Kai woke to the sound of quiet footsteps and the faint smell of antiseptic. His head throbbed, every muscle aching like he had run a hundred miles in seconds. Sunlight streamed faintly through the curtains, but it felt almost too bright.
He blinked slowly and realized he wasn't on the rooftop. He was in a bed—soft, warm, safe. Axel was lying nearby, still unconscious but breathing steadily. Leo sat in the chair beside the bed, his expression a mixture of worry and relief.
"Kai… you're awake," Leo said softly, standing. "Don't move too fast. You've pushed yourself way too far."
Kai tried to sit up, but his body screamed in protest. Pain shot down his arms and legs, and a wave of nausea washed over him. He groaned, sinking back into the pillows.
"I… I thought…" he whispered hoarsely. "I thought we could keep going… fight them…"
Leo shook his head, placing a firm hand on Kai's shoulder. "You're human, Kai. Powers or not, your body has limits. You nearly killed yourself carrying Axel out there. That Dragon member… she's stronger than we thought. And those drugs—they can shut you down completely. You can't ignore that."
Kai's hands trembled slightly as he stared at the ceiling. "But… Axel… what if he…?"
Leo placed a finger to his lips. "He's alive. That's all that matters right now. We'll heal him, we'll get stronger… but we have to be smart. If you go back out there now, you'll both die. And trust me, you won't get a second chance."
Kai exhaled slowly, feeling the weight of the fight settle over him. For the first time, he realized just how close they had come to losing everything. The adrenaline that had kept him going was gone, leaving only exhaustion—and a flicker of guilt that he couldn't push away.
"Leo… we need a plan," Kai said finally, his voice steadier but still weak. "We can't let her get away with this. The Dragon… those drugs… she'll hurt more people if we don't stop her."
Leo nodded, his expression serious. "We will. But first, we heal. Then we train. We find out how those drugs work, and we make sure we're ready next time. Running in blindly got us hurt—and we can't afford that again."
Kai closed his eyes briefly, trying to steady his breathing. "I… I thought I could do it all myself."
"You're not alone, Kai," Leo said firmly. "Never again. You have Axel, you have me, and we'll figure this out together. But right now… rest. You need it."
For the first time in hours, Kai let himself relax. The pain was still there, dull and persistent, but for once he wasn't running or fighting. He was safe—at least for now.
Outside, the city was quiet, unaware of the battles fought in its shadows. But Kai knew this was only the beginning. The Dragon member had shown her hand, and their lives had changed forever.
And when the time came, they wouldn't just fight to survive—they would fight to win.
Kai clenched his fists weakly, a spark of determination returning. His powers might be fragile now, but his will was not.
This wasn't the end. Not by a long shot.
