Chapter 15 - CHAPTER 16:THE PALACE STARTS TO FEAR

The palace felt different the next morning.

Not visibly.

Not in a way anyone could point to.

But it was there.

In the way conversations stopped a second too late.

In the way footsteps slowed when she passed.

In the way eyes lingered… then quickly looked away.

Something had changed.

And no one could explain it.

But they felt it.

Seraphina walked through the corridor alone.

No guards.

No announcement.

Still

The space cleared for her.

Not out of respect.

But instinct.

A maid carrying linens froze as Seraphina approached, her grip tightening until the fabric nearly slipped from her hands.

Seraphina didn't stop.

Didn't acknowledge it.

But she noticed.

She noticed everything now.

The shift wasn't just around her.

It was within her.

The mark.

Even hidden beneath her sleeve

It pulsed.

Slow.

Steady.

Alive.

And with every pulse

Her awareness sharpened.

She could feel movement before it happened.

Tension before it spoke.

Fear before it showed.

It wasn't overwhelming.

It was… precise.

Controlled.

As if it had always belonged to her.

"Interesting."

The voice came from ahead this time.

Lysara.

Of course.

Seraphina didn't stop walking.

Lysara fell into step beside her effortlessly.

"I was wondering when I'd feel it again," she said lightly.

That made Seraphina turn slightly.

"Feel what?" she asked.

Lysara's smile was softer today.

Less sharp.

"Whatever you're hiding," she said.

A pause.

"It's louder now."

Seraphina held her gaze.

"And yet you're still standing close to me," she said.

Lysara's smile returned slower this time.

"I've never been afraid of things I don't understand," she replied.

Seraphina studied her.

"That's not bravery," she said.

"No," Lysara agreed.

"It's curiosity."

Silence stretched between them as they continued walking.

"You're different today," Lysara added.

"I've always been the same."

"No," Lysara said quietly.

"You've always had it."

Her eyes flicked briefly toward Seraphina's arm.

"You just didn't know."

Seraphina said nothing.

Because that

That was true.

They stepped into the open hall.

This time

More people were present.

Nobles.

Servants.

Guards.

And every single one of them

Felt it.

The moment Seraphina entered

The air shifted.

Subtly.

But undeniably.

A nobleman mid-conversation stopped speaking.

Another lowered his voice.

A guard adjusted his stance, his hand tightening slightly on his weapon.

Fear.

Not loud.

Not obvious.

But spreading.

Seraphina walked forward, her posture unchanged.

But inside

She understood.

This is what power felt like.

Not control.

Influence.

Presence.

The ability to change a room without saying a word.

And she hadn't even tried.

"Careful," Lysara murmured beside her.

Seraphina didn't look at her.

"Why?" she asked.

"Because they're noticing," Lysara said.

A pause.

"And once people notice something they can't explain…" she continued,

"They either worship it…"

Another pause.

"Or they try to destroy it."

Seraphina's lips curved slightly.

"Let them decide," she said.

Lysara glanced at her.

"They will," she replied.

"And when they do… you'll have to choose too."

Seraphina didn't respond.

Because she already had.

The doors at the far end of the hall opened.

The sound echoed sharply.

All movement stilled.

Lord Darius entered.

And this time—

He didn't look at anyone else first.

He looked at her.

Directly.

Carefully.

Measuring.

The room held its breath.

Because something was happening.

Something unspoken.

Seraphina met his gaze.

Unmoving.

And for the first time—

She didn't feel small under it.

She didn't feel like something being judged.

She felt like something being… evaluated.

Equal.

That alone was dangerous.

Darius stepped forward slowly.

The room remained silent.

His presence was still powerful.

Still commanding.

But something—

Something subtle—

Had shifted.

"Walk with me," he said.

Not a request.

Seraphina didn't hesitate.

She stepped forward.

Lysara didn't follow.

But her eyes did.

Watching.

Always watching.

The hall emptied behind them as Darius led Seraphina into a quieter corridor.

No guards this time.

No witnesses.

Just them.

"You've drawn attention," he said as they walked.

Seraphina didn't respond immediately.

"That tends to happen," she said calmly.

Darius glanced at her.

"You should be more careful."

A pause.

"Or less noticeable."

Seraphina's gaze stayed forward.

"Why?" she asked.

His steps slowed slightly.

"Because power," he said,

"is most effective when it isn't seen."

Seraphina finally looked at him.

"And yet," she replied,

"you've built an entire kingdom around being seen."

Silence.

Sharp.

Darius stopped walking.

Turned to face her fully.

For a moment—

Neither of them spoke.

Then—

His gaze dropped.

To her wrist.

Just briefly.

But it was enough.

He felt it.

He knew.

The air tightened.

"You should cover that," he said quietly.

Not anger.

Not command.

Something else.

Warning.

Seraphina didn't move.

"Why?" she asked again.

Darius held her gaze now.

Because if anyone else sees it…

"They will remember something they were meant to forget."

Her heart didn't race.

But her mind—

Sharp.

Fast.

"What was I meant to forget?" she asked.

A pause.

Longer this time.

Darius studied her.

Carefully.

Then

He stepped back.

"That," he said,

"is not something you're ready to know."

Seraphina's expression didn't change.

"But I will be," she replied.

Not a question.

A promise.

Darius held her gaze for a moment longer.

Then turned away.

"Be careful who sees you," he said as he walked off.

"Not everyone fears what you are."

A pause.

"Some will remember it."

And that..

That was worse.

Seraphina stood alone in the corridor.

The silence returned.

But it didn't feel empty anymore.

It felt… waiting.

She looked down at her wrist slowly.

The mark pulsed faintly beneath her skin.

Alive.Important.

Dangerous.

Her fingers brushed over it lightly.

"They remember…" she murmured.

Her gaze lifted.

Colder now.

Stronger.

"Then let them."

Because if they remembered

Then so would she.

And when she did

Nothing in this kingdom would remain the same
