Chapter 19 - A Worthy Opponent

"You don't have to do this."

Ethan's voice was low, meant for Adrian's ears only. The training yard had filled quickly. Students pressed in from all sides, their voices blending into a low buzz of anticipation.

Word traveled fast in the Academy. Cassius Vorne had challenged the frontier boy on the very first day of school.

Adrian kept his eyes on the sparring circle. Cassius was already there, his red coat untouched by dust or sweat.

Above his shoulder, a shape flickered. A fire spirit. Its form shifted like flames caught in a storm wind, larger than most, its glow so intense that heat rolled across the yard even from a distance.

Beside Adrian, Tessa sucked in a breath. "That's a Vorne fire spirit. His family has bonded with them for generations. They say his is one of the strongest in a hundred years."

Adrian studied the spirit. It had a deep presence. The students nearest Cassius had stepped back, their eyes watering and their faces flushed with heat.

His own bond stood silent at the edge of the crowd. Lilith's ash-blonde hair hung past her shoulders, her amber eyes fixed on him, calm and waiting.

"You're still going to fight him?" Ethan asked.

Adrian stepped into the circle without answering.

---

Cassius raised a hand. The fire spirit flickered once, then sank into his chest. The hot temperature dropped immediately.

"Soul energy only," Cassius said, drawing his blade. "No spirits. No bond manifestations."

Adrian nodded. "Agreed."

Cassius settled into his stance. His blade was steady, his breathing even. "Let's see what you can do."

Adrian drew his blade. He had spent the night practicing his soul energy control with Lilith, failing more times than he succeeded. But he had learned.

He reached for the warmth now. The energy came, flowing through him. He pushed it into his blade and the steel began to glow with a faint, pale blue light.

Cassius's eyes narrowed. He had thought Adrian might not know how to draw soul energy. That would have explained why he hadn't used it during the Combat trials. But seeing him use it now, he understood. The boy was powerful.

A dangerous smile crossed his lips. He wanted to see how powerful.

"Good," he said. "Let's go."

---

Cassius moved first.

His blade came in low, angled toward Adrian's ribs. Adrian's footwork carried him back, his own blade rising to meet the strike. Steel clashed against steel. Soul energy flared at the impact, blue sparks scattering.

Cassius pressed forward. His strikes came in sequence—low, high, low again—each one flowing into the next with the ease of long practice. Adrian gave ground, his blade deflecting each blow. His arms burned.

Cassius was stronger. Faster. His movements were perfect, drilled into him since childhood.

But Adrian had learned to survive.

He saw the opening before it came. Cassius's blade was high, his left side exposed for a fraction of a second and Adrian went for it.

His blade cut toward the gap. Soul energy flared brightly along the edge as it struck.

Cassius barely blocked. Steel scraped against steel, and for a moment they stood locked together.

"Where did you learn to move like that?" Cassius asked.

Adrian shoved back. "The Scar."

Cassius's mouth twitched. It might have been a smile "Good."

He came at Adrian again.

The second exchange was faster.

Adrian let Cassius come to him, let him push, let him burn through his energy. He gave ground when he needed to, held when he could, and every time Cassius's guard dropped, he struck.

Soul energy flickered along his blade with each exchange. He was learning to control it, to let it flow without wasting it. The blue glow steadied and his arms stopped burning.

He landed two hits.

The first was a glancing blow off Cassius's shoulder. The crowd gasped in surprise.

A voice cut through the noise. "He actually hit him."

The second hit came when Cassius overreached. His blade was high and his chest was open. Adrian's blade slammed against his ribs.

Cassius stepped back. His breathing was heavier now, but his face was calm. He looked at Adrian differently.

"You're controlling it better than I expected," he said. "When did you learn?"

Adrian met his eyes. "Last night."

"Last night?" Cassius doubted him. It was impossible to learn soul energy control in one night but seeing the serious expression on the other boy's face, he might be telling the truth.

Cassius studied him for a moment. Then he raised his blade.

"One more exchange," he said. "Full power."

Adrian's grip tightened on his blade. He had been holding back, conserving his energy. Cassius knew. And Adrian knew that Cassius had been holding back too. But now he was asking to see what Adrian could really do.

Adrian reached for the warmth in his chest and pulled.

The energy surged.

It flowed through him faster now, filling his arms, his chest, his blade. The glow brightened from pale blue to something deeper.

The crowd went dead silent.

Cassius watched. His own blade glowed bright orange-red, the heat from his spirit bleeding through the bond. The air around him shimmered.

"Ready?" Cassius asked.

Adrian raised his blade. "Ready."

His blade came in fast, and Adrian met it. Steel clashed against steel, soul energy flaring bright. Orange and blue sparks scattered across the yard. Adrian did not give ground. His arms felt lighter and his reactions sharper than ever before.

They exchanged blows again. Cassius pressed forward, and Adrian held. Each strike was faster than the last. Each block heavier.

The crowd was shouting now. They were surprised by such intensity.

"He's matching him!"

"He's not backing down!"

Adrian ignored them fully focused on Cassius's blade. He read the patterns and waited for an opening.

It came on the seventh strike.

