The heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung shut behind us, and the thick carpet of the hallway muffled our footsteps. We walked away from the silent executives without saying another word. The adrenaline from the intense corporate battle was finally starting to fade from my bloodstream, and a deep wave of physical exhaustion washed over my shoulders.
We reached the private elevator at the end of the corridor. Mason pushed the metal button, and we waited in silence while the digital numbers counted down.
The silver doors slid open, and we stepped inside the empty steel box. Mason leaned his broad shoulders against the back wall and let out a very long, heavy breath. He reached his hands up to his neck and pulled his blue silk tie loose. He unbuttoned the top button of his white dress shirt to give himself some room to breathe.
