Written by Jack Galeson, circa year 700 AF (After Fall)
"I am writing this first page of this diary with the hope that it will be my one and only."
"I may not wake up in this world tomorrow morning. To whoever is able to read this page — you, who are undoubtedly like me — I wish the best of luck."
"My current mental state is all over the place, so I am writing down everything I can remember as soon as the thought comes up. If you find it hard to follow, I apologize."
"My name — no.. the name of the previous owner of this body is Jack. But my real name is.."
There were multiple uneven marks to the right of this line of text, as if the one writing it stopped to think.
"I do not remember my name. It also appears that many of my memories from Earth can no longer be recalled."
"Not that there was much to them. I know that I used to live paycheck to paycheck and that I moved around a lot."
"Though it seems there has been some improvement to my life. In an ironic twist of fate, I am now the proud owner of a home."
"A little brick one-room house, inherited from the previous Jack."
"So I can say I traveled to the new world to settle it. I don't know much about the opportunities here, but I have some ideas."
"I could find the place Jack used to work. This was one of the reasons I explored today, but finding it in a port town this large seems impossible with my current skills."
"Second option is to find a new job. One is the clerk application for a clay deposit that even someone like me, with only an eighth-grade education, may be able to compete for, because one of the main requirements was math."
"And I'm not saying it's going to be easy, but from my point of view this place is still medieval and backwards enough to still use feudalism."
"I don't think you'd need anything past algebra for such a task anyway."
"There is also magic. I saw a woman post her magical skills on the notice board. There were things like healing, summoning, warped spaces and some other things I can't remember."
"I should also check the literacy rate in this world. If it's the same as in medieval times then I can really push my translation ability as an advantage."
"Speaking of the translation ability, it appears that I am able to read and speak the local language, though I don't know if it extends to other languages."
"Next, the people I met. There was only one person who knew Jack from before — an old lady named Delma who works as a baker."
"The information I got from her was priceless. For example, how much a silver coin is worth, that there is a disease going around, and that I live near the slums."
"I also learned that there is one person looking for me called Aldric, who goes to a church near the bakery. If need be I will look for him there."
"There is also a blockade stopping trade into town, causing prices of non-local goods to rise. For example, an old apple costs about six flora, which I think is the equivalent of a normal bread."
"The merchants and ship captains apparently chose a representative to meet with the Count in hopes of lifting the blockade."
"There are two churches in the area. One called the Church of the Sea Dragon, or Mardrago, and the other called the Church of Salvation. When I tried to translate what Salvation meant, the same way I did with Sea Dragon, I got a terrible headache."
"It appears that the Church of Mardrago is the dominant one, and that the Church of Salvation is actively attempting to treat the current disease from the slums and nearby areas. Not that it affects me — not because I don't care, but because the street where my house is was already wiped out by it. The old Jack included."
"About the town: there is Faithful Street, where I live, named in honor of the dead after it was wiped out. There is the Clock Tower Market where non-settled merchants trade their goods. There is Worker Street, where I went to buy this paper, ink and quills — as well as candy sticks."
"The candy sticks were two flora each!"
"But the apothecary lady was strange. Her shop was very clean, the building quality was far above the neighboring ones, and the furnishings inside were similar."
"The moment I went close to her I felt a strange pressure, and my instinct told me not to look or I would die. I have no idea why it felt like that, but I will listen to my instincts and avoid her as much as possible."
"And I will not even begin to explain the ingredients I saw behind the counter."
"One more thing before I finish this entry."
"I had a dream when I went to sleep. I don't know if it was a nightmare or not, but in it I was a black foggy entity being hunted by a similar entity that was a giant spider, in a strange gray wasteland."
"I don't remember much about it. It felt hazy and distant."
"But this might be the reason I lost some memories."
