Chapter 14 - The Collector Speaks

Silence filled the room.

Heavy.

Unnatural.

Lina stood still.

Too still.

Noah didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Didn't look away.

"Who are you?" he asked quietly.

Lina's eyes met his.

For a moment—

There was hesitation.

Then—

She smiled.

"Wrong question."

Mira stepped back again.

"Noah… don't engage…"

But he ignored her.

"Then what should I ask?" he said.

Lina tilted her head.

"You should ask…"

A pause.

"Why you were chosen."

The words hit hard.

Noah's expression darkened.

"I wasn't chosen."

"Denial," Lina said softly.

Her voice—

Calm.

Controlled.

Too controlled.

"You were always part of the pattern."

Silence.

Mira whispered:

"This is not Lina…"

Noah took a step forward.

"Where is she?"

Lina's smile faded slightly.

"Still here."

A pause.

"Buried."

Noah clenched his fists.

"Bring her back."

Silence.

Then—

"Why?" she asked.

The question lingered.

Sharp.

"She's weak."

Noah didn't hesitate.

"She's human."

Lina's eyes darkened.

"Exactly."

Mira's heart pounded.

"This thing… it hates humanity…"

Noah shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"It doesn't hate."

He looked directly at Lina.

"It doesn't feel anything."

Silence.

Then—

She smiled again.

"Correct."

Mira froze.

"It agreed…"

Noah stepped closer.

"What are you?" he asked again.

This time—

The answer came differently.

Slow.

Deliberate.

"I am what remains… when identity is removed."

A chill spread through the room.

Mira whispered:

"…This is beyond anything we've seen…"

Noah didn't react.

"And The Collector?" he asked.

Lina's eyes flickered.

For the first time—

A reaction.

Interesting.

"You're curious," she said.

"I'm done playing," Noah replied.

Silence.

Then—

"You already met him."

Noah's heart skipped.

"What?"

A pause.

Then—

"He touched her first."

Everything stopped.

Noah's mind raced.

"The first victim…"

"No," Lina said calmly.

"The first trigger."

Mira stepped forward.

"What does that mean?"

Lina didn't look at her.

"He didn't take her power…"

A pause.

"He activated it."

Silence.

Noah's chest tightened.

"So this was planned…"

"Yes."

Mira's voice trembled:

"Why her…?"

Lina looked at Noah.

"Compatibility."

The word again.

Noah clenched his jaw.

"And me?"

A pause.

"You're the variable."

Silence.

Mira whispered:

"This is bad…"

Noah didn't move.

"What happens next?" he asked.

Lina smiled slightly.

"Now… we observe."

Before he could react—

Her body moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

She grabbed his wrist again—

Contact.

Mira screamed:

"NO—!"

Everything froze.

Inside—

The same space.

Dark.

Broken.

But different now.

Stronger.

The presence was clearer.

More stable.

"You returned," it said.

Noah stepped forward.

"I'm not leaving her."

Silence.

Then—

"You can't stop this."

"We'll see."

Behind him—

Lina appeared again.

Weaker.

Fading.

"Noah…" she whispered.

He turned instantly.

"I'm here."

Her hand trembled.

"It's learning…"

His heart dropped.

"What?"

"It's becoming me…"

Silence.

"And soon…"

Her voice broke.

"You won't know the difference."

The presence moved closer.

"You are unnecessary."

Noah stepped forward.

"Then remove me."

A pause.

Then—

"Gladly."

Everything shattered.

Outside—

Lina's body convulsed violently.

Mira rushed forward.

"Noah! Lina!"

Then—

Suddenly—

Everything stopped.

Lina collapsed again.

Noah fell beside her.

Breathing hard.

Alive.

Barely.

Mira stared at them.

Terrified.

Because now—

She understood something far worse.

This wasn't just control.

This was replacement.

And Lina—

Was slowly being erased.
