Chapter 128 - Chapter 128 : Beneath the Quiet Stars

Night settled completely over the forest not long after their conversations ended.

The fire near the river had burned lower now, reduced to glowing embers that pulsed softly beneath drifting ash while cold wind moved quietly through the trees overhead. The distant sounds of the forest grew calmer as midnight approached. Water continued flowing through the nearby river in steady rhythm while moonlight spilled silver across the clearing surrounding their camp.

The world had become still again.

Not empty.

Peaceful.

And after everything they survived beneath the mountain, that peace felt strangely fragile. Like something temporary both beautiful and dangerous at the same time.

One by one the others eventually settled near the campfire beneath blankets and cloaks, pretending to drift toward sleep while exhaustion from the journey finally caught up to them.

Or at least—

that was what Arin assumed.

In reality, none of them were actually asleep yet.

Not after everything that happened tonight.

Not after watching Liora remember pieces of Mira so vividly that even the atmosphere around the camp itself had changed.

The group understood something now that none of them fully understood before:

Whatever existed between Arin and Liora went beyond ordinary feelings.

It wasn't simply attraction.

Or closeness.

Or even love in the simple sense of the word.

It was something carried across lifetimes.

And somehow, witnessing that firsthand left all of them strangely quiet afterward.

Eventually only two people remained awake beside the fading fire.

Arin sat near the riverbank while staring absently toward the water reflecting moonlight between the trees. The fragments of Vijaya rested nearby wrapped carefully beneath cloth, though even hidden away the weapon still emitted faint golden pulses every few minutes.

Liora slowly walked toward him afterward.

Neither of them spoke immediately.

They didn't need to.

Too much already existed between them tonight for silence to feel uncomfortable anymore.

Arin noticed her stop quietly beside him before shifting slightly to make room.

Liora hesitated for only a second afterward before sitting beside him near the edge of the riverbank. The cold air moved softly through her hair while the sound of flowing water filled the quiet space around them.

For several long moments neither said anything.

The calmness itself felt enough.

Then eventually Liora spoke softly while staring toward the river.

"…it still feels strange."

Arin glanced toward her quietly.

"What does?"

She thought carefully before answering.

"…remembering someone I used to be."

The honesty in her voice carried uncertainty beneath it.

"Sometimes it feels real."

Another pause.

"And other times…"

Her gaze lowered slightly.

"…it feels like I'm stealing someone else's memories."

Arin remained silent briefly afterward.

Because he understood that feeling better than anyone.

When Karna's memories first surfaced inside him, he spent weeks questioning whether they truly belonged to him or whether he was simply losing himself slowly beneath fragments of another person's life.

Only later did he finally realize the truth.

The memories weren't replacing him.

They were part of him already.

Arin quietly answered afterward,

"I used to think that too."

Liora looked toward him.

"But after enough memories return…"

He stared toward the river thoughtfully.

"…you stop feeling separated from them."

Another pause.

"They become part of you naturally."

Liora listened quietly while moonlight reflected softly in her eyes.

"…does that ever stop being terrifying?"

This time Arin actually laughed softly beneath his breath.

The sound surprised even him slightly.

"…not really."

Liora smiled faintly afterward.

A small smile.

But real.

The sight of it softened something inside Arin immediately.

Because after the mountain… after the memories… after all the pain hidden inside both of them tonight…

Seeing her smile still felt enough to quiet the chaos inside his mind.

The realization unsettled him slightly.

Not because it was unwelcome.

Because it felt familiar.

Dangerously familiar.

Liora slowly leaned back afterward, resting one hand against the ground while staring upward through the trees toward the night sky barely visible between the branches overhead.

"…you know…"

Her voice softened quietly.

"I think part of me always remembered you."

Arin's chest tightened slightly afterward.

She continued without looking at him.

"Even before the dreams started."

Another pause.

"When we first met again in this life…"

A faint smile touched her lips briefly.

"…it never really felt like meeting a stranger."

The words lingered quietly between them.

Arin looked toward her for several seconds afterward before finally speaking softly himself.

"…same."

The honesty behind the answer made her glance toward him immediately.

Arin rarely admitted things so openly.

Especially emotions.

But tonight felt different somehow.

Maybe because too many truths already stood exposed between them now to keep pretending otherwise.

The wind shifted softly across the clearing afterward while silence settled again.

Then slowly—

Liora moved closer.

Carefully. Quietly.

Like she wasn't fully thinking about it consciously.

Arin felt her lean gently against him afterward.

Not dramatic.

Not sudden.

Natural.

His body tensed slightly for only a second before relaxing again almost immediately.

Because somehow this didn't feel unfamiliar either.

It felt remembered.

Liora rested quietly beside him while listening to the steady sound of his heartbeat beneath the silence surrounding them.

And unexpectedly—

that alone calmed her more than anything else tonight.

Not because of romance.

Because some deep part of her soul recognized the sound instinctively.

Like returning somewhere safe after being lost too long.

