Chapter 59 - THE ROAD BACK TO YOU

Michael had packed and unpacked his suitcase three times before finally admitting the truth to himself.

He was nervous.

Not courtroom nervous.

Not final-case-in-Ghana nervous.

Something far more personal.

His clothes were neatly folded on the bed. His graduation papers sat carefully inside his backpack. His passport rested beside his phone.

Everything was ready.

Yet he kept stopping.

A shirt would remind him of a memory.

A book would remind him of a conversation.

Even the silence in the room reminded him of all those nights he and Lucas had spent talking until one of them accidentally fell asleep during a video call.

Michael sat on the edge of the bed and stared at his suitcase.

Then smiled to himself.

"I'm not just traveling," he whispered.

His chest tightened warmly.

"I'm going home."

His phone rang.

Grace.

Michael answered immediately.

Her smiling face appeared.

"Well," she teased, "look at you. Traveling across continents for love."

Michael laughed.

"Grace."

"What?" she grinned. "Should I pretend this isn't romantic?"

Michael shook his head, still smiling.

Then his expression softened.

"Switch to video."

Grace frowned.

"I'm already on video."

Michael smiled.

"I mean with them. I want to see Mum and Dad."

Her face immediately softened.

Without another word, she turned the camera and walked quickly through the house.

Michael's chest began to tighten.

It had been too long.

Then—

his mother appeared.

For a second, neither of them spoke.

She simply stared.

Her eyes instantly filled with tears.

"My son," she whispered.

Michael smiled softly.

"Mum."

Suddenly her questions came all at once.

"Have you eaten?"

"Are you sleeping well?"

"Are you safe?"

"Why do you look thinner?"

Michael laughed.

"I'm fine."

She nodded, still emotional.

She clearly wanted to say more—perhaps about the case, about everything she had watched unfold—

but she didn't.

Her faith would not let her openly support what he had defended.

Yet her eyes gave her away.

She was proud.

Quietly.

Deeply.

Then his father appeared beside her.

As always—calm.

Reserved.

But his eyes softened the moment he saw Michael.

"You did well," his father said simply.

That was all.

But somehow—

It meant everything.

Michael swallowed hard.

"Thank you, sir."

Then he smiled suddenly.

"I have news."

Grace leaned closer immediately.

"What?"

"My graduation is in two weeks."

Silence.

Then—

Grace screamed.

A loud, joyful scream.

"Oh my God!"

She started jumping.

"We're coming!"

"Mum! Dad! We're going!"

His mother laughed.

His father nodded proudly.

"We'll be there."

Michael laughed harder than he had in days.

And all the while—

He kept one secret.

He still hadn't told Lucas.

He wanted to surprise him.

That thought alone made his smile grow.

Later that afternoon, Lina called.

The moment she saw his suitcase, she burst out laughing.

"You're really nervous."

"I'm not."

"You defended corrupt officials in court," she said, grinning. "But your hands are shaking because of your boyfriend."

Michael looked down.

His fingers were, indeed, shaking.

Lina laughed harder.

"Oh wow."

Michael covered his face.

"This is embarrassing."

"It's adorable."

He groaned.

She only laughed more.

Before leaving for the airport, Michael stopped at a luxury store.

He spent nearly twenty minutes choosing the perfect watch.

Classic.

Elegant.

Exactly Lucas.

Then he bought expensive designer shoes—Lucas' favorite brand.

The saleswoman smiled.

"Special occasion?"

Michael looked at the gifts and smiled softly.

"Yes."

Very special.

For once—

He wanted to spoil Lucas.

As Michael dragged his final suitcase out of his apartment, he nearly collided with Daniel in the hallway.

Daniel looked down at the luggage.

Then back at Michael.

Then down again.

His eyebrow lifted.

"Well," he said slowly, "this doesn't look like someone going to buy groceries."

Michael laughed.

"It's not."

Daniel folded his arms dramatically.

"Interesting. Because your graduation is in two weeks, and yet here you are—running away."

"I'm not running away."

Daniel pointed at the suitcase.

"That suitcase says otherwise."

Michael shook his head, smiling.

"I'm just going to meet someone."

Daniel's eyes narrowed mischievously.

"Aha."

Michael instantly regretted saying that.

Daniel leaned closer.

"Let me guess…"

Michael sighed.

"Daniel—"

"Mr. Lucas?"

Michael froze.

His face gave him away immediately.

Daniel gasped loudly.

"I knew it!"

"You knew what?" Michael asked too quickly.

Daniel laughed.

"I don't know exactly what it is…" he said, reaching for one of the suitcases, "but whatever is happening between you and that mysterious 'Lucas'—"

he made exaggerated air quotes—

"—it is definitely not an ordinary friendship."

Michael looked away.

A little too fast.

And Daniel noticed.

For a second, Michael's chest tightened.

A familiar fear rising quietly.

What if Daniel reacted badly?

What if—

But Daniel simply lifted the suitcase and started walking toward the car.

"No worries," he said lightly.

Michael blinked.

Daniel glanced back and smiled.

"You don't have to explain anything you're not ready to explain."

