Chapter 8 - The Aegis

The desert didn't feel real anymore.

Not after everything that had happened.

Elias walked in silence.

The wind had died down.

The sky was clear.

Too clear.

Like the world had decided to pretend nothing was wrong.

Sola walked ahead of him.

Same steady pace.

Same calm presence.

Like none of this was new to her.

Elias finally spoke.

"Where are we going?"

Sola didn't look back.

"Somewhere safe."

He almost laughed.

"Safe?" he said.

"We just got chased by something that shouldn't even exist."

She kept walking.

"That's exactly why."

Elias frowned.

But he followed.

Because right now—

He didn't have any other choice.

They walked for a long time.

Long enough for the silence to become heavy.

Long enough for Elias to start noticing things.

The desert wasn't empty.

Not really.

There were patterns.

Small disturbances in the sand.

Marks that didn't look natural.

Like something had passed through here.

Recently.

Then—

Sola stopped.

No warning.

No signal.

Just… stopped.

Elias nearly walked into her.

"What—"

"Wait," she said.

Her voice was quiet.

But firm.

Elias froze.

The air shifted.

Not like before.

Not an Echo.

Something else.

Sola stepped forward.

And then—

She vanished.

Just like that.

Gone.

Elias stared.

"…okay."

He took a step forward.

Nothing.

Another step.

Still nothing.

Then—

His foot hit something solid.

But there was nothing there.

He reached out slowly.

His hand met resistance.

A surface.

Invisible.

Smooth.

Cold.

"…no way."

Sola's voice came from nowhere.

"Step through."

Elias hesitated.

Then exhaled.

And walked forward.

The world changed instantly.

The desert disappeared.

Replaced by—

Structure.

Clean lines.

White walls.

Metallic surfaces.

Lights embedded into the ceiling.

Soft.

Controlled.

Precise.

Elias stopped.

Turned.

The desert was gone.

Completely.

No entrance.

No exit.

Just walls.

"What is this place?" he asked.

Sola stepped beside him.

"Aegis."

Elias looked at her.

"The Aegis of Now."

The name sat heavy.

He'd never heard it before.

But something about it felt—

Important.

They walked through the facility.

Everything was quiet.

Too quiet.

People moved through the halls, but no one spoke loudly.

No wasted motion.

No unnecessary interaction.

Everyone had a purpose.

And they were focused on it.

Elias noticed the way they looked at him.

Not with fear.

Not even curiosity.

But with something else.

Recognition.

Like they already knew what he was.

That didn't sit right.

They entered a larger room.

Open.

Filled with equipment.

Screens lined the walls.

Data streamed constantly.

In the center lay-

A glass chamber.

Inside it lay…

A piece of metal.

Floating.

Rotating slowly.

Faint blue light pulsing through it.

Elias felt it immediately.

The hum.

The same hum.

"Chronite," Sola said.

Elias stepped closer.

"That's the stuff causing all this?"

"Part of it."

He stared at the object.

It looked… wrong.

Not broken.

Not damaged.

Just… not meant to be here.

"What does it do?" he asked.

Sola didn't answer immediately.

"Depends on who touches it."

A man approached them.

Older.

Sharp eyes.

Controlled posture.

Lab coat.

But not just a scientist.

Something more.

"You brought him," the man said.

Sola nodded once.

"He's stable."

The man studied Elias.

Not casually.

Carefully.

Like he was reading something deeper than appearance.

"Name?" the man asked.

"Elias."

A pause.

"Elias Thorne."

The man's eyes narrowed slightly.

But only for a second.

Then it was gone.

"I'm Dr. Kael," he said.

"Welcome to the Aegis."

They moved deeper into the facility.

This part was different.

Less open.

More controlled.

Doors sealed behind them as they passed.

Each one requiring access.

Authorization.

Clearance.

Elias didn't like it.

"This isn't just a lab," he said.

"No," Sola confirmed.

"It isn't."

They stopped in front of a room.

Kael entered a code.

The door slid open.

Inside of it lay…

Beds.

Medical equipment.

Monitoring systems.

And people.

A lot of people.

Some sitting.

Some lying down.

Some barely moving.

Elias frowned.

"What is this?"

Kael stepped inside.

"Observation."

Elias followed slowly.

His eyes moved across the room.

Then—

He saw it.

A young man.

Couldn't be older than twenty-five.

But his face…

Wrinkled.

His skin thin.

Hands shaking slightly.

Eyes tired.

Too tired.

Elias stopped walking.

"…what happened to him?"

Kael didn't hesitate.

"Chrono-Resonance."

Elias looked at him.

"That's not possible."

Kael met his gaze.

"It is."

Another patient.

This one worse.

Hair completely white.

Body weak.

Connected to machines.

But the monitor showed something else.

Age: 19.

Elias felt something tighten in his chest.

"No…"

Sola stepped forward slightly.

"Flash-aging," she said.

Elias turned to her.

"You said there were side effects."

"I said there was a cost."

"This isn't a cost," Elias snapped.

"This is…"

He stopped.

Because he didn't have a word for it.

Kael spoke calmly.

"Every Sync accelerates entropy when they use their ability."

Elias shook his head.

"No, that doesn't…"

"It does," Kael said.

"Time is not free."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

"Every use," Kael continued,

"pushes the body forward."

"Cellular decay."

"Organ fatigue."

"Neural degradation."

Elias looked back at the patients.

At what they had become.

"How long?" he asked quietly.

Kael didn't soften it.

"Depends on usage."

"Some last years."

"Some last months."

A pause.

"Some don't survive their first event."

Elias stepped back slowly.

Processing.

Trying to understand.

"You're studying this," he said.

"Trying to stop it?"

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Then

"We're trying to control it."

That wasn't the same thing.

Elias noticed.

And he didn't like it.

A sudden movement caught his eye.

Across the room.

A girl.

Sitting alone.

Still.

Too still.

Her eyes were open.

But unfocused.

Like she was looking at something far away.

Elias felt it immediately.

A faint distortion.

It was Subtle.

But it was there.

"Her," he said.

"What's wrong with her?"

Kael followed his gaze.

Then

"Overexposure."

Sola's expression shifted slightly.

Elias stepped closer.

"What does that mean?"

Kael's voice lowered.

"It means she used her ability too much."

Elias swallowed.

"And?"

Kael looked at him.

"She didn't stop."

The girl's fingers twitched.

Just slightly.

Then

The air around her flickered.

For a brief second

She aged.

Then reversed.

Then aged again.

Rapid.

Unstable.

Elias stepped back.

"What is that?"

"No control," Kael said.

"No anchor point."

"She's slipping."

The flicker stopped.

The girl went still again.

Like nothing happened.

But Elias knew.

That wasn't normal.

None of this was.

Silence filled the room.

It was heavy.

It felt Uncomfortable.

But it was real.

Elias turned to Sola.

"You brought me here to show me this?"

Her eyes met his.

"Yes."

"Why?"

A pause.

"So you understand what you are."

Elias looked around one last time.

He looked at the patients.

He looked at the machines.

At the cost.

His cost.

"This isn't help," he said quietly.

"This is a warning."

Sola didn't argue.

Because she knew

He was right.

Somewhere deep in the facility

An alarm flickered briefly.

Then stopped.

Unnoticed.

Or ignored.

A screen updated.

A new signal appeared.

Strong.

Stable.

Different.

Not like the others.

Not like Elias.

Something else had entered the grid.

Something powerful.

IN ANOTHER PART OF THE WORLD…

The air shifted.

Just slightly.

And for a moment time listened.

Then It moved again.