Cassius's blade was high, his left side exposed. Adrian closed in. His blade flared with energy as he cut toward the gap.

Cassius blocked. But this time, Adrian did not stop. He stepped into the strike, deflecting Cassius's blade past his shoulder. Then he drove forward, his shoulder slamming into Cassius's chest.

They both went down in a heap.

Adrian landed on top, his blade pressed against Cassius's throat. Cassius's blade was on the ground, knocked from his hand. His chest heaved and his face was flushed with exhaustion.

For a moment, neither of them moved. Adrian's arms were shaking. His chest heaved as well. His soul energy bar flashed at the edge of his vision.

[Soul Energy: 8/100]

Cassius looked up at him. Then he laughed.

He pushed Adrian off and sat up, brushing dirt from his coat.

"That was reckless," he said. "Charging in like that."

Adrian sat back, his blade still in his hand, his body screaming for rest. "It worked."

Cassius studied him for a moment. Then he stood and offered Adrian his hand. "You almost passed out. Your energy was flickering."

Adrian took it. Cassius pulled him to his feet. "I noticed."

The fire spirit flickered back into view above Cassius's shoulder, its flames dim. Cassius raised a hand again, and it vanished.

"Tomorrow," he said. "Seventh bell. Same place."

Adrian blinked. "Again?"

Cassius smiled. "You weren't lying about learning soul energy yesterday. You don't know what comes after. You need to learn to hold your energy longer. You have the control. Now you need endurance."

He walked away before Adrian could answer.

Adrian remained standing at the center of the circle, long after the noise of the crowd began to return.

His body screamed in protest now that the tension had faded. The adrenaline that had carried him through the fight was gone, leaving only exhaustion in its wake.

For a moment, he simply stood there, staring at the ground where the clash had ended.

Then the system flickered to life.

He closed it quickly. Not here. Not in front of everyone.

He found Lilith at the edge of the crowd. She walked toward him.

"Your room," she said quietly.

He nodded and followed her, slipping through the noisy crowd.

---

The dormitory was empty when they got back. Ethan and Tessa had been pulled away by other students, their questions swallowed by the crowd. Adrian closed the door behind him and leaned against it.

He pulled up the interface again.

[Rank Up Available: E-Rank]

He accepted.

Heat flooded through him. His muscles tightened, then relaxed. His bones ached, then settled. His shoulders broadened. His jaw sharpened. The softness from months of border work hardened into something leaner.

He stumbled to the small mirror and stared.

His face was sharper. His grey eyes seemed lighter, almost silver. His hair had darkened from brown back to black, the false appearance of Dorian peeling away.

He looked like himself again. But a refined version.

[Soul Energy: 500/500]

[Apex Soul detected. Soul energy capacity increased beyond standard E-rank limits.]

[New Skill: Soul Shield]

[Soul Energy Control Proficiency: 45%]

[Equipment Slot Unlocked: Armor (2/3)]

He reached for the warmth and pushed it out. A blue shield flickered in front of him. He held it for thirty seconds. When he let it drop, he was barely winded.

He looked at Lilith. She watched him from the bed.

"Check your soul space," she said. "It should have grown."

He closed his eyes and reached for it.

The soul space was no longer empty.

The hearth was still there, its flames steady and warm. But now walls rose around it—rough stone, unfinished, but solid. A doorway led somewhere he could not see. The darkness had pulled back.

He stood in the center of the room, and for the first time, it did not feel like a void.

"You're growing faster than I expected," Lilith said.

He turned. She stood in the doorway, her silver hair loose, her red eyes watching him.

"When did this happen?" he asked.

"The walls grew when you ranked up. Your soul space expands as you do."

That was actually good! It would save him the stress of creating everything by himself.

He looked at the rough stone. It was unfinished but it was progress.

"It's not a castle yet," he said.

She smiled. "It will be."

---

He opened his eyes.

A knock came at the door.

Lilith quickly changed Adrian's appearance back to Dorian before he crossed the room and opened the door.

Serena Ashford stood in the hallway.

Her dark hair was loose, falling past her shoulders. Her coat was gone, replaced by a simple shirt and trousers. Without the Ashford crest, she looked different. Younger and less like a statue.

She looked at him. Her eyes moved over his face, his shoulders, the new sharpness of his jaw.

"You've... changed," she said.

Adrian felt something tighten in his chest. A memory of Rivergate surfaced. Her face in the crowd, turning away. His hands wanted to clench but he forced the urge away.

He did not answer.

She smiled. It was not the cold smile she wore in the hall. It was something else.

"I wanted to see what Cassius lost to," she said. "I wasn't expecting this."

She stepped closer, her face hovering a few inches away from his face. Adrian did not move.

"Tomorrow," she said, her voice soft, "when you fight him again, don't hold back. I want to see what you can really do."

She stared a moment longer, then turned and walked away.

Adrian stood in the doorway, watching her go. His jaw was tight. His hands were steady, but only because he was forcing them to be.

Across the yard, Serena Ashford had stopped at the corner. She glanced back once, her expression unreadable. Then she was gone.

Through the bond, Adrian felt Lilith's presence sharpen.

"You know her?" She asked behind him.

He closed the door and walked back in.

"Yes, I knew her"
