Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The Shadow of the Iron-Empire

The Azure Ghost hovered at the edge of the deep-sea trench, its bioluminescent lights dimmed to a minimum to avoid detection. Below, the Black Coral Temple loomed like a jagged, obsidian tooth rising from the ocean floor. It was an architectural nightmare, built from the calcified remains of ancient sea creatures, and it pulsed with a faint, rhythmic violet light. But it wasn't the ancient architecture that made Kaito's blood run cold—it was the two massive, steam-powered destroyers docked near the temple's grand entrance.

The flags of the Iron-Empire fluttered in the dark, heavy currents. Their iron-plated hulls were covered in glowing orange runes of heat-magic, steam bubbling off their sides even at this depth. These weren't just exploration vessels; they were a specialized strike team, armed with high-pressure harpoon cannons and depth charges designed to crush the hulls of anyone brave or foolish enough to enter the Silent Abyss.

"They found it," Kaito whispered, his voice barely audible over the low thrum of the ship's engine. "They found the temple before me. But how? The coordinates were in my father's private journal."

He knew he couldn't take on two imperial destroyers in a head-on fight. The Azure Ghost was agile and powered by the Heart of the Iron-Whale, but it wasn't a warship. If a single one of those harpoons hit the crystalline canopy, the pressure of the abyss would do the rest of the work for them.

"I have to be a shadow," Kaito decided, his hands moving with practiced precision over the glowing control panel.

Closing his eyes, he reached out to the very core of the ship. "Silas, I hope your stealth-mod is as good as you promised." He began to chant an ancient sea-spell, one that his father had made him memorize when he was just a child sitting on the sun-drenched docks of the harbor.

"Veil of the Deep: Abyssal Shroud!"

A thick, ink-black mist began to leak from the Azure Ghost's exhaust ports, wrapping around the ship like a protective cocoon. This wasn't just physical ink; it was magically charged to absorb sonar waves and hide the ship's heat signature. To any imperial scout, the ship now looked like nothing more than a drifting piece of kelp or a wandering rock.

Slowly, agonizingly, Kaito maneuvered the ship past the first destroyer. He could see the imperial soldiers through their thick, brass diving suits, their mechanical arms hauling heavy crates of glowing blue crystals from the temple's entrance. Those weren't just any crystals—they were Abyssal Shards, the very stabilizers that kept the Abyssal Gate sealed and the ocean's tides in balance.

"They're stealing the seals," Kaito realized with horror, his grip tightening on the controls. "If they take enough of those, the whole seafloor will collapse. They're going to start a cataclysm just for power!"

Just as he was about to slip into a narrow crack in the temple's side wall, a massive spotlight from the second destroyer swept across the water. Kaito froze. The light lingered on his position for ten agonizing seconds. He could hear his own heartbeat thumping in his ears, louder than the ship's engine. Finally, the light moved on.

He slipped inside the temple, the Azure Ghost scraping against the jagged black coral with a sound that felt like nails on a chalkboard. Once inside the internal chamber, the water pressure eased, and the temperature rose significantly. The walls were covered in ancient, glowing runes that told the history of the First Sea-Kings—beings who could control the tides with a single thought.

Kaito docked the ship in a hidden alcove and exited the cockpit. He carried only his father's dagger and a small glowing orb for light. The air inside the temple's air-pockets was thick with the scent of ozone and ancient magic. Following the signal from the message capsule, he reached a vast, circular throne room.

In the center of the room sat a throne carved from a single piece of giant white pearl. And sitting on that throne was a man. His head was bowed, his long hair swaying in the slow currents, and his entire body was encased in a block of translucent, magical ice—The Eternal Frost.

"Father?" Kaito's voice echoed through the silent, haunting chamber. A single tear escaped his eye, floating upward in the water.

But as he stepped forward to touch the ice, the shadows in the corners of the room began to shift. Four imperial guards, armed with high-frequency sonic blades that hissed in the water, stepped into the light. And behind them walked a man in a golden uniform, his chest covered in medals of war—General Vane.

"I was wondering when the little Tide-Walker would show up," Vane said, his voice amplified by a magical resonator. A cold, predatory smile spread across his face. "You've brought me the last piece of the puzzle, Kaito. The Azure Ghost isn't just a ship... it's the only key that can unlock your father's cage. And now, you're going to give it to me."

Kaito unsheathed his dagger, the blade glowing with a fierce blue light. "You'll have to kill me first, Vane."

"Oh, I don't intend to kill you yet," Vane chuckled, signaling his guards to surround him. "I want you to watch as I use your own legacy to tear this ocean apart."
