaze finally landing on the man sitting in front of the loom with a focused expression.

Wu Liang did not stop; he wove for nearly an hour.

Until a large bolt of linen, about two feet wide and several yards long, was completely woven.

He cut the warp threads, took the bolt of cloth off the loom, and held it high.

Although the texture of this cloth was somewhat coarse, it was countless times better than animal skins.

"From today on, our Black Rock Tribe will use this kind of fabric to make new clothes!"

"Clothes that are thousands of times better than the animal skins we wear now!"

Wu Liang's voice rang throughout the workshop.

"Ohhhhh—!"

All the women raised their arms and let out a thunderous cheer.

Wu Liang handed the bolt of cloth to Eliza.

"Eliza, next I will build a few more looms and spinning wheels."

"You are responsible for organizing personnel and setting up a weaving training class."

"I want every woman in the Tribe to learn how to spin and weave in the shortest possible time."

"No problem."

Eliza excitedly took the bolt of cloth, stroking the fabric as if she couldn't put it down.

Wu Liang's gaze fell on the corner, and he walked up to Akomann.

"Your people will soon be wearing clothes made from this."

"They will forget the coarseness and stench of animal skins; they will fall in love with this softness and comfort."

Akomann gripped the piece of cloth, her knuckles turning white.

She looked up into Wu Liang's deep eyes, opened her mouth, but couldn't say a single word.
