Chapter 11 - [11] : Good Work, Everyone

sry for the the late post

Kiana and Mei immediately huddled together, heads nearly touching as they pored over the script, exchanging hushed comments every now and then.

"This shot, the close-up where I jump off the rooftop to save Mei, needs a close-up!"

"Right, and my expression needs to show the fear first, then the resolve that comes after."

Bronya returned to her seat, opened a new software interface, and began mapping out a unified set of fonts, color palettes, and layout grids.

On Dan Heng's screen, a blank web design program had been opened alongside the code editor.

Stelle and March 7th had already gathered at one computer, with several browser tabs open, searching and taking notes.

Arthur, for his part, settled back into his chair and began refining the story outline for the later chapters along with more detailed gameplay design.

He needed to make sure that once the "comic" had drawn people in, he had a solid enough "game" at its core to follow through.

Outside the window, the sky shifted, the brightness of the afternoon slowly settling into a warm red, then gradually deepening into a cool blue-gray.

The light inside the office dimmed, leaving only the glow of computer screens casting patches of light and shadow across everyone's faces.

The clatter of keyboards, which had been rapid and relentless through the afternoon, grew sparse, then fell silent altogether.

The soft scratch of drawing styluses had stopped long before that.

"Haah..."

A long, drawn-out exhale, as though the very last reserves of energy had been spent, drifted over from Kiana's direction.

She had gone completely limp, sinking back into her chair as if every bone in her body had dissolved.

Her eyes were closed, her chest rising and falling in a slow, steady rhythm.

Mei, beside her, wasn't in much better shape.

Her posture still carried its usual poise, but the stiffness in her spine was unmistakable.

Fatigue was written plainly across her face, and the warmth that normally lit her eyes had dimmed to something quieter.

She was pressing her fingertips gently against her temples, and on the digital screen in front of her sat the finished "Prologue" comic pages, lines clean and crisp, base colors already laid in.

Bronya's corner of the room was equally quiet.

Her screen no longer showed any specific character or scene, but rather neatly arranged font samples, color swatches, and several versions of panel grid templates.

She sat with her head slightly bowed, her pale blue eyes fixed on the display, gaze slightly unfocused, the telltale look of mental exhaustion after hours of intensive work.

Dan Heng had taken off his glasses and was pinching the bridge of his nose. On his monitor, the code editor sat open on the left side, and on the right was a web page mockup, its basic framework already in place, clean and sharp in its minimalist aesthetic.

Across the office, at Stelle and March 7th's workstations...

Both of their computer screens were still on. One displayed what looked like a user data analytics chart from some gaming platform, and it was put together convincingly enough. The other showed a neatly organized comparison table of pros and cons for different promotional platforms. But the people sitting in front of those computers...

Stelle had collapsed forward onto the desk, face buried in the crook of her arm, apparently fast asleep, hair sticking up in all directions.

March 7th had slouched sideways in her chair, one hand still loosely curled around the mouse, eyes half-open, murmuring to herself in a daze: "Click-through rates... conversions... community engagement..."

Clearly, after completing the tasks Arthur had assigned them, these two had made full and enthusiastic use of their capacity for slacking off, and had managed, in doing so, to slack themselves straight into unconsciousness.

Kiana caught her breath for a few moments, then made the effort to sit upright and exchanged a look with Mei. Mei gave a small nod.

Only then did Kiana turn toward Arthur, who had been at his own desk all afternoon, battling the same screen and notebook they all had. Her voice carried the obvious weight of exhaustion, along with a small measure of relief at having finished: "Captain... here, mine and Mei's 'homework'... it's done. Take a look."

She sent the completed first-issue comic pages, hers and Mei's together, over to Arthur's computer.

Mei spoke up as well, her voice soft: "Arthur, this is based on your script and the panel suggestions you gave us. We did our best to capture the emotion and movement in the key scenes. Let us know if anything needs to be changed."

Her tone was as gentle as ever, but the tiredness underneath it was audible.

Bronya quietly forwarded her completed visual style guide and the panel grid templates.

Dan Heng said nothing, simply sending Arthur the link to the web mockup and its local file path.

Stelle and March 7th... made no move for the moment.

Arthur drew a slow breath and set aside the brainstorming he had been doing on the later chapters and gameplay systems.

He opened the files he'd received.

His first reaction was one of genuine surprise.

The comic pages Kiana and Mei had produced together were remarkably polished. The linework was fluid and full of energy, capturing Kiana's athleticism and fierce resolve, the flash of terror in Mei's eyes as she looked up, that faint, fragile glimmer of hope underneath it. The burning Senba Academy, the shattering glass... the images hit hard.

Mei's delicate touch had filled in what Kiana's sometimes exuberant style left open, bringing detail and elegance to the dynamism of the scenes without losing any of the momentum.

Bronya's color recommendations had been carried through beautifully as well. The pacing of the panels was tight, the emotional build well-executed. In every respect, the work exceeded what he had expected from a rapid first pass.

Dan Heng's web framework was spare, but the layout was clear and left plenty of room for expansion. The cool, understated technological quality of it fit the Honkai setting in a way he hadn't anticipated.

Bronya's visual style guide, meanwhile, gave everything that followed a clear and consistent direction to work from.

The report from Stelle and March 7th... he skimmed it. It was thorough. The platform analysis was well-reasoned and detailed. They had even included a few smaller, more niche creative communities they felt would be ideal for an initial release, places with the right kind of atmosphere.

A wave of feeling rose in his chest, something that mixed pride and warmth with a quiet edge of guilt.

He knew they had all given everything they had.

"Good."

Arthur's voice came out a little rough. He cleared his throat. "Really good. Better than I expected. Kiana, Mei, the energy in those panels and the emotional work are exactly right. Bronya, the visual direction is solid. Dan Heng, the framework works, we'll go with it for now. Stelle and March 7th's report... that's useful too."

He paused, taking in the tired faces around him: "That's enough for today. You all worked hard. Thank you."