Arin slowly lifted one arm afterward before resting it gently across her shoulders.

Careful. Hesitant.

As though part of him still feared this moment might disappear if he moved too suddenly.

But Liora only relaxed closer against him afterward.

Neither of them spoke for a while after that.

The river flowed quietly nearby while the fire dimmed lower behind them.

And hidden beneath blankets several meters away—

the rest of the group remained very much awake.

Riven slowly cracked one eye open toward the others before whispering quietly,

"…I knew it."

Selene immediately elbowed him without looking.

"Shut up."

"But look at them."

"We can already see them."

Kael sighed softly beneath his blanket afterward.

"They finally get one peaceful moment and you're narrating it like a storyteller."

"I'm emotionally invested now."

Aira quietly buried her face against her cloak to hide laughter while Darin silently shook his head beside her.

Meanwhile, completely unaware of the ongoing silent reactions behind them, Arin and Liora remained near the river beneath the stars.

Eventually Liora shifted slightly again until she rested more comfortably against him.

Then slowly—

without really thinking about it—

she moved fully into his lap.

The motion caught Arin completely off guard for half a second.

Liora settled quietly afterward, resting sideways against him with her head leaning gently against his chest while one arm loosely wrapped near his side.

And somehow—

despite how close they suddenly were—

neither of them felt awkward about it.

Only calm.

Arin's heartbeat quickened slightly beneath her ear anyway.

Liora immediately noticed.

A faint smile appeared on her face afterward.

"…you're nervous."

Arin looked down toward her with visible betrayal in his expression.

"…you can hear that?"

"Very clearly."

"That's unfortunate."

This time she laughed softly.

The sound alone made something warm settle quietly inside his chest.

Arin slowly rested his chin lightly against the top of her head afterward while his arm remained around her shoulders naturally now.

The closeness felt dangerously comfortable.

Like something both of them could get used to far too easily.

Liora closed her eyes briefly afterward while listening quietly to the rhythm of his breathing.

"…this feels familiar too."

Arin's fingers tightened slightly against her shoulder afterward.

Because for him—

it did too.

Fragments surfaced softly within his memory again.

Mira asleep against him during long nights traveling between ruined cities.

The warmth of her hands beneath cold rain.

The quiet moments between battles that somehow mattered more than victory itself.

But strangely enough—

the memories no longer felt painful right now.

Not entirely.

Because sitting here with Liora beneath the stars somehow felt like continuing something unfinished instead of merely mourning what was lost.

The thought frightened him slightly.

Not because it was wrong.

Because it felt too right.

Liora eventually whispered softly against his chest,

"…what are you thinking about?"

Arin remained quiet briefly.

Then honestly answered,

"…that I don't want this moment to end yet."

The words escaped before he fully thought about them.

Silence followed immediately afterward.

Then slowly, Liora's arms tightened slightly around him.

Not enough to hide.

Just enough that he understood the answer she didn't say aloud.

The fire finally burned out completely sometime later.

The forest grew colder as midnight passed while moonlight continued spilling softly across the clearing around them.

Eventually exhaustion caught up to both of them quietly.

Liora's breathing gradually slowed while resting against him.

And not long afterward—

Arin's eyes closed too.

Neither moved away.

They fell asleep exactly like that.

Liora curled quietly against his chest beneath his arm while he remained leaning lightly against the tree behind them near the riverbank.

Peaceful.

For the first time in a very long time.

Morning arrived gently.

Sunlight filtered through the trees overhead while birds called softly across the forest surrounding their camp. The river reflected bright gold beneath the early light while cold morning air drifted through the clearing.

And directly beside the river—

Arin slowly woke first.

For several seconds he remained completely still while trying to understand why something warm rested against him.

Then memory returned instantly.

His eyes widened slightly afterward.

Because Liora was still asleep against him exactly where she had been the night before, her head resting peacefully against his chest while one hand lightly held onto the fabric near his shoulder.

And surrounding them—

every single member of the group stood awake already.

Watching.

Silently.

Smirking.

Riven looked moments away from death by suppressed laughter.

Selene crossed her arms with visible amusement while Aira looked equally entertained beside her. Kael merely looked tired in the specific way only someone exhausted by other people's romance could manage.

Darin actually looked impressed somehow.

Arin stared at all of them blankly.

"…why are you standing there like that."

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Riven finally broke first.

"Oh nothing."

A massive grin spread across his face afterward.

"We just wanted to witness history."

Liora slowly woke up seconds later because of the voices nearby.

Her eyes opened sleepily before immediately noticing the situation around them.

Then realizing she was still sitting in Arin's lap.

Then realizing everyone was staring directly at them.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

And then—

Selene lost the battle against laughter instantly.

Riven collapsed dramatically against a tree afterward while Kael physically covered his face with one hand.

Liora buried her face directly against Arin's chest in immediate defeat while Arin closed his eyes briefly like he regretted existing.

Unfortunately for both of them—

the teasing had only just begun.
