Chapter 14 - CHAPTER 13: PATTERNS

The corridor felt different now.

Not because it changed.

But because they had.

People moved out of their way.

Not dramatically.

Not obviously.

But enough.

Whispers followed them:

"Those are the girls who beat her…""Kimiko lost… I saw it…""Something's wrong with them…"

Yue Ning noticed it first.

"…They're watching us differently."

Mei Chen smirked slightly.

"…Good."

Lin Xia didn't respond.

Her eyes were moving.

Always moving.

Tracking.

Observing.

"…That one," she said quietly.

They both looked.

A boy leaning against the lockers.

Still.

Too still.

"…He hasn't moved since we turned the corner," Lin Xia added.

Mei Chen frowned.

"…Watching us?"

"…No," Lin Xia said.

"…Studying."

A pause.

"…Like we did to Kimiko."

Silence.

Yue Ning swallowed.

"…So he's dangerous."

Lin Xia nodded once.

"…Very."

🔹 THE DIFFERENCE NOW

Before—

They reacted.

Now—

They read first.

Every step.

Every glance.

Every breath.

Nothing was random anymore.

🔹 THE NEW PLAYER

He finally moved.

Slow.

Controlled.

No dramatic entrance.

No crazy smile.

That was worse.

"…You're the ones," he said calmly.

His voice was soft.

Flat.

No emotion.

"…You saw through her."

The corridor went quiet.

Not silent.

But aware.

People were listening now.

Mei Chen crossed her arms.

"…And?"

He stepped closer.

"…I want to see if it was luck."

Lin Xia met his gaze.

"…It wasn't."

A pause.

Then—

"…Good," he said.

A screen flickered.

GAME REQUEST INITIATED

But this time—

No glitches.

No force.

Clean.

Legitimate.

🔹 THE RULE

He spoke before they could respond.

"…One player."

They froze slightly.

"…What?" Yue Ning asked.

"…Only one of you plays me," he said.

His eyes shifted to Lin Xia.

"…You."

Silence.

Mei Chen stepped forward immediately.

"…No. We don't split—"

Lin Xia raised her hand.

Stopping her.

"…I'll play."

Yue Ning's voice was small.

"…Are you sure…?"

Lin Xia nodded once.

"…He's not like Kimiko."

She looked at him again.

"…He's better."

🔹 THE GAME CHOICE

"…Pick," he said.

"…Chess, checkers, cards… anything simple."

Simple.

That word felt wrong.

Lin Xia thought.

Fast.

Careful.

Then—

"…Checkers."

Mei Chen blinked.

"…Checkers?"

Lin Xia didn't look at her.

"…Less pieces. Faster reads. No hiding."

The boy smiled slightly.

"…Good choice."

🔹 THE ARENA

The corridor shifted.

The floor became a giant checkers board.

Black and white.

Clean.

Sharp.

Pieces appeared.

But unlike before—

There was something else.

A faint delay.

Barely noticeable.

But Yue Ning caught it.

"…Lin Xia…"

"…I see it," Lin Xia said quietly.

🔹 THE REAL DANGER

This player wasn't flashy.

Wasn't loud.

Didn't need to be.

Because his cheating—

Was invisible.

Not micro-movement.

Not positioning.

Timing.

Tiny delays.

System response shifts.

So small—

You wouldn't notice unless you were looking for it.

And now—

They were.

🔹 THE START

GAME: CHECKERS

TIMER: 12:00

He moved first.

A simple diagonal step.

Normal.

Too normal.

Lin Xia responded.

Mirroring.

Slow.

Watching.

Counting.

Every movement.

Every delay.

Three moves in—

She saw it.

The system confirmed his move…

A fraction too early.

Before full contact.

Her eyes sharpened.

"…So that's how you do it."

He looked up.

Just slightly.

"…You noticed."

Not a question.

A statement.

Lin Xia didn't answer.

🔹 GROWTH

Before—

She would react.

Now—

She adapted.

She adjusted her timing.

Waited half a second longer before confirming moves.

Forced the system to sync differently.

Breaking his rhythm.

The boy's expression changed.

Barely.

But enough.

"…You're learning mid-game…"

🔹 PRESSURE

The board tightened.

Pieces disappeared.

Traps formed.

Then—

Lin Xia made a move.

Sacrificed a piece.

Mei Chen's eyes widened.

"…Again?"

Yue Ning shook her head slowly.

"…No…"

Because now—

The angles shifted.

The timing broke.

The cheat lost its advantage.

🔹 THE MOMENT

He made his move.

Fast.

Too fast.

For the first time—

It showed.

The delay glitched.

Tiny.

But real.

The system flickered.

The crowd didn't notice.

But Lin Xia did.

And now—

She had him.

🔹 FINAL POSITION

Three pieces left.

Two for him.

One for her.

Losing position.

But winning pattern.

She moved.

One step.

Then jumped.

Double capture.

The board locked.

He froze.

"…Impossible."

Lin Xia looked at him.

Calm.

"…Not really."

A pause.

"…You rely on it too much."

His eyes widened slightly.

Same words.

Different target.

🔹 RESULT

WIN CONFIRMED

No explosion.

No chaos.

Just silence.

Because this one—

Everyone knew—

Was strong.

🔹 AFTERMATH

He stood there.

Not angry.

Not shocked.

Just…

Thinking.

"…You didn't just see it," he said quietly.

"…You adapted to it."

Lin Xia didn't respond.

She turned back to her team.

Mei Chen grinned.

"…Okay… now that was insane."

Yue Ning smiled slightly.

"…We're getting better."

Lin Xia looked ahead.

The corridor stretched endlessly.

But now—

It didn't feel unknown.

It felt like a system.

One they could break.

Somewhere—

The screen flickered again.

…LEARNING RATE INCREASING…

And something…

Was very interested in them now.
