Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 – A Path That Was Never Meant to Be

The training grounds did not quiet down.

If anything, they grew harsher with each passing day.

Not in sound—there were no shouts, no chaos—

but in the way every movement carried urgency.

Nine days remained.

And everyone knew it.

Lin Xu sat where he always did.

Same position. Same posture.

Nothing outward had changed.

He closed his eyes.

His breathing slowed naturally, settling into the rhythm he had grown used to.

Qi gathered.

Thin strands at first—

then gradually thicker, steadier.

Second Layer.

Stable.

He guided it forward.

Carefully.

Not forcing. Not rushing.

Toward the same boundary.

The resistance met him again.

It did not push back violently.

It did not reject him.

It simply… existed.

Unmoving.

Unchanging.

Lin Xu stayed there longer this time.

His control did not waver.

His breathing remained even.

He adjusted the flow slightly—

redirecting the Qi along a narrower path, refining it as it approached the barrier.

Nothing changed.

Not even the smallest shift.

Time passed.

The pressure he applied was steady, measured—never excessive.

But the result remained the same.

Blocked.

Lin Xu slowly let the Qi settle.

He did not force one last attempt.

He did not test it recklessly.

Instead, he opened his eyes.

Around him, others continued training.

One disciple nearby exhaled sharply, frustration clear even without words.

Another pushed forward too forcefully—the Qi around him flickered before collapsing, forcing him to stop abruptly.

A third sat unmoving, eyes closed, as if unwilling to even try again.

Lin Xu watched them briefly.

Then looked away.

At first glance, their struggles were no different from his.

Everyone was facing the same wall.

But as he sat there…

something felt off.

Not in what he saw—

but in what he felt.

A subtle sense of distance.

As if the path before them…

and the one before him…

were not entirely the same.

Lin Xu stood.

Instead of returning to the cave immediately, he began to walk.

Past the training grounds.

Past the mission hall.

Further than he usually went.

The noise of the sect gradually faded behind him.

The paths grew quieter.

Less traveled.

Eventually, the terrain opened slightly—

and from there, the descending paths of the mountain could be seen.

They stretched downward, winding through rock and shadow, disappearing into the lower settlements below.

Lin Xu's gaze lingered there.

He had seen them before.

Only briefly.

Figures moving slowly along those paths.

Carrying tools.

Hauling stone.

Cultivators—

but not quite.

Those who had failed to advance.

Those who remained…

but no longer belonged.

Still tied to the sect—

yet far removed from it.

Lin Xu stood there longer than he intended.

Then, quietly, he turned back.

That night, the cave felt colder than usual.

Still.

Silent.

The Ledger lay where it always had.

Lin Xu sat before it.

He did not open it immediately.

Instead, he remained still for a moment—

as if aligning his thoughts before facing it.

Then he opened it.

The page was blank.

For a breath.

Then—

a faint mark appeared.

Thinner than a line.

Unclear.

But present.

Lin Xu's gaze fixed on it.

It did not move.

Did not form words.

It simply remained.

And in that stillness—

a realization surfaced.

Not sudden.

Not forced.

But undeniable.

He was not failing because he lacked effort.

He was not falling short because his control was insufficient.

From nothing—

he had stepped into the First Layer.

From the First—

into the Second.

For someone with no fate—

that alone should not have been possible.

Yet here he was.

So why did it stop here?

Lin Xu's gaze lowered slightly.

The answer came without resistance.

Because this…

was already beyond what was meant for him.

The Second Layer—

was not his path.

It was a deviation.

The Third Layer—

was never part of it.

If he continued like this—

trained as he had been—

waited as others did—

Nothing would change.

The outcome had already been decided.

He would fail the trial.

And after that—

He would be sent down.

Back to those winding paths.

Back to a life that had once already been written for him.

Lin Xu's fingers tightened slightly.

So this was the truth.

The change he made before—

had been small.

Enough to step onto the path.

But not enough…

to walk it.

The mark on the page flickered faintly.

As if in response.

Lin Xu watched it in silence.

If he wanted to move forward—

truly forward—

Then this time…

a small change would not be enough.

His hand moved.

The brush lifted.

And hovered above the page.

This time, he did not hesitate out of uncertainty.

Because now—

he understood.

Remain here—

and accept what was already decided.

Or change it again.

Not slightly.

But enough…

to cross what was never meant to be crossed.

The mark trembled beneath the brush.

Faint.

Yet unmistakable.

As if something far beyond this cave had stirred—

just slightly.

Lin Xu stilled his hand.

He did not write.

Not yet.

But this time—

it was no longer hesitation.

Only timing.
