Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: The Twelfth Fragment

Ren floated in infinity.

There was no up or down. No before or after. No Ren or not-Ren. Just light and memory and the feeling of being everywhere at once.

You're here.

His father's voice. But different now. Not a recording. Not a fragment. Real. Present. Alive.

"Dad?"

I'm here, son. All of me. The parts you've collected and the parts you haven't. Everything I was. Everything I am.

Ren tried to see. Tried to find his father in the light. Slowly, a figure formed. Kael Vortanis. Not as he'd been in the memories. Not as the warrior or the legend. Just a man. Smiling.

"Am I dead?"

"No." Kael laughed softly. "You're more alive than you've ever been. The twelfth fragment is merging with you. With the others. Making you whole."

"I feel... strange."

"That's normal. You're carrying eleven other pieces of me. Adding the twelfth changes everything." He walked closer. In this place, there was no distance. He was simply closer. "How do you feel?"

Ren considered the question. Eleven fragments pulsed inside him. Courage. Endurance. Wisdom. Love. Regret. Power. Strategy. Hope. Sacrifice. Truth. And the tenth. The one he'd never named.

"I feel like I'm becoming someone else."

"No." Kael shook his head. "You're becoming yourself. The person you were always meant to be. The fragments aren't changing you. They're revealing you."

Ren didn't understand. But in this place, understanding felt different. Slower. Deeper.

"I have questions," he said.

"Of course you do."

"The prophecy. Is it real?"

Kael was quiet for a moment. Then: "Yes and no. Prophecies are tricky. They're not predictions. They're possibilities. The universe saw a chance. A hope. And it gave that hope a name."

"My name."

"Your name. But you still have to choose. Every moment. Every battle. Every sacrifice. The prophecy doesn't force you to do anything. It just gives you the opportunity."

Ren thought about that. About all the choices that had brought him here.

"The Twelve. Can I really defeat them?"

"With my power? Maybe. With your heart? Definitely." Kael smiled. "You're stronger than I ever was, Ren. Not in power. In the ways that matter. You love more openly. You trust more freely. You hope more boldly. Those are the things that will defeat the Twelve. Not my power. You."

Ren felt tears on his cheeks. In this place without body, without form, he still cried.

"I missed you," he whispered. "All my life, I missed you."

Kael's arms wrapped around him. Solid. Real. A father's embrace.

"I missed you too, my son. Every moment. Every battle. Every star I passed, I thought of you. Wondered what you were doing. Whether you were happy. Whether you'd ever forgive me for leaving."

"There's nothing to forgive."

"Maybe not. But thank you for saying it." Kael pulled back, looking at him. "I have to go now. Really go. The fragments are merging. When they're done, I won't be separate anymore. I'll just be part of you."

"No." Ren grabbed him. "No, you can't leave again."

"I'm not leaving. I'll always be with you. In every choice. In every battle. In every moment of love or hope or sacrifice." He smiled. "I'll be the voice in your heart that tells you you're enough. That you've always been enough."

"Dad—"

"Live, Ren. Live well. Love deeply. Fight for what matters. And when you face the Twelve, remember who you are." He faded slowly, becoming light. "You're my son. And I'm so proud of you."

The light swallowed everything.

Ren opened his eyes.

He was lying on the floor of the throne room. Cold marble beneath him. Twelve empty thrones around him. The pedestal where the fragment had been was dark.

And inside him, something new.

Twelve fragments. Twelve aspects. Not separate anymore. Unified. Complete. He could feel his father's presence everywhere. Not as a separate voice. As part of his own thoughts. His own heart. His own soul.

He stood slowly. His body felt different. Lighter. Stronger. More alive.

The throne room doors burst open.

Guards flooded in. Dozens of them. Weapons raised. Behind them, figures in dark robes. The Lords' servants. Their eyes burned with hatred.

"There! The intruder! Kill him!"

Ren raised his hand.

The guards stopped. Not because he'd done anything. Because they couldn't move. His power held them frozen, effortless.

"Where are the Twelve?" he asked.

No one answered. He could feel them, though. Distant. Returning. Veyna's distraction had bought him time, but not much.

He walked through the frozen guards, past the servants, out of the throne room. The palace corridors stretched before him. More guards. More servants. All frozen by his passing.

He reached the courtyard. The shuttle waited. Sara and Aiko were inside, their faces pale with fear.

"Go," he said quietly. "Now."

The shuttle lifted off. Behind them, alarms blared. Ships scrambled. Defenses activated.

But Ren's power wrapped around them, invisible, protective. No weapon could touch them. No ship could catch them.

They reached the moon. Reached the Starfire. Lifted off.

Behind them, Imperium burned with alarm. The Twelve were returning. They'd know soon. They'd come for him.

But Ren wasn't running anymore.

Twelve fragments. Twelve aspects. His father's soul, united with his own.

He was ready.
