The camp after the Lightning Thief summer had a different quality than the camp before it. Not visibly — the strawberry fields were the same, the Long Island Sound unchanged, the cabins their familiar shapes against the evening sky. But something had shifted in the divine atmosphere, the way a room shifts after a significant argument has been resolved: the pressure released, the air not restored to what it was before but rearranged into a new configuration.
The three elder gods had almost gone to war. Kronos had moved pieces on the board. Percy Jackson existed as a named, claimed, acknowledged demigod son of Poseidon and he was twelve years old and the world now knew him.
Kael sat on the hill at Thalia's Pine — the tree fully recovered now, vibrant, the divine energy in it the steady warmth of something healed rather than sustained — and thought about what had changed and what had not.
Luke was still out there. The Titan's army was still building. Nico and Bianca di Angelo were still in the Lotus Hotel, though they wouldn't be for much longer — the cannon of the Titan's Curse was approaching and the di Angelo timeline was moving even if Percy had not yet intersected with it. The Westover Hall sequence was approximately ten months away.
He pulled out his notebook and reviewed the Bianca file. He had been updating it all summer, sharpening the edges of his approach as his Crossroads Sight developed and his read on the variables improved. The core problem had not changed: he needed to be at Westover Hall with a reason that was not suspicious, and he needed Bianca to have the information before the junkyard, delivered by someone she trusted or at minimum by someone who had earned enough credibility in that moment to be listened to.
The credibility problem was the hard one. He was going to be a stranger to her. There was no version of this where he had an existing relationship with Bianca di Angelo — she had been in the Lotus Hotel for most of his time at camp, and the brief window when she was in the real world before Westover Hall was not one he had access to. He was going to arrive at the school as someone she had never met and he was going to need to make her listen to a very specific piece of information at a very specific moment.
He had one asset: the Crossroads Sight, now at Rank B, could show him the critical branch points of any situation he was standing in. He could use it at Westover Hall to identify the precise moment when giving Bianca the information would have the highest probability of being received and retained.
He had a second asset that he had not fully accounted for until this summer: his title. Keeper of Oaths. Divine beings and particularly divine-touched beings — demigods — responded to him differently than they responded to others. They sensed the reliability in it. A stranger telling Bianca something critical would ordinarily be dismissed; a stranger who carried the weight of the Keeper of Oaths title might not be.
He filed an updated version of the approach plan. Then he closed the notebook and looked at the camp below in the summer evening and thought about Percy Jackson, who had done the thing that needed doing this summer with the specific, blunt, barely-adequate courage of someone who was still becoming who they were going to be, and had done it regardless.
He thought: I needed to see that. Not from the books, which I had. From standing twenty feet away and watching it. Percy Jackson is real and young and frightened and he does it anyway. That is worth knowing in your body rather than your head.
