Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: What Comes Next

The village was already awake when Amir returned.

Not loudly.

Not chaotically.

But deliberately.

People moved with purpose.

Steps measured.

Voices low.

Everything felt… aware.

Different from before.

Amir stepped into the clearing.

This time—

The eyes that turned toward him weren't the same.

Still cautious.

Still watchful.

But no longer dismissive.

"…they know," Amir muttered.

"They see change," the Anito said.

"…barely."

"That is enough."

Footsteps approached.

The observer.

Calm as ever.

"…you didn't fall," they said.

Amir exhaled.

"…almost did."

"…but you didn't."

A pause.

"…that matters here."

Amir glanced toward the center of the village.

"…so what now?"

"…now they decide if you're worth keeping."

"…comforting."

The observer turned.

"…follow."

Again.

No hesitation.

Amir followed.

The fire at the center burned steady.

Unmoved by the morning wind.

The three elders were already there.

Waiting.

"…you return standing," the first said.

"…that was expected," the second added.

The third said nothing.

But their gaze lingered longer this time.

"…state the result," the first said.

The observer stepped forward.

"…he adapted," they said.

"…imperfectly."

"…but without reliance."

Silence followed.

The fire cracked softly.

"…and your judgment?" the second asked.

A pause.

"…he is not stable yet," the observer said.

"…but he is no longer a liability."

Amir raised an eyebrow slightly.

"…that's high praise."

No one reacted.

The third elder finally spoke.

"…you listened."

Amir nodded.

"…I had to."

"…most don't."

Silence.

Then—

"…you will remain," the first said.

Amir exhaled slowly.

"…under continued trial," the second added.

"…figured."

The third leaned forward slightly.

"…your presence still draws attention."

Amir's expression hardened.

"…I know."

"…then understand this," the first said.

"…what follows you is no longer distant."

The air shifted.

Subtly.

But enough.

"…what does that mean?" Amir asked.

The observer's gaze moved toward the mountains.

"…it's closer."

Amir felt it.

Not through the wind.

Not directly.

But something—

Faint.

Watching.

"…how close?" he asked.

No one answered immediately.

Then—

"…close enough to test this place," the second said.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

"…so it's coming here," Amir said.

"…it already has," the third replied.

Amir's grip tightened.

"…then we deal with it."

The first elder's gaze sharpened.

"…you don't deal with what you don't understand."

"…then I learn faster."

A pause.

Not rejection.

Not approval.

Evaluation.

"…you will not face it alone," the observer said.

Amir glanced at them.

"…that doesn't sound like you."

"…this isn't about you."

Fair.

"…then what is it about?"

The observer's voice lowered slightly.

"…balance."

The wind stirred faintly.

Distant.

Uncertain.

"…it's changing," the Anito said.

Amir's eyes narrowed.

"…what is?"

"…it."

The fire flickered.

For the first time.

Not from wind.

From something else.

"…it's not testing anymore," the Anito continued.

"…it's preparing."

Silence gripped the clearing.

Even the villagers nearby had stopped moving.

Watching.

Waiting.

"…then what happens next?" Amir asked.

The third elder stood slowly.

"…now…"

A pause.

"…we prepare as well."

The observer stepped beside Amir.

Not as an opponent.

Not as a judge.

Something else.

"…you'll train," they said.

"…harder."

Amir smirked slightly.

"…figured."

"…and faster."

"…that part I don't like."

"…it doesn't matter."

The wind moved again.

Faint.

But this time—

Not alone.

Somewhere beyond the mountains—

Something answered it.
