Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Core Within

The room hadn't gone back to normal.

Even after the fight ended—

The tension remained.

Kael could feel it.

Eyes still on him.

Not mocking anymore.

Not doubting.

Watching.

Measuring.

He stood there, chest rising and falling slowly, the last traces of energy flickering faintly around his fingers.

"…What was that?" someone whispered.

"That wasn't just raw power…"

Kael heard them.

But didn't respond.

Because he was asking himself the same question.

The boy turned away first.

"…Tch."

"Don't get comfortable," he said without looking back. "That was nothing."

Kael didn't answer.

But inside—

Something stirred.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Something colder.

"I know."

The room slowly returned to life.

People started moving again.

Talking.

Training.

But the space around Kael remained… open.

No one got too close.

"Come."

The stranger's voice cut through everything.

Kael turned.

They were already walking toward the exit.

"…We're not done."

Kael followed.

The door slid shut behind them.

Silence returned in the hallway.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then—

"What is this place… really?"

The stranger didn't slow down.

"A containment zone."

Kael frowned.

"For people like me?"

"For things like you."

Kael stopped walking.

"…I'm not a thing."

The stranger paused.

Then looked back at him.

"No?"

Their gaze sharpened.

"Then control it."

Silence.

Kael clenched his fists.

"…Teach me."

That made the stranger stop completely.

For a moment—

They said nothing.

Then—

"…Fine."

They turned.

"Follow me."

They led him deeper into the facility.

Past metal halls.

Past sealed doors.

Until they reached a larger chamber.

Empty.

Wide.

Built for something more than training.

"This is where you stop being a liability."

Kael stepped inside.

"…And start becoming what?"

The stranger looked at him.

"Something that survives."

The doors sealed shut behind them.

A low hum filled the room.

Kael felt it instantly.

Pressure.

But different from before.

Controlled.

Focused.

"This room suppresses external interference," the stranger said.

"No distractions. No interference."

Kael took a slow breath.

"…Good."

The stranger stepped forward.

"Show me your energy."

Kael hesitated.

Then raised his hand.

The power responded instantly.

Sparks flickered—

But weaker than before.

Unstable.

"…It's not coming out properly."

"Because you're forcing it."

Kael frowned.

"What do you mean?"

The stranger stepped closer.

"You think power is something you push out."

A pause.

"It isn't."

They tapped his chest.

"It's something you draw from."

Kael froze.

Inside—

Aetherion stirred.

"Core response detected."

"…Core?"

The stranger's eyes narrowed slightly.

"So it's talking to you now."

Kael looked up.

"You knew about that?"

"Of course."

Silence.

Then—

"Every host has one."

Kael's heart skipped.

"A core?"

The stranger nodded.

"The source of your power."

A beat.

"And your greatest weakness."

Kael's expression hardened.

"…How do I use it?"

The stranger stepped back.

"Stop thinking."

Kael blinked.

"…What?"

"Stop trying to control the power."

The room grew quiet.

"Feel it instead."

Kael slowly closed his eyes.

At first—

Nothing.

Then—

Heat.

Deep inside his chest.

Faint.

But there.

"…I feel it."

"Good."

The stranger's voice was calm now.

"Now don't force it."

The heat pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Stronger.

Kael's breathing slowed.

For the first time—

The energy didn't feel wild.

It felt… alive.

Connected.

"Core synchronization beginning."

Kael's eyes snapped open.

Energy surged—

But this time—

It didn't explode.

It flowed.

Smooth.

Controlled.

Electricity wrapped around his arm—

Quiet.

Sharp.

Perfect.

The stranger's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…So you can learn."

Kael stared at his hand.

"…This feels different."

"Because it is."

A pause.

"You're not forcing power anymore."

"You're using it."

Kael clenched his fist.

The energy held.

Stable.

For now.

Then—

A sharp pulse hit his chest.

"—!"

Kael staggered.

The energy flickered violently.

"What—?!"

"Too fast."

The connection snapped.

The power lashed out—

BOOM.

A shockwave burst from his body, cracking the floor beneath him.

Kael dropped to one knee, breathing hard.

"…I lost it…"

"Of course you did."

The stranger didn't move.

"You're not ready."

Kael looked up.

Frustration burning in his eyes.

"Then I will be."

Silence.

Then—

A small smile.

"Good."

The stranger turned away.

"Because next time…"

They glanced back.

"You won't be training."

Kael's chest tightened.

"…What do you mean?"

The stranger's voice lowered.

"There's been an incident."

The air grew cold again.

"One of the hosts…"

A pause.

"…lost control."

Kael froze.

"And this time—"

The stranger's eyes locked onto his.

"It didn't stay contained."

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Kael slowly stood.

The energy inside him stirred again.

Not wild.

Not calm.

Something in between.

"…Then send me."

The stranger watched him for a long moment.

Then—

"…We'll see if you survive."
