Chapter 32 - THE PENSION FUND OF THE ABYSS

The Sea of Grief did not ripple like water.

It pulsed like a bruised lung.

Kaelen Thorne stood on the surface of the black liquid his polished leather shoes leaving golden rings on the ink.

The air was thick with the scent of old iron and the salt of a trillion tears.

This was not just a place of darkness.

It was the Universal Trash Bin for every failed emotion and every broken promise in history.

Behind him Silas Vesper and Lia Sinclair were struggling to stay upright.

The weight of the collective sorrow was so heavy that it felt like a physical pressure on their skulls.

Lia's violet aura was being swallowed by the blackness her light flickering like a candle in a hurricane.

The Shadow Monarch sat atop her throne of skulls.

Her eyes were not obsidian or violet anymore.

They were two mirrors reflecting the moment Kaelen had died in the rain.

You look surprised Kaelen she whispered her voice resonating through the liquid beneath his feet.

Did you think the System was a new invention?

Did you think your regression was a unique event?

The Monarch held up the contract.

The parchment was made of human skin and the ink was still wet as if it had been signed seconds ago.

But the date at the top was ten thousand years old.

This is your Severance Package Kaelen she said.

From the first time you were the Architect.

Kaelen Thorne felt a cold jolt in his chest.

The Alpha Heart he had just merged with began to thrum with a frantic energy.

Images he didn't recognize began to flood his mind.

White laboratories.

The first line of code for the System.

And the woman who had stood beside him as he wrote the laws of the universe.

You were my Chief of Staff Kaelen whispered his eyes turning a blinding obsidian.

The Shadow Monarch smiled and the skulls beneath her shifted with a hollow clatter.

I was your partner.

And when the first world defaulted we signed this agreement.

In exchange for my silence you gave me the Ownership of the Dark.

But you also promised me a 'Golden Parachute' if the System ever reached a state of total collapse.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

[HIDDEN LEGACY DETECTED: THE FOUNDER'S CONTRACT]

[OFFER: ACTIVATE THE SEVERANCE PACKAGE]

[REWARD: REGAIN THE MANA OF THE ORIGINAL CREATOR]

[COST: TOTAL DELETION OF EARTH 01 TO RESET THE SERVER]

Kaelen looked at the contract.

It was a tempting out.

If he signed he would become a god again.

He could walk away from the war with Vane.

He could leave the students and the debt behind and start over in a new reality with the Monarch by his side.

Vane's World-Cracker ship suddenly tore through the sky of the Abyss.

The massive continent sized vessel began to descend into the black sea.

Vane stood on the bow his eyes glowing with the white fire of the World Hero Association.

I see you Kaelen! Vane's voice boomed through the darkness.

You've run to the basement to hide!

But I've already bought the Lien on the Shadows!

The High Council has authorized me to foreclose on the Abyss itself!

Vane slammed his staff into the black sea.

A wave of white holy fire began to spread across the liquid turning the grief into steam.

He was trying to 'Sanitize' the Abyss to make it profitable for the Heavens.

You see? the Shadow Monarch said reaching her hand toward Kaelen.

The Hero is coming to turn the dark into a theme park for the Gods.

Sign the package Kaelen.

Take the mana and let the server reset.

It is the only logical move for an Accountant.

Kaelen looked at the white fire of Vane and then at the black ink of the Monarch.

He looked at Lia Sinclair who was currently holding her head in pain.

He realized that both Vane and the Monarch were offering him the same thing: Escape.

But an Accountant does not run from a deficit Kaelen said his voice a low lethal hum.

An Accountant Restructures.

Kaelen stepped away from the Monarch's hand and walked toward the center of the Sea of Grief.

He didn't open the contract.

Instead he opened his Sovereign Ledger.

You call this a 'Severance Package' Monarch Kaelen said.

But I call it a Pension Fund.

The Monarch's smile faltered. A pension fund?

Ten thousand years of grief Kaelen said gesturing to the sea.

Trillions of souls who died without receiving their promised dividends.

This sea isn't just trash.

It is the Unpaid Social Security of the Multiverse.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: CHRONOLOGICAL DOUBLE-ENTRY]

[NOTICE: RECLASSIFYING THE ABYSS AS A 'RESTRICTED RETIREMENT FUND']

Vane! Kaelen shouted looking up at the World-Cracker ship.

You claimed to represent the dead!

You claimed you wanted back-pay for the souls of the first timeline!

But here is the truth Vane.

You are trying to foreclose on their pension!

The white fire of Vane's staff hit the black sea but it didn't turn to steam this time.

Instead the black liquid turned into a billion reaching hands.

The souls of the dead were not crying anymore.

They were Demanding a Payout.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

[GLOBAL AUDIT: THE PENSIONERS' REVOLT]

[VANE'S STANDING WITH THE DEAD HAS DROPPED TO: TOTAL ANTAGONIST]

In an instant the white wires connecting the students on Earth to Vane's ship began to snap.

The students could feel the grief of the Abyss flowing through the Ledger.

They realized that Vane was not buying their debt.

He was 'Looting the Fund' to pay for his own glory.

Vane let out a scream of rage as his continental ship began to tilt.

The black sea was pulling the vessel down into the depths.

Kaelen Thorne! Vane roared his face twisted in a mask of white light.

You would drown the world in its own sorrow just to beat me?

I'm not drowning the world Vane Kaelen said his eyes erupting in a terrifying obsidian light.

I'm giving the shareholders their Voted Rights.

Kaelen turned to the Shadow Monarch.

Her throne of skulls was starting to dissolve into the sea.

She looked at Kaelen with eyes of pure shock.

You've ruined it Kaelen she whispered.

You've given the dead a voice.

They will eat us both!

They won't eat me Kaelen said as he stepped onto the crumbling throne.

Because I've just appointed myself the Fund Manager.

[LEVEL UP]

[LEVEL: 60]

[CLASS EVOLUTION: THE VOID TRUSTEE]

[NEW POWER: EQUITY OF THE FALLEN]

Kaelen raised his hand and the black sea began to rise into a massive pillar behind him.

He wasn't using mana.

He was using the Collective Liability of History.

Vane Kaelen said his voice sounding like a thousand machines.

Your Hero Agency has just been declared Socially Irresponsible.

The World Hero Association is now under a Liquidation Order.

Kaelen pointed his finger at the World-Cracker ship.

Lia. Silas.

Collect the first payment.
