Chapter 69 - Nyx the Cat

When Jace woke up, it was evening, and the heightened sensitivity from the glove had finally disappeared.

After washing his face, he went into the kitchen and prepared himself some tea.

He returned to the living room and sat down, enjoying the warm brew.

While sipping his tea, he watched the cat intently.

Nyx sat near the wall, lazily licking her paws and cleaning herself.

He remembered playing with a cat in his childhood by pointing a red laser at the floor; the cat would jump on it, trying to trap the red dot under its paws.

Jace wondered if it would work on Nyx, who was, after all, a Beyonder cat.

Using his illusion abilities, he made a bright red dot appear on the floorboards in front of her.

Nyx, who had been wiping her neck with a paw, instantly stopped. Her ears perked up as she glanced curiously at the red dot. It moved slightly, twitching across the wood.

She pounced, pressing her paws down hard to stop it from getting away. She peeked cautiously under her paws to see what exactly she had caught, but to her surprise, there was nothing there.

She immediately started looking around, searching frantically for the vanished dot.

"Hehe... he."

Nyx stopped right there. Turning her head, she looked at the man who had been sipping tea.

He wasn't sipping anymore; instead, he had one hand clamped over his mouth, his face turning red and his eyes squinted shut.

In the end, Jace couldn't hold back his laughter.

"Hahaha... ha!" He laughed out loud, his eyes watering as he banged the couch with his left hand.

"Haha, I can't believe you fell for it! A Beyonder cat fell for a basic illusion... hahaha!" Jace pointed a finger at Nyx, doubled over with laughter.

Nyx watched him with a plain but grave expression... until she couldn't help herself anymore.

"Hisss!"

Sharp nails extended from her paws as she pounced onto the table and then launched herself at Jace, her paws spread wide.

"—Nyx—wai—"

— —

"Jeez, can't you take a joke?" Jace grumbled as he inspected the fresh scratches on his hands.

Nyx, meanwhile, glared at him with her piercing green eyes from her perch on the table.

Jace sighed and looked at the cat. "Have you digested the potion?"

The cat tilted her head in confusion.

"You don't know?" Jace was surprised that the cat was unaware of the Acting Method, so he took the liberty of explaining the concept to her in detail.

"Then I have digested it," Nyx said in her childish voice after hearing the explanation.

Jace looked at her in surprise. "When?"

"About two months ago," the cat replied.

Jace smiled. "So, do you want to advance to Sequence 7? I'll brew the potion for you."

Nyx thought for a moment and gave a small, solemn nod of her head.

"Okay, I'll go buy the supplementary ingredients," Jace said with enthusiasm.

He got up, threw on his coat, and headed out into the evening air.

— —

After two hours, Jace returned with the supplementary ingredients and some groceries.

Under the watchful eyes of the cat, he immediately brewed the potion and confirmed its safety with divination.

They both sat in the living room, Jace wearing the 'Healing Glove' on his right hand.

Nyx sat on the table, staring at the glass of potion.

She had seen the woman, Sarah, suffer after taking her potion. Being a young cat, Nyx was naturally afraid of the pain, but her rational side as a Spectator told her it was necessary.

As if sensing her hesitation, Jace said, "It will be easier for you, since it's been two months since you digested the Sequence 8 Telepathist potion."

He looked at her, but she only glanced at him weakly before turning her gaze back to the liquid.

"Meow~" Nyx mewed, a low and sad sound, clearly afraid of what was to come.

Jace sighed. "Nyx, I'm right here. Besides, the glove on my hand will help," he said, raising the black leather glove to show her.

Nyx stayed silent for a few minutes, preparing herself.

Finally, she picked up the glass with both paws and poured the contents into her mouth.

Jace raised an eyebrow; if the situation hadn't been so serious, he would have found her comical, human-like actions quite funny.

The process of advancement began. It was shorter than Sarah's had been, and seemingly easier.

After the successful advancement, Nyx sat weakly on the table, breathing heavily as she began to cogitate and scan her new powers.

Jace raised his gloved hand and touched the cat's back gently.

He began to heal her; though there were no physical wounds, her soul was slightly frayed and her strength was drained.

As Jace healed her soul and restored her energy, the cat fell asleep, purring under the warm sensation.

After healing Nyx for several more minutes, Jace stood up, feeling uncomfortable as the side effects started affecting him.

His spirituality was drained from healing the cat.

His stomach growled in hunger, but he was in no state to cook.

Instead, he pulled out a pack of bread he had bought earlier and ate it with some jam.

After satisfying his hunger, Jace walked into his bedroom and laid carefully on the bed. The effects of the glove were truly strange, making the sheets feel like sandpaper against his skin, so he had to be very still.

Now Jace had a Sequence 7 Psychiatrist by his side, even if it was a cat.

Jace smiled as he recalled the novels he had read about protagonists having powerful dragons as pets.

But, of course, Nyx was not his pet. She was just his catfriend.
