The heavy rhythmic thud of military-grade helicopters beat against the reinforced glass of the CFO's office. Outside, the sky over Apex Academy was no longer the clear, twilight blue of a peaceful campus. It was choked with the black silhouettes of dropships and the shimmering kinetic shields of an S-Rank Strike Team.
Marcus Von Heist, the CEO of the world's largest Hero Agency, wasn't coming for a discussion. He was coming for a reclamation.
Kaelen Thorne stood by the window, adjusting his cufflinks with the detached precision of a man preparing for a light afternoon tea rather than a siege. Behind him, Arthur Pendel the former "King of Strength" was slumped in a chair, his massive frame twitching. Golden translucent wires, thin as spider silk but glowing with the heat of a furnace, pulsed from his neck into the Academy's floorboards.
"You... you're insane," Arthur rasped, his eyes bloodshot. "You're siphoning the Academy's entire emergency reserve into my mana-circuits. My veins... they feel like they're filled with liquid glass."
"Correct," Kaelen said, not turning around. "The human body is a flawed vessel, Arthur. It has safety limiters to prevent burnout. But as your current 'Owner,' I find those limiters to be an inefficient use of resources. I've overridden your biological dampeners. For the next two hours, you aren't a student. You are a High-Output Mana Battery with a sword attached to it."

[TARGET: DEBTOR ARTHUR PENDEL]
[EFFECT: STRENGTH +300%, AGILITY +200%, MANA OUTPUT +500%.]
[WARNING: TARGET'S VITALITY IS DEPLEATING AT A RATE OF 1% PER MINUTE.]
"If you don't clear the Gate of Gehenna before your vitality hits zero," Kaelen added, finally turning to look at the trembling giant, "I'll simply write you off as a tax loss. So, I suggest you move quickly."
"Thorne! Come out and face your judgment!"
The voice boomed through the Academy's PA system, amplified by S-Rank sonic magic. Marcus Von Heist had landed.
Kaelen tapped his ear, activating the internal comms. "Commander Ironclad. Are the 'Asset Holders' in position?"
"They are," Ironclad's voice came back, tight with suppressed dread. "The Rank-F and Rank-E students are standing at the main gate. But Thorne... they're terrified. Marcus has three S-Rank hunters with him. They'll slaughter the kids."
"They won't touch them," Kaelen said, stepping toward the door. "Because every 'kid' at that gate is currently a protected asset under a Divine Contract. Marcus might be a CEO, but he hasn't yet learned how to litigate against Heaven."
The main plaza of Apex Academy was a scene of surreal tension. On one side stood the "Liberation Force" fifty armored hunters led by Marcus Von Heist. Marcus looked like a titan in his 'Solaris' power-armor, a suit worth more than most small countries, glowing with the heat of a miniature sun.
On the other side stood the "Trash."
Two hundred Rank-F students, many still wearing their bruised and battered uniforms from the previous day, stood in a ragged line. They were shaking, their knees knocking together as they faced the most powerful men on the planet.
Marcus stepped forward, his heavy boots cracking the pavement. "Move aside, children. I am here to remove the parasite that has infected this school. Where is Kaelen Thorne?"
None of the students moved. Not because they were brave, but because they could feel the golden chains around their ankles, anchored deep into the soil of the Academy.
"He's right here, Marcus."
The crowd parted. Kaelen Thorne walked through the middle of the Rank-F students. He looked small, fragile, and utterly outclassed by the towering hunters in front of him. But as he walked, the [Divine Auditor's Mark] on his forehead glowed with a faint, chilling white light.
Marcus let out a guttural laugh. "You? You are the one who declared my son a 'distressed asset'? You are the one who bankrupted the most prestigious academy in the world? You look like a clerk who got lost on his way to the library."
"A clerk is exactly what I am," Kaelen replied, stopping five paces from the S-Rank CEO. "And I've been reviewing your company's books, Marcus. You've been over-leveraged for years. You've been using 'Future Hero' projections to secure loans from the World Bank that you can't possibly repay if those heroes fail. And today... they are failing."
"Enough of this nonsense!" Marcus raised his gauntlet, the air around him beginning to shimmer with thermal energy. "I am seizing this Academy under the National Security Act. Any student who stays behind this boy will be labeled a traitor to the Association."
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," Kaelen said, pulling a single, golden scroll from his pocket.
[SKILL ACTIVATED: SOVEREIGN'S EDICT – 'THE INDEMNITY CLAUSE']
"By entering these grounds with hostile intent while the Academy is under 'Divine Audit,' you have triggered an automatic Insurance Claim," Kaelen explained. "According to the Charter I signed with Archangel Michael two hours ago... any damage you do to these students must be paid for, in full, using your personal mana-pool and the assets of the Von Heist Corporation."
"You think a piece of paper can stop an S-Rank Hunter?" Marcus sneered. He snapped his fingers. "Unit One. Clear the path. Non-lethal, but make it hurt."
The lead hunter, a lithe woman with twin daggers, blurred. She moved faster than the human eye could follow, aiming a kick at a small Rank-F girl in the front row.
CRACK.
The hunter didn't hit the girl. Instead, a massive, golden barrier shaped like a ledger page materialized an inch from the girl's face. The force of the hunter's own blow was reflected back with 200% efficiency.
The hunter's leg shattered instantly. She screamed, collapsing to the ground as a red notification appeared above her head.

