Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 : The Choice to Leave

The silence after the incident did not fade.

It settled.

No one spoke of the man who vanished.

No one questioned what they had seen.

Because deep down—

They already knew the answer.

The palace was no longer safe.

Aditya Varma stood alone in the inner hall.

The same place where he had once been confined.

Now—

No guards stood outside.

No one watched him.

Because no one wanted to be near him anymore.

"…this is where it ends."

The words were quiet.

Not dramatic.

Not emotional.

Just a conclusion.

The Witness stood by the pillar.

Watching him.

"You're leaving."

Not a question.

Aditya nodded once.

"…if I stay, it gets worse."

"Yes."

"…if I leave?"

A pause.

The Witness looked at him carefully.

"It will still get worse."

Silence.

Aditya almost smiled.

"…then at least it won't be here."

The king did not summon him.

So Aditya went to him.

The throne room was empty.

No court.

No ministers.

Only a father…

And a son.

The king stood by the window.

Looking out over the kingdom.

He didn't turn when Aditya entered.

"…you've made your decision."

Aditya stopped a few steps behind him.

"Yes."

A long silence followed.

"…you're abandoning your responsibility."

The words were sharp.

But not cruel.

Aditya's voice remained steady.

"…I am protecting it."

The king turned slowly.

"…by leaving it to collapse?"

Aditya met his gaze.

"…by removing the cause."

Silence.

The king studied him.

Longer than before.

"…and what if you're wrong?"

Aditya didn't hesitate.

"…then everything ends faster."

The honesty hit harder than any lie could have.

For the first time—

The king's expression broke.

Not completely.

But enough.

"…you're still my son."

Aditya said nothing.

"…whatever this is…"

The king continued,

"…whatever you've become…"

A pause.

"…you were not meant to carry it alone."

That—

For the first time—

Made Aditya hesitate.

Just for a moment.

"…I know."

His voice was quieter now.

"But I always have."

There was no ceremony.

No farewell gathering.

No announcement.

Just a gate.

Opening.

And a single figure walking through it.

Aditya Varma left the kingdom—

Alone.

The soldiers who once followed him did not accompany him.

The people who once admired him did not watch him.

Because the kingdom had already begun to forget him.

Not intentionally.

But gradually.

As if something in reality itself—

Was erasing his presence.

Halfway down the road—

A traveler passed him.

They glanced at him briefly.

Then continued walking.

Moments later—

They stopped.

Turned back.

"…have we met?"

Aditya didn't respond.

The traveler frowned.

"…no… I must be mistaken."

They walked away.

And just like that—

The connection was gone.

The Witness walked beside him once more.

"It's starting."

Aditya didn't ask what he meant.

"…I know."

A pause.

"…I'm being removed."

"Yes."

Silence.

"…faster than before."

"Yes."

Aditya looked ahead.

Toward a world that no longer fully recognized him.

Toward a path that would only grow darker.

And for the first time—

He did not walk as a prince.

Not as a warrior.

Not even as a man bound by fate.

But as something far more dangerous.

A contradiction the universe had begun to erase.

And yet—

Still moving forward.
