Chapter 11 - 11. A Confident Double Bell Light

PS : Double Bell Light is Futaba Hikari. Translations vary because the original manga didn't give her an English name early on. I chose this version because it matches her B-shaped hair ornaments. Added a note in Chapter 7 as well.

"Ah, ahaha..." Double Bell Light offered an awkward laugh. Even though the current situation was undeniably cringe-worthy, she decided to act as if nothing had happened.

After all, Oguri Cap seemed like a simple, pure-hearted girl without a single mean bone in her body.

Dust settled slowly, landing on Oguri Cap's stiff, frozen shoulders, but it was quickly followed by the weight of Fujimaru Ritsuka's reliable hand and his calm voice. "It's okay, Oguri. It's just a door. As long as it can be fixed—and as long as you learn something from this—it's not a problem."

Oguri Cap's expression instantly shifted from gloom to sunshine: OxO → OvO

However, beneath that gentle smile, Fujimaru Ritsuka added: "But if you can't summarize what you've learned, this carrot cake is going to someone else."

The girl's brilliant smile froze on her face, her expression twisting into something so pitiful it could break a person's heart.

Oguri Cap: ┭┮﹏┭┮

Determined to protect her carrot cake from any "accidents," the silver-gray-haired girl began to churn her gears, her facial expressions becoming even richer and more adorable as she thought.

The kind-hearted Double Bell Light didn't think twice and decisively joined the "post-incident review."

After a bit of mental hammering and clanking, Oguri Cap successfully passed Fujimaru Ritsuka's test. In her excitement, she gave Double Bell Light a hug that nearly snapped her waist in half—an unintentional "achievement" of repaying kindness with a crushing blow.

While rubbing her sore back, Double Bell Light muttered to herself: No wonder Trainer-san specifically warned me to avoid getting Oguri too excited in our daily interactions. With this kind of strength... Trainer-san must have suffered quite a lot in the past.

An image flashed through the girl's mind: Fujimaru Ritsuka nearly being hugged to death, followed by a tearful, clueless Oguri kneeling by his side, begging him not to die.

Though it was a bit rude to think so, Double Bell Light's first reaction was: Sigh, what a pair of ill-fated lovers.

Just then, Oguri Cap brought over a plate of carrot cake to share. Before the girl could even think of declining, Oguri had already dashed back to the table to begin another round of feasting. She hadn't even bothered to ask how the two of them knew each other or how Double Bell Light had joined the team.

Watching the adorable glutton, Double Bell Light took the initiative to ask, "Trainer-san, how did you and Oguri meet? And..."

And how did you think of teaching Oguri to fix a door by hand? Normally, a Trainer wouldn't need to master such a skill. Couldn't such chores be left to the school janitor?

However, Double Bell Light deeply respected Fujimaru Ritsuka's educational philosophy. Compared to verbal lecturing, leading by example and letting the person experience things firsthand left a much deeper impression, leading to far better educational results.

As they spoke, Oguri Cap's ears were perked high. She took the entire conversation to heart. Once their talk hit a natural lull, she finally spoke up: "How did Trainer-san and Light 'get together'?"

"G-get together?!" Hearing such an ambiguous phrasing, Double Bell Light's face turned bright red. She waved her hands frantically in protest. "No, no! It's not like that at all!"

Why did we suddenly jump to this topic? Isn't the pace a bit too fast? And "get together"? I just joined the team!

"Oguri means 'joining the team.' You just have to take her words literally," Fujimaru Ritsuka explained, holding up his right index finger. He then reminded her: "It might take some getting used to at first, but don't worry. We have a long time to work together. You'll get the hang of it."

He then proceeded to tell Oguri the story of how he and Double Bell Light met.

While returning from buying groceries, Fujimaru Ritsuka had run into Double Bell Light near the cafeteria. The kind girl had proactively helped him carry his bags, and they struck up a conversation. Through their chat, Fujimaru learned she was looking for a Trainer and understood the reason for her gloom, leading him to invite her to the team.

It was all very mundane and ordinary—nothing like a high school romantic comedy.

But Double Bell Light joked with a slight pout, "Isn't Trainer-san being a bit too brief? You could have added something like, 'We both felt each other's extraordinary presence, knowing that with this person, we could surely reach a brilliant future together.'"

To be honest, Double Bell Light was actually quite looking forward to a "Cinderella" style underdog story. She desperately wanted validation from Fujimaru Ritsuka. It wasn't that she was particularly confident in her own strength—quite the opposite; she was frustrated because no one seemed to believe in her. She simply yearned for that kind of future and wanted to hear a total, unwavering affirmation of her potential.

After all, who doesn't have the heart of a romantic young girl?

Fujimaru Ritsuka remained non-committal. "I see. I'll keep that in mind for next time."

Next time? Double Bell Light's ears twitched slightly, and her expression brightened significantly. She thought: Next time, huh? Trainer-san really is a gentle person. I'll be looking forward to it!

No matter how she looked at it, this "next time" couldn't possibly refer to when he was inviting another girl to the team, could it? Surely not!

Once the long but pleasant extra-meal time concluded, Fujimaru Ritsuka decisively announced: "Alright, next up is the evening session. Light, would you like to start tonight, or would you rather adjust your condition and start tomorrow? Personally, I'd suggest observing first before making a decision."

"No need, Trainer-san! I feel better than ever. I look forward to your guidance!" Double Bell Light stood up abruptly, her face full of confidence.

What would the evening session consist of? Training, obviously. And Double Bell Light wasn't bragging—she woke up at 6:00 AM every day for a jog, finishing a full three kilometers before heading to the cafeteria for breakfast. Although she had only started this spring, she could confidently say that even in all of Kasamatsu Tracen, she was among the most self-disciplined Uma Musume!

After all, this was extra training, and most regional girls had neither the interest nor the motivation for it.

This was exactly why Double Bell Light was so proud and why she craved praise so much. She worked so hard; it was only natural to want a compliment, right?

The girl already had a mental image of Fujimaru Ritsuka looking pleasantly surprised by her excellent performance. She began to think happily: When that time comes, what should I do to look both humble and cool?

Half an hour later.

Double Bell Light was huffing and puffing like a steam engine, putting on a world-class display of "exhaustion" for Oguri Cap and Fujimaru Ritsuka.

"Are... are we... there yet?" Although it was embarrassing to say, the poor girl was so winded her speech was slurring.

Wait, why is the first thing we do a ten-kilometer run? Why is the intensity of this "daily training" so high?! What kind of madman trains like this?!

But most importantly...

Looking at Fujimaru Ritsuka, who was running at the very front of the pack, Double Bell Light just wanted to scream in shock: No way! What kind of Trainer sets the pace from the front?! Shouldn't you be on an electric scooter following behind us?!