[LIQUIDATION INITIATED: 10 LEVELS SEIZED FROM AGGRESSOR.]
[RECIPIENT: STUDENT #4492 (THE TARGET).]
The Rank-F girl, who had been crying a moment ago, suddenly gasped. Her body surged with power. Her Rank-F status flickered and turned into Rank-C in a matter of seconds.
"What... what did you do?" Marcus roared, stepping back.
"I didn't do anything," Kaelen said, his eyes cold and mocking. "The System did. You just 'donated' ten levels to a scholarship student, Marcus. Thank you for your generosity. Does Unit Two want to make a donation as well?"
The hunters hesitated. For the first time in their lives, their strength was a liability. To attack was to lose. To fight was to be looted.
"This is a trick! A digital illusion!" Marcus charged his Solaris cannon. "I'll level the whole building!"
"If you fire that," Kaelen said, "the Divine Audit will conclude that the Von Heist Corporation is a 'Total Loss.' The Archangel Michael will not come for your son, Marcus. He will come for your lineage. Do you really want to bet your soul on whether or not I'm bluffing?"
Marcus froze. The Solaris cannon hummed, its golden light illuminating the cold, dead eyes of Kaelen Thorne. In that moment, the CEO realized he wasn't looking at a student. He was looking at a predator who had spent a lifetime learning how to skin men like him.
Just then, the ground began to shake. Not a tremor, but a rhythmic, tectonic throb.
From the north, toward the city center, a pillar of black, oily smoke erupted into the sky. The air grew cold, and a sound like a thousand screaming souls tore through the atmosphere.
The Gate of Gehenna had opened.
"It's here," Kaelen whispered, looking at his watch. "Three minutes early. How's Arthur doing?"

[ASSET UPDATE: ARTHUR PENDEL HAS REACHED THE GATE.]
[CURRENT COMBAT POWER: S-RANK (LIMIT-BROKEN).]
On a massive holographic screen above the Academy, a live feed appeared. It showed Arthur Pendel muscles bulging, eyes glowing with a terrifying, berserk light standing alone in front of the massive, obsidian Gate.
Thousands of demons were pouring out, a tide of nightmare flesh and rusted iron.
In his previous life, this was a massacre. Today, it was a harvest.
Arthur let out a roar that was picked up by the cameras. He swung his sword, and a wave of pure, siphoned Academy mana obliterated the first three rows of demons in a single strike.
"Look at that, Marcus," Kaelen said, gesturing to the screen. "That's my employee. He's clearing a Red-Tier Gate by himself. While you're standing here, trying to bully children, the 'trash' of the Academy is doing your job."
"He's going to die," Marcus siphoned. "No one can handle that much mana. He'll burn out."
"Then his death will be the most profitable event of the fiscal year," Kaelen replied. "Because as he dies, the 'Hero' status of the Von Heist Corporation will plummet to zero. The public is watching this live, Marcus. They see one boy from Apex doing what your entire Strike Team is too afraid to do."
Kaelen stepped closer to Marcus, his voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper.
"The Gate is open. Three million lives are at stake. I have the only 'tool' capable of closing it. But Arthur is tired. He needs support. He needs... an S-Rank Strike Team to act as his squires."
Marcus looked at the screen, then at the Rank-F students, then at the cold boy in the suit. He realized the trap was absolute. If he didn't help, he was a coward who let millions die. If he did help, he was working for Kaelen Thorne.
"What do you want?" Marcus spat.
Kaelen pulled out a digital contract.
"The Von Heist Corporation becomes a subsidiary of Apex Academy. You provide the muscle; I provide the strategy. You get to keep your title, but I keep your soul."

[CONTRACT OFFERED: THE SUBSIDIARY OF SOULS]
[REWARD: SURVIVAL OF SEOUL / 50,000 IP.]
[PENALTY FOR REFUSAL: TOTAL BANKRUPTCY.]
Marcus Von Heist, the most powerful man in the Hero Association, looked at the contract. He looked at Kaelen Thorne. And for the first time in his life, he felt the weight of a debt he could never repay.
With a trembling hand, Marcus pressed his biometric seal to the screen.
[CONTRACT SIGNED.]
[NEW ASSET ACQUIRED: THE VON HEIST CORPORATION.]
"Now," Kaelen said, turning to the S-Rank Strike Team. "Go. Save the city. And try not to get blood on your uniforms. I'm planning on selling them at a premium later."
As the helicopters roared back into the sky, heading toward the Gate, Kaelen stood alone in the plaza. The Rank-F students were cheering, crying, and hugging each other. They thought they had been saved.
Kaelen didn't smile. He looked at his status window.

"You've bought the Light, Architect. But the Dark is currently holding a meeting about your 'Hostile Takeover.' See you at the end of the month."

"Mariana," he said into his comms. "Cancel my afternoon meetings. I need to start drafting the layoff notices for the Gods."