That made Michael stop walking.

Daniel's voice softened.

"Just know this—if that person makes you smile like this…"

he gestured toward Michael's face—

"…then I already approve."

Michael stared at him.

Relief hit hard.

Then Daniel ruined the emotional moment immediately.

"Though honestly," he added, grunting dramatically under the weight of the suitcase, "if this is love, why is it so heavy?"

Michael burst into laughter.

"Because I packed gifts."

Daniel's eyes widened.

"You packed gifts?"

Michael nodded.

Daniel placed the suitcase in the trunk and looked at him in mock disbelief.

"Oh wow."

"What?"

"You're deep in love."

Michael laughed harder.

"Stop."

Daniel shut the trunk dramatically.

"Too late. You've been diagnosed."

"With what?"

Daniel grinned.

"Terminal romance."

Michael laughed so loudly he had to lean against the car.

Daniel smiled, happy to see it.

Then he stepped forward and pulled Michael into a quick hug.

"Safe journey."

Michael nodded warmly.

"Thank you."

Daniel stepped back.

"And tell Mr. Lucas…"

Michael looked at him.

Daniel smirked.

"…he better deserve all this trouble."

Michael laughed once more, then got into the car.

As it pulled away, Daniel waved from the roadside.

Still smiling.

Because even without knowing the full truth—

he understood one thing clearly.

Michael was going to someone he loved.

At the airport, reality finally hit him.

Standing in the terminal, suitcase in hand, passport ready—

He suddenly remembered the last major trip he had taken.

That trip had changed everything.

It had taken him toward danger.

Toward purpose.

Toward becoming someone new.

But this trip—

this one—

was taking him toward love.

And somehow that felt even bigger.

Miles away, Lucas was absolutely losing his mind.

He checked the time.

Again.

Then again.

Then paced across the living room.

Grandma watched quietly from her chair, amused.

Jasail noticed first.

He tilted his little head.

"Why are you panicking?"

Lucas stopped.

Then bent down toward him with a gentle smile.

"I'm not panicking."

"You are."

Lucas laughed softly.

"It's just… someone very important is coming."

Jasail frowned.

"Who?"

Lucas smiled warmly.

"A beautiful surprise."

Jasail crossed his arms.

"That's not fair."

Lucas laughed and kissed his forehead.

"Just wait."

Grandma smiled from across the room.

She already knew exactly who was coming.

And she had never seen Lucas this restless.

Hours later, Michael sat by the airplane window.

The cabin lights were dim.

Most passengers were asleep.

But Michael couldn't sleep.

He stared out at the dark sky and let his thoughts drift.

Love was strange.

Years ago, he had tried to run from it.

Now—

he was crossing continents for it.

His lips curved softly.

Then his mind pulled him backward.

Back to seminary.

Back to that cold night.

The dormitory corridor had been nearly empty.

Michael had been avoiding Lucas for weeks.

Not because he hated him.

But because he was terrified.

Terrified that what he felt for Lucas would destroy everything.

His priestly dreams.

His future.

His faith.

So he had kept his distance.

Until that night.

Lucas had appeared unexpectedly.

Quietly.

Holding something in his hands.

A pair of warm socks.

Michael had blinked in confusion.

"What's this?"

Lucas smiled softly.

"It's cold."

Michael laughed.

"You came all this way for socks?"

Lucas shrugged.

"You accepted them."

Michael did.

And somehow—

that simple gesture broke the wall he had spent weeks building.

They walked silently through the seminary grounds afterward.

The cold air wrapped around them.

Their footsteps slow.

Neither speaking much.

Then they reached the big tree.

The one hidden enough to keep secrets.

They stopped beneath it.

The silence changed.

Michael remembered the way his heart had started pounding.

Lucas stepping closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Giving him time to walk away.

But Michael didn't.

He stayed.

And when Lucas kissed him—

everything changed.

It had been deep.

Slow.

Terrifying.

Beautiful.

Their first surrender.

Their first truth.

And when it ended—

Michael had instinctively pulled Lucas into a tight hug.

His body trembling.

Lucas had whispered softly into his ear—

"I've wanted to do that for so long."

Even now—

years later—

that memory still made Michael's chest ache.

Meanwhile, Lucas had one final surprise planned.

A family dinner.

Not grand.

Not public.

Just home.

Just: Lucas.

Michael.

Grandma.

Jasail.

A quiet table.

Warm food.

Love.

Because after all these years—

Lucas wanted Michael to feel what he had always wanted him to feel Family.

At the airport arrival terminal, Lucas stood frozen.

He was dressed neatly.

Too neatly.

Trying to look calm.

Failing badly.

Beside him, Jasail held a bouquet of beautiful flowers.

Though every thirty seconds he asked—

"Who are we waiting for?"

Lucas smiled nervously.

"A surprise."

"How long?"

Lucas checked the arrival board again.

Then the doors.

Then the clock.

"Not much longer."

Passengers began coming through.

One after another.

Lucas lifted his eyes—

and suddenly stopped breathing.

His entire body went still.

Because somewhere beyond those opening doors—

Michael was finally coming home.
