Chapter 24 - First Steps

Time passed.

Not long.

But enough.

The wounds closed first.

The emotional ones took longer.

Aric stood at the edge of the settlement, his arm moving freely again as he tightened his grip around the training spear. The wood felt more familiar now. Still light. Still not made for real combat.

But usable.

Better than before.

He moved it once.

Twice.

A simple thrust.

Cleaner than it had been days ago.

His body had recovered.

Fully.

The stiffness was gone. The pain had faded. The burn on his hand had healed.

Only one thing remained.

A thin scar along his side.

A reminder.

Nothing more.

His body responded without resistance now.

No hesitation.

No weakness.

Only memory remained.

He exhaled slowly.

The forest stretched out beyond the village, unchanged.

The same trees.

The same silence.

The same unknown.

Behind him, the village moved again.

Not like before.

Quieter.

More controlled.

Work had resumed. Tools carried. Structures maintained. Life continued.

But something was missing.

Aric felt it every time he walked through the settlement.

Spaces that should have been filled—weren't.

Voices that should have been there—were gone.

Luma.

Varok.

The absence didn't fade.

It settled.

Aric lowered the spear slightly.

His gaze drifted toward the forest again.

Then stilled.

"…There have to be more."

The thought had come to him more than once.

Now—

it stayed.

Humans.

Gone.

That's what Korran had said.

Final.

Certain.

But it didn't make sense.

Not completely.

A world this large—

this alive—

couldn't hold just one.

Couldn't end like that.

Not without reason.

Not without something behind it.

Aric's grip tightened.

"I need to know."

The words were quiet.

But they didn't waver.

That was it.

Not survival.

Not wandering.

A direction.

Find humans.

Find out what happened.

And if there were none—

understand why.

He turned.

The decision settled easily.

Too easily.

He noticed it.

After everything—

it should have been harder.

But it wasn't.

Like it had already been made before he said it out loud.

The Elder's home stood where it always had.

Unchanged.

Solid.

Aric stepped inside without hesitation.

Korran stood at the center, as before.

Waiting.

Or maybe just always there.

Aric stopped a few steps in.

"I'm leaving," he said.

No build-up.

No hesitation.

Korran studied him for a moment.

Then nodded once.

"You walk your path."

Simple.

Final.

Aric inclined his head slightly.

"…Thank you."

No more needed to be said.

Dren was near the training grounds.

His hammer rested against his shoulder as he oversaw a small group working through basic movements. His presence was different now.

Heavier.

More central.

When he saw Aric approach, he dismissed the others with a small motion.

"You're moving better," Dren said.

"I am."

A short pause.

"I'm leaving."

Dren didn't react immediately.

Then—

a nod.

"Good."

Not dismissive.

Not uncaring.

Just honest.

"You don't belong here."

Aric let out a quiet breath.

"…Probably not."

Dren's gaze shifted toward the forest.

"Then go where you do."

That was all.

Sira stood near the edge of the settlement.

Alone.

Her bow was in her hands, but she wasn't drawing it. Just adjusting the string. Checking it.

Again.

And again.

Aric approached slowly.

She didn't look up immediately.

"I'm leaving," he said.

Her hands stilled.

Then resumed.

"…I thought you would."

Aric hesitated.

"I'm going to look for humans."

That made her stop.

She looked at him then.

Really looked.

A long moment passed.

Then—

a small nod.

"Then find them."

No doubt.

No question.

Just acceptance.

Aric nodded once in return.

Keth was easier to find.

He was sitting on one of the outer structures, one leg hanging off the side, the other bent, a strip of cloth loosely wrapped around his arm.

"You look less like you're about to die," Keth said as Aric approached.

"Improvement."

Keth smirked faintly.

"Low bar."

A pause.

Aric leaned slightly against the structure.

"I'm leaving."

Keth exhaled through his nose.

"Figured."

No surprise.

No resistance.

"Try not to die out there," he added after a second.

Aric almost smiled.

"I'll try."

Reth was already watching him.

Of course he was.

Aric found him near the edge of the trees, just inside the forest line. Still. Quiet.

"I'm leaving," Aric said.

Reth held his gaze.

Then nodded once.

Nothing more.

That was enough.

Aric stepped back into the center of the settlement.

Something felt… incomplete.

He already knew what it was.

"…Where's Brenok?" he asked.

Dren was the closest.

He didn't look at him.

"You'll find him."

Aric frowned slightly.

He turned to Sira.

"Have you seen Brenok?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"You'll find him."

Keth just snorted lightly.

"Yeah."

Aric's gaze shifted to Reth.

The scout didn't even wait for the question.

"You'll find him."

That was enough to make it clear.

They knew.

All of them.

And none of them were going to say more.

Aric searched anyway.

Training grounds.

Empty.

The river.

Still.

The outer paths.

Nothing.

Everywhere Brenok should have been—

he wasn't.

After a while, Aric stopped looking.

Not because he didn't care.

Because he understood.

Aric had the feeling he wasn't being kept from Brenok.

Just… guided.

The path leading out of the village stretched ahead.

The same one they had taken before.

Different now.

Aric stepped toward it.

One step.

Then another.

The village behind him felt quieter with each movement forward.

He reached the edge.

Stopped.

Brenok stood there.

His shoulder bare beneath torn cloth.

A scar cut across it—deep, clean.

He didn't hide it.

Didn't acknowledge it.

He just stood.

Aric exhaled slowly.

"You knew I was leaving."

Brenok didn't move.

"Yes."

Of course.

Aric glanced at him briefly.

Then back toward the forest.

A pause.

Then—

"I couldn't find you."

"You weren't meant to."

Simple.

Direct.

Aric nodded slightly.

That made sense.

A moment passed between them.

Then—

"I'm coming with you."

Aric looked at him fully now.

No hesitation in Brenok's stance.

No uncertainty.

Just a decision.

Already made.

"…Why?"

The question came naturally.

Brenok's gaze didn't shift.

"There's nothing here for me now."

A pause.

Not empty.

Just… real.

"And I'm not done."

That was it.

No long explanation.

No mention of Luma.

But she was there.

In the words.

In the silence between them.

Aric held his gaze for a second longer.

Then—

"…Alright."

No argument.

No doubt.

Brenok turned first.

Stepped onto the path.

Aric followed.

The village stayed behind them.

The structures.

The people.

The place where everything had changed.

Neither of them looked back.

The forest stretched out ahead.

Wide.

Unknown.

Unforgiving.

Aric adjusted his grip on the spear.

Brenok walked beside him.

Steady.

Silent.

And together—

they moved forward.

Behind them—

something closed.

Not the path.

Not the world.

But a part of it.
