Chapter 36 - Chapter 36 – The Eyes Beyond the Door

Chapter 36 – The Eyes Beyond the Door

The moment the Warden spoke—

the shattered door inside Evetyl Clarke's mind moved.

Not opened.

Moved.

As if something behind it had shifted its weight.

Watching.

Listening.

Waiting.

Then—

two eyes opened in the darkness beyond the cracks.

---

Evetyl screamed.

Not because the eyes were monstrous.

Not because they were enormous.

Because they looked familiar.

Too familiar.

---

They looked exactly like hers.

---

The white corridor shook violently.

The reflection immediately stepped backward.

For the first time since Evetyl had met it, fear appeared on its face.

Real fear.

Not calculation.

Not concern.

Fear.

---

"No."

The reflection's voice trembled.

"No, no, no..."

---

The eyes beyond the door blinked once.

The entire corridor cracked.

---

Outside, Black Hollow reacted instantly.

Every window shattered.

Every remaining bell rang.

The fog exploded outward from the village in a massive wave.

Even the sky seemed to bend away.

---

The Warden looked upward.

Its ancient expression hardened.

---

"Too soon."

---

Arden immediately noticed.

"What does that mean?"

---

The Warden did not answer.

Because something else answered first.

---

A voice.

---

Not from the church.

Not from the village.

Not from reality.

---

From beyond the Door.

---

"Too soon?"

---

The words echoed everywhere at once.

Inside thoughts.

Inside memories.

Inside existence itself.

---

The voice laughed softly.

---

"I have waited long enough."

---

Silence followed.

Terrible silence.

---

Even the Decision Engine stopped calculating.

Its symbols froze in place.

As if the system itself was listening.

---

The silhouette beyond reality went completely still.

Not moving.

Not speaking.

Not reacting.

---

Watching.

---

Cr-Hook remained frozen.

Its fractured hook hanging motionless.

For the first time since its arrival, the demon seemed irrelevant.

Like a minor problem in the presence of something far worse.

---

Inside the corridor, the eyes behind the Door focused on Evetyl.

Directly on her.

---

And she suddenly understood something horrifying.

---

The thing behind the Door could see through her.

Not her body.

Not her mind.

Her existence.

---

Every memory.

Every timeline.

Every possibility.

Every version.

---

All of it visible.

---

The reflection slowly moved in front of Evetyl.

Protectively.

---

The action surprised her.

---

"What are you doing?"

---

The reflection didn't look away from the Door.

---

"Buying time."

---

The answer sent chills through her.

---

Buying time?

From what?

---

The eyes blinked again.

---

The Door cracked further.

---

A single hand emerged.

---

Human.

Almost.

---

Pale fingers wrapped around the edge of the broken Door.

Then tightened.

---

Reality screamed.

---

Not metaphorically.

Not poetically.

Literally.

---

The village itself cried out.

Buildings groaned.

The fog twisted violently.

The overlapping realities began collapsing into one another.

---

The Warden took a step forward.

For the first time, genuine power radiated from it.

Ancient symbols appeared around its body.

Chains of black light emerged from empty space.

Countless seals activated simultaneously.

---

The Warden's voice thundered across existence.

---

"YOU WILL NOT CROSS."

---

The hand stopped moving.

---

For a moment—

everything became still.

---

Then the voice behind the Door laughed.

---

A deeper laugh this time.

Amused.

Patient.

Dangerous.

---

"You still believe this is a prison."

---

The Warden's expression darkened.

---

Because it didn't deny the statement.

---

The voice continued.

---

"It was never built to keep me inside."

---

Silence.

---

Every force present froze.

---

The Decision Engine.

The silhouette.

Cr-Hook.

Arden.

Clara.

Even the Warden.

---

Nobody spoke.

---

Because everyone understood the implication.

---

If the Door wasn't built to keep the thing inside...

---

Then what was it built for?

---

The answer came immediately.

---

The voice behind the Door whispered it.

---

"It was built to keep something out."

---

The village went silent.

Completely silent.

---

Even the fog stopped moving.

---

The hand slowly tightened around the broken Door.

---

And far beyond Black Hollow—

far beyond reality—

something answered.

---

Not the silhouette.

Not the Decision Engine.

Something farther away.

Something larger.

---

Something that had just heard the Door opening.

---

The Warden's eyes widened.

For the first time in ages.

---

And it whispered a single name.

---

"The Outer King."

---

Then the sky split open.
