Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Too Close

The silence changed.

---

Not empty.

Not calm.

---

Heavy.

---

Ayaan didn't look away from her.

---

Not after that.

---

Not after she said it.

---

You failed.

---

The words stayed.

---

Not because of emotion.

---

Because of accuracy.

---

---

He stepped forward.

---

Slowly.

---

---

Meera didn't move.

---

---

Of course she didn't.

---

---

Their distance closed again.

---

Closer than before.

---

---

"You created a blind spot," Ayaan said.

---

---

Meera tilted her head slightly.

---

---

"Yes."

---

---

"You altered your pattern deliberately."

---

---

"Yes."

---

---

"To test my observation."

---

---

"Yes."

---

---

Each answer came easily.

---

---

Unfiltered.

---

---

Ayaan stopped just inches away.

---

---

"You're interfering with the system," he said.

---

---

Meera's lips curved faintly.

---

---

"You're not a system."

---

---

A pause.

---

---

"You just think you are."

---

---

---

Ayaan's gaze sharpened.

---

---

That was incorrect.

---

---

Everything followed structure.

Patterns.

Predictability.

---

---

That was how control was maintained.

---

---

But—

---

---

She had broken it.

---

---

Not randomly.

---

---

Intentionally.

---

---

---

"You left without being seen," Ayaan said.

---

---

"Yes."

---

---

"Explain how."

---

---

Meera didn't answer immediately.

---

---

Instead—

---

She leaned slightly closer.

---

---

Reducing the already minimal distance.

---

---

Now—

---

Their breathing was almost in sync.

---

---

"You didn't lose me," she said softly.

---

---

Ayaan's eyes locked onto hers.

---

---

"You assumed I stayed."

---

---

---

A pause.

---

---

Then—

---

She added quietly—

---

---

"You stopped checking."

---

---

---

That—

---

Was the error.

---

---

Not absence of observation.

---

---

False certainty.

---

---

---

Ayaan's expression didn't change.

---

---

But internally—

---

The adjustment was immediate.

---

---

No assumption.

No fixed conclusions.

---

---

Only continuous verification.

---

---

---

He stepped even closer.

---

---

Now—

---

There was no space left.

---

---

Meera didn't step back.

---

---

Didn't look away.

---

---

Didn't break.

---

---

---

"You're doing it again," she whispered.

---

---

Ayaan's voice was lower now.

---

---

"Doing what?"

---

---

"Getting too close."

---

---

---

A pause.

---

---

But she didn't move.

---

---

Didn't create distance.

---

---

Didn't stop him.

---

---

---

"Then move," Ayaan said.

---

---

---

Meera smiled slightly.

---

---

"Make me."

---

---

---

Silence.

---

---

That line—

---

Changed something.

---

---

Not playful.

---

Not careless.

---

---

Intentional.

---

---

---

Ayaan didn't touch her.

---

---

Not yet.

---

---

But his hand lifted slightly.

---

---

Paused.

---

---

Just inches from her wrist.

---

---

---

The space between contact—

---

---

And restraint—

---

---

Was thinner than before.

---

---

---

Meera's gaze dropped briefly.

---

---

To his hand.

---

---

Then back to his eyes.

---

---

Still calm.

---

Still certain.

---

---

---

"You won't," she said softly.

---

---

Ayaan's fingers stilled.

---

---

"Why?" he asked.

---

---

---

Meera leaned closer.

---

---

Close enough that her voice barely carried.

---

---

"Because you don't act without certainty," she said.

---

---

---

A pause.

---

---

Then—

---

Even quieter—

---

---

"And you're not certain about me."

---

---

---

That—

---

Was true.

---

---

For the first time—

---

She wasn't predictable.

---

---

Not fully.

---

---

---

Ayaan lowered his hand.

---

---

Not in defeat.

---

---

In recalculation.

---

---

---

"You're right," he said.

---

---

Meera's expression didn't change.

---

---

"I know."

---

---

---

Silence settled again.

---

---

But now—

---

It was different.

---

---

Closer.

---

---

More dangerous.

---

---

---

Ayaan stepped back.

---

---

Breaking the distance.

---

---

Not because he had to.

---

---

Because it was necessary.

---

---

---

"You're not reacting the way you should," he said.

---

---

Meera tilted her head slightly.

---

---

"What way is that?"

---

---

"Fear."

---

---

---

A pause.

---

---

Then—

---

She smiled.

---

---

Not softly.

---

---

Not shy.

---

---

Something else.

---

---

---

"Why would I be afraid?" she asked quietly.

---

---

---

Ayaan didn't answer.

---

---

Because that question—

---

Didn't have a simple answer anymore.

---

---

---

Then—

---

His phone vibrated.

---

---

Once.

---

---

Sharp.

---

---

Immediate.

---

---

---

Both of them looked at it.

---

---

---

Ayaan picked it up.

---

---

Unknown number.

---

---

Again.

---

---

---

He opened the message.

---

---

And for the first time—

---

His expression changed.

---

---

Not visibly.

---

---

But enough.

---

---

---

Meera noticed.

---

---

"What is it?" she asked.

---

---

---

Ayaan didn't answer immediately.

---

---

Then—

---

He turned the screen toward her.

---

---

---

A photo.

---

---

---

Taken from outside.

---

---

Grainy.

---

Distant.

---

---

---

But clear enough.

---

---

---

The window.

---

---

This room.

---

---

---

And inside—

---

---

Them.

---

---

Standing close.

---

---

Too close.

---

---

---

Below it—

---

One line.

---

---

"Now I can see both of you."

---

---

---

Silence.

---

---

Heavy.

---

---

Real.

---

---

---

Meera's gaze didn't leave the screen.

---

---

---

"They're here," she said quietly.

---

---

---

Ayaan's grip tightened slightly on the phone.

---

---

---

This wasn't observation anymore.

---

---

---

This was proximity.

---

---

---

And that meant—

---

---

Whatever this was—

---

---

It had already escalated further than expected.
