Lyra POV:
The wards flare before me, light spilling into the night like trapped stars. Each foci around the city hums, linking together in a fragile lattice. I take a deep breath, focusing on the threads of magic. Kael is beside me, shadowed in the glow, his armor gleaming even in the moonlight.
"Lyra, it's… unstable," he says, voice low but tense. His eyes flicker with that faint stormy light, the energy coursing through him again.
"I know," I reply. "We'll manage it. We have to."
I extend my hand toward him, weaving lunar energy into a thin stream that flows directly through him, anchoring the wards. His pulse quickens; frost veins flare faintly across his skin. He sways but grips my arm for support.
"Kael, hold still," I urge. "The city depends on this. You're the bridge don't let the energy break free."
He grits his teeth, one hand holding the sword at the ready, the other gripping mine. "I… won't."
We move together, stepping onto the main street. Citizens flee around us, some glancing back in awe and fear at the glow pulsing between us. The wards ripple violently, sending arcs of light up into the sky. I feel every pulse through Kael, the strain pulling at him.
"Another surge!" I shout. I push a wave of controlled fire-lunar magic into him. He absorbs it, his armor radiating faintly with the energy. The pulse stabilizes, but just barely.
From the alleyways, ice wolves dart forward, taking advantage of the chaos. Kael lunges immediately, cutting through the first wave. I follow, sending beams of moonlight to scatter the rest. Each strike he takes sends tremors through the wards. I adjust, channeling more energy into him, reinforcing the lattice.
"Lyra!" he gasps. "I feel it… the Blood Moon… it's… stronger tonight."
"I know," I reply, voice steady even as fear coils in my chest. "It's feeding off you, Kael. Every spell we cast… it runs through you."
He stumbles slightly. I catch him mid-fall, locking our magic together. The city shudders around us as the wards pulse like a living heartbeat. Soldiers rush past, reinforcing barriers, but their movements are tiny compared to the surging tide of the curse.
"Keep moving," I tell him. "We can't let the energy stabilize in one place; it'll overload."
He nods, his grip tightening. We advance down the boulevard, wards linked through foci positioned at every corner. Citizens scream and dive to safety as arcs of lunar energy burst from the stones. I feel Kael's strength ebbing, his breaths coming shallow and fast.
"Hold on, Kael," I murmur, drawing more energy into him, anchoring him to the lattice. "We're almost at the center."
From the city gates, a surge of frost shoots forward massive elemental serpents descend, raining shards of ice and fire down the streets. Soldiers scramble to repel them. Kael dives into the fray, sword flashing, cutting through one serpent. The movement destabilizes the wards again.
"Lyra! Now!" he shouts, and I channel an intense pulse through him, binding the energy. His body glows faintly, hands trembling, frost spreading across his armor.
I grit my teeth. "You're holding it too much. Don't… don't push yourself past the limit."
He shakes his head, voice strained. "If I let go… the city…"
The streets tremble as the wards pulse dangerously. I take a step closer, placing my other hand on his chest, pouring my magic directly into him. A shockwave surges outward, knocking back the serpents, scattering soldiers and debris.
"Focus on me, Kael!" I cry. "The lattice depends on your energy channel it slowly, with me!"
He closes his eyes, nodding, drawing in a shaky breath. The glow dims slightly, stabilizing. We move as one, each step sending pulses into the wards, each strike of his sword echoing through the lattice.
The serpents regroup, now attacking from rooftops. I leap to a ledge, sending beams of lunar fire into them. Kael's sword flashes in the moonlight, each strike cutting them down. The energy between us hums like a living thing, responding to our motions.
"Lyra…" he pants. "Every spell… every ward… it… it's draining me faster than before."
"I know," I reply, sweat and frost clinging to my hair. "But we have to hold it. You're the only way."
A massive surge of the Blood Moon pulses through the city. The wards vibrate violently, shards of light and ice erupting from the foci. Kael stumbles, frost crawling across his armor like veins of ice. I dive to catch him, weaving protective wards directly into his chest. The lattice shudders, but the surge is absorbed.
"Almost… done," I whisper, guiding him down the street. Each foci we pass strengthens the link, each step keeping the surge in check.
We reach the central plaza, the largest foci placed at its center. Kael falls to one knee, glowing faintly under my protective spells. I kneel beside him, pressing my hands against the main stone. Energy flows between us, stabilizing the lattice across the city.
"Kael… you're… incredible," I murmur, voice trembling.
He forces a faint smile, exhaustion etched across his face. "We're… incredible… together."
The wards finally settle, the lattice glowing steady, a network of light holding the Blood Moon's curse at bay. Around us, soldiers and citizens stare, awe-struck and frightened. Kael leans heavily on me, frost and sweat mingling, but alive.
"I… I didn't know it would strain you this much," I admit, voice low. "Every spell… every ward… it's a risk to you."
He shakes his head slowly, eyes locking on mine. "I knew the risk. I always do. But if I fail… the city dies. We can't afford that."
I press a hand to his cheek, the warmth seeping through the frost. "Kael… we'll find another way. I can't keep letting you bear it alone."
He tilts his head toward me, voice faint but steady. "Then we'll face it together. Always."
A ripple of energy pulses faintly from the foci, reminding me the Blood Moon isn't gone. The wards hold… for now. But each surge from Kael grows harder to manage. Every spell to save the city is a gamble with his life directly.
I swallow hard. "Next time… we'll need a better plan. One that doesn't burn you out."
He grips my hand, frost still clinging to his armor. "Next time… we fight as one. We've survived worse."
I nod, though my heart aches knowing the truth: every attempt to protect Elaria brings Kael closer to exhaustion or worse. And the Blood Moon's power only grows stronger.
We rise together, the city around us quieting as soldiers reinforce defenses. The foci pulse faintly, steady, but the underlying current of danger hums beneath the surface.
The real test isn't over.
And Kael… my heart knows, the next surge could cost him everything.
The Blood Moon waits, patient and unyielding.
We'll have to face it. Together.
But I feel its gaze, already drawing closer.
And I know, with every step, the next fight could be the last.
