Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Hero Bleeds

The hallway fell silent.

Not the kind of silence after chaos.

The kind before something worse.

The top-ranked student stepped forward.

Each step was calm.

Measured.

Like he already knew the outcome.

Students instinctively moved aside.

No one wanted to be near what was about to happen.

Kai didn't move.

He just watched.

Analyzed.

Measured.

"Name?" Kai asked casually.

The student stopped a few meters away.

"…Leon Ardent."

His voice carried quiet authority.

Of course it did.

Top rank.

Hero material.

The kind of person the system probably hated.

Kai smiled.

"Cool name."

Leon didn't react.

His eyes shifted briefly to the crushed troll behind Kai.

Then back to him.

"You're not supposed to be capable of this."

Blunt.

Accurate.

Annoying.

Kai shrugged.

"People change."

Leon's grip on his sword tightened.

"No," he said calmly.

"They don't change this fast."

Pressure

Mana exploded.

Not violently like the troll.

Controlled.

Sharp.

Precise.

It pressed against Kai like invisible weight.

His instincts screamed.

Danger.

Kai's smile didn't disappear.

But his eyes sharpened.

"Yeah…" he muttered. "This one's different."

Leon raised his sword.

"I'll ask once more," he said.

"What are you?"

Kai tilted his head.

"Hungry."

Leon moved.

The Gap

Fast.

Too fast.

Kai barely saw it.

CLANG.

Steel met stone as Kai threw himself sideways.

Leon's blade carved through the ground where Kai stood a second ago.

Clean.

Effortless.

Like cutting paper.

"Damn," Kai muttered, sliding back.

"That would've hurt."

Leon didn't chase immediately.

That was the problem.

He wasn't reckless.

He was reading.

Learning.

Adapting.

Kai's thoughts raced.

Strength gap: huge.

Speed gap: worse.

Skill gap… yeah, not even close.

So direct fighting?

Suicide.

Kai grinned.

"Good thing I don't fight fair."

System Response

The blue screen flickered.

[Villain Growth System]

Opponent Threat Level: High

Recommended Behavior: Deception / Exploitation

Bonus Reward Condition: Break opponent's composure

Kai's grin widened.

"Oh, I'm definitely doing that."

Round Two

Leon stepped forward again.

This time—

He didn't stop.

Kai activated Dirty Escape.

His body blurred sideways—

But Leon adjusted instantly.

CLANG.

The blade grazed Kai's shoulder.

Blood splattered.

Students gasped.

Kai staggered back, clutching his shoulder.

"Okay…" he hissed. "Noted."

Leon's eyes narrowed.

"You're inexperienced."

Kai laughed.

"Obviously."

Then he ran.

Coward?

Straight down the hallway.

Away from Leon.

Students stared in disbelief.

"He's running?!"

"Of course he is!"

"He was never a fighter—!"

Leon didn't hesitate.

He chased.

The Trap

Kai's breathing stayed steady.

His mind was calm.

Every step was planned.

Every movement calculated.

He wasn't escaping.

He was leading.

He reached a narrow corridor.

Broken.

Unstable.

Perfect.

Kai slowed down deliberately.

Leon closed the distance instantly.

"Running confirms it," Leon said coldly.

"You're nothing but a fraud."

Kai stopped.

Turned.

Smiled.

"Yeah?"

Snap

Leon lunged.

Kai didn't dodge.

Instead—

He slammed his foot into the cracked wall beside him.

Hard.

CRACK.

The already unstable structure gave in.

The entire corridor trembled.

Leon's eyes flickered—

Just for a second.

That was enough.

Kai activated Dirty Escape.

He vanished—

Reappearing behind Leon.

Then—

He kicked.

Not at Leon.

At the support column.

BOOOOM.

The ceiling collapsed.

Again.

But this time—

In a confined space.

Leon reacted instantly.

His sword flashed.

Debris shattered mid-air.

Precision.

Control.

Power.

But not everything.

A massive chunk of stone slammed into his side.

CRASH.

Leon was forced to one knee.

Silence.

The First Crack

Kai stood a few steps away.

Breathing lightly.

Watching.

Waiting.

Leon slowly stood up.

Dust covered his uniform.

A thin line of blood ran down his cheek.

The students watching from afar froze.

"…He's bleeding."

"The top rank… is bleeding?"

"No way…"

Kai smiled.

Wide.

Satisfied.

"There it is," he said softly.

Leon wiped the blood away.

His expression didn't change.

But something else did.

The air around him sharpened.

Colder.

More dangerous.

"You planned this," Leon said.

Not a question.

A realization.

Kai shrugged.

"Took you long enough."

Shift

The pressure increased.

This time—

It wasn't controlled.

It was personal.

Leon stepped forward.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

"You're not strong," he said.

"But you're dangerous."

Kai laughed.

"Finally. Some respect."

System Notification

[Condition Met]

Opponent Composure: Broken

Reward: +4 Stat Points

Kai's eyes lit up.

"Oh, that's big."

Leon moved again.

Faster than before.

Angrier.

Kai didn't run this time.

He stepped forward.

Collision

CLANG.

Their movements collided.

Kai barely blocked with a piece of debris.

The impact sent shockwaves through his arms.

Pain shot through his body.

But he didn't back down.

"Here's the thing," Kai said, grinning through the pain.

"You're strong."

Leon's blade pressed harder.

"But you fight like you've never been desperate."

Kai's eyes darkened.

"And I've got nothing to lose."

Cliffhanger

Leon's expression shifted slightly.

Not fear.

Not yet.

But something close.

The system flickered violently.

[Emergency Evolution Option Unlocked]

Cost: Unknown

Risk: High

Activate?

Kai stared at it.

For a split second.

Then smiled.

"Now this…"

he whispered,

"…looks fun."
