Chapter 57 - Chapter 57: The Battle of Fairy Tail, Part 4

His eyes fixed on the charging Laxus, Chen Fan simply extended his right hand.

With a sharp crack, Laxus, in his lightning form, was repelled instantly. He slammed into the wall of Kardia Cathedral with a deafening boom.

But Laxus did not stop. The golden lightning danced across the walls before leaping back toward Chen Fan. Chen Fan let out a helpless sigh and extended his hand once more. Again, the lightning was swatted away, crashing through the masonry and leaving a massive hole in the wall.

The pattern repeated again and again. Laxus attacked relentlessly, only to be tossed back every time. The sheer force of their collisions caused the cathedral to groan, the floor sinking an entire level as dust and debris filled the air. Laxus charged yet again, and Chen Fan's hand moved with mechanical precision to meet him.

Suddenly, the lightning bolt stopped just inches from Chen Fan's palm. It scattered into thousands of sparks, only to reform instantly behind him. Chen Fan's lips curled into a faint smile; he didn't even bother to turn around. The golden electricity slammed into his back.

A sharp cry of agony rang out.

Laxus could no longer maintain his elemental form. He was thrown violently into the ground, creating a massive crater amidst a swirling cloud of dust. Panting heavily, Laxus propped himself up on his hands, kneeling in the rubble. He glared at Chen Fan with eyes full of hatred and unyielding resentment.

"Give it up, Laxus," Chen Fan said, looking down at the battered man. "You aren't my match right now."

"Give up? Haha... Hahaha!" Laxus forced himself to his feet, his legs trembling. He threw his head back and laughed maniacally toward the ceiling. Then, the laughter stopped abruptly. He lowered his head and locked eyes with Chen Fan. "You tell me to give up? Why should I? What right do you have? Just because you're the future Master? Is that it?"

Steadying himself, Laxus's voice dropped into a low, gravelly tone. "All these years... Grandpa kicked my father out and poured all his love into you people. Fine, I could accept that. But every time I finished a mission,

every honor I earned was credited to me being Makarov's grandsonjust a byproduct of Fairy Tail! No one ever acknowledged me. No one ever admitted that I was the one who achieved those things!" He pounded his chest, shouting at Chen Fan with an expression twisted by deep-seated grief.

Chen Fan watched him with a hint of surprise. He had never seen the proud Laxus break down like this. He opened his mouth to speak, but Laxus cut him off with a sharp wave of his hand.

"Don't give me your high-and-mighty speeches! I thought I could trust you once. You were the first person to ever come to me to ask about magic. But what did you do? You didn't even learn those spells for yourself! You look down on me, don't you? Fine, maybe you have that right because you're stronger. You don't even need my magic."

Laxus muttered to himself as he pulled a coin from his pocket. Seeing this, Chen Fan realized what was coming.

He reached out and shouted, "Stop! You can't control that move yet! In a place like this, too many people will get hurt!"

Seeing Chen Fan's panicked expression, Laxus grinned. "Haha! To think you'd actually be afraid!" He flicked the coin into the air.

Whirrr

The coin spun rapidly in mid-air. Golden electricity began to converge with terrifying speed in front of Laxus's hand. Chen Fan's brow furrowed. "Tsk," he hissed under his breath, thrusting his own hand forward.

Two sounds erupted almost simultaneously.

A massive pillar of light shot through the roof of the cathedral. The ceiling shattered into dust, followed by the surrounding walls which began to disintegrate piece by piece. A gust of wind blew through, and in an instant, the church was gone.

Laxus stared blankly at the sky where the roof used to be, stunned by the sheer destructive power he had unleashed. The brilliance of the blast drew the attention of everyone in the town.

Looking at Laxus's dazed state, Chen Fan realized the man had truly never tested the limits of that move. He felt a wave of relief; if the original timeline had played out and Natsu and Gajeel had been here, they would have been erased from existence.

"Alright, Laxus. Come with me to the Master. I'll"

"I haven't lost! How could I lose? I am the strongest in Fairy Tail! I still have magic more powerful than that!" Laxus's face was a mask of madness. He seemed unable to process reality.

He brought his hands together in front of his chest. "Aaaaaah!" he roared. A massive surge of magical power overflowed. Scales began to ripple across his cheeks and arms. The ground beneath him crumbled, stones floating into the air before being vaporized by the sheer pressure.

Chen Fan knew exactly what Laxus was attempting, but he didn't move to stop him. This was the only way Laxus would ever truly see himself.

"Fairy Law, activate!" Laxus bellowed, slamming his palms together.

Daaaaang

A sound like a massive bronze bell echoed through the air. A giant golden magic circle appeared above the ruins of the cathedralthe legendary super-magic, Fairy Law. A blinding light engulfed everything.

"Haha! You're finally dead! Hahaha!" Laxus laughed at the sky. Suddenly, his laughter choked off.

When Laxus mechanically lowered his head, he saw Chen Fan standing before him, completely unscathed. Disbelief flooded Laxus's eyes.

Thump!

Chen Fan delivered a swift chop to Laxus's neck. Drained of all his magic, Laxus collapsed into unconsciousness.

Chen Fan clapped the dust off his hands. He would leave the rest to the Master. If it were a woman, he might have said something, but with a man... well, Chen Fan found it hard to be sentimental. Picking Laxus up by the back of his coat, he flew toward the Fairy Tail guild.

Under Makarov's stunned gaze, Chen Fan dropped Laxus in the Master's room. Leaving the grandfather and grandson to sort things out, he walked back out. He had done his part; the rest was up to Makarov. He wasn't worried about Laxus attacking the Masterthe kid was still too green compared to the old man.
