Chapter 56 - Chapter 56: Edge of Control

The air was still.

Too still.

Kael stood where he was.

Breathing slowly.

His body ached.

His muscles trembled from the strain.

But his eyes—

Were sharp.

Focused.

Waiting.

"…It's not gone."

His voice was quiet.

Certain.

The distortion hadn't disappeared.

It was hiding.

Watching.

Learning.

Just like him.

A faint shift—

Behind him.

Kael didn't turn.

He stepped forward instead.

The attack came—

And missed.

A second shift—

To his left.

Kael pivoted—

His hand striking out—

Contact.

Stronger this time.

The distortion flickered violently.

Its form almost visible—

Almost real.

"…I see you now."

His voice didn't shake.

The creature responded instantly.

Faster than before—

More aggressive.

It attacked from multiple angles at once.

Kael moved.

Not perfectly—

But enough.

Step. Turn. Block.

His body flowed now.

Not reacting blindly—

But predicting.

The pattern was clearer.

The rhythm—

Broken.

"…Now."

The core pulsed.

Kael didn't hesitate.

"Partial release."

The energy surged—

Controlled.

Focused.

His body responded instantly.

Faster.

Sharper.

The creature struck—

Kael stepped inside its attack—

Closing the distance—

His hand drove forward—

And—

Connected.

Fully.

The distortion shattered.

Its true form revealed—

A twisted, fractured shape…

Like something that didn't belong in reality.

Kael didn't stop.

He moved again—

A second strike—

Then a third—

Each one landing clean.

Each one breaking it further.

The creature let out a sound—

Not a scream.

Something worse.

And then—

It collapsed.

The distortion faded.

Gone.

Silence returned.

Kael stood there.

Breathing hard.

His body was shaking.

"…I…"

He looked down at his hands.

"…I did it…"

For the first time—

He had won.

Then—

The heat surged.

Violent.

Uncontrolled.

Kael's body locked.

His breath caught—

His vision flickers.

"Warning."

"Energy overload."

"…No…"

He staggered back.

The power inside him—

It was rising.

Breaking past the limit he had set.

His veins burned.

His chest felt like it would explode.

"Stabilization failing."

Kael dropped to one knee.

"…Stop…"

The energy didn't listen.

It surged higher.

His vision turned white—

Then red.

Something inside him shifted.

Not just power.

Something deeper.

Older.

His thoughts blurred.

His body moved—

Without him.

He stood.

Slowly.

The air around him distorted—

Space bending slightly.

His eyes—

Glowed.

Not human anymore.

Behind him—

The stranger moved.

For the first time—

Seriously.

"…So this is what you become."

Kael didn't respond.

Because Kael—

Wasn't fully there anymore.

The core pulsed—

Faster.

Louder.

And then—

He moved.

Faster than before.

Not controlled.

Not restrained.

Pure power.

The ground shattered beneath his feet—

As he lunged forward.

Not at the creature.

To a stranger.
