Chapter 36 - The Hostile Takeover

The golden ships of the Liquidators did not descend with the slow majesty of a library or the quiet dread of a redaction.

They dropped like falling anvils.

The massive, diamond-crusted claws at the base of the lead vessel opened, and a beam of pure, shimmering gold struck the surface of the Earth.

It didn't delete the city of Lumina Noir.

It appraised it.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

Liquidation Event: Sector Earth.

Total Asset Value: 1,450,230 Credits (Decreasing).

Action: Strip-Mining of All Bio-Logical Material.

Ren stood on the balcony of the Blue Rose, his hand still gripping the blackened leather book of the Editor.

He looked at the sky and saw floating holographic "Price Tags" appearing over every building, every person, and every drop of mana.

Anya had a tag over her head: [HIGH-QUALITY COMBAT DATA - 50,000 CREDITS].

Gage was labeled: [STABLE PHYSICAL CORE - 12,000 CREDITS].

"They're not even looking at us as people," Anya whispered, her silver light flickering as she saw her own price tag dropping.

"Ren, the air... it feels like it's being counted."

"That's because it is," Ren said.

His voice was a cold, sharp line of absolute logic.

"The Publisher has moved the sector from the 'Fiction' budget to the 'Material' ledger."

"They're not fighting a war. They're conducting an audit."

A massive, golden drone descended from the clouds.

It looked like a floating gold coin with four mechanical arms tipped with diamond saws.

It didn't aim for Ren.

It aimed for the Crystal Spire.

It began to slice into the building's base, intending to harvest the raw mana crystals for their market value.

"Stop it!" Gage roared, his golden obsidian armor flaring as he lunged at the drone.

He struck the machine with a thunderous blow.

Clang.

The golden drone didn't even dent.

A small holographic window popped up next to Gage's fist.

[ATTACK VALUE: 0.05 CREDITS. DAMAGE NEGATED BY ECONOMIC SHIELDING.]

Gage was thrown back by a shockwave of pure currency.

He hit the stone floor, gasping for air as his mana was suddenly "taxed" by the drone's proximity.

"You can't fight them with mana, Gage," Ren said.

He didn't move from his position.

He was watching the numbers.

"Their power is backed by the Galactic Treasury. As long as we are 'Debt-Heavy' assets, we cannot harm the Liquidators."

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

Sector Earth Debt: 50,000,000,000,000 Credits.

Reason: Failed Story Development, Resource Waste, Unauthorized Edits.

The Lead Liquidator a being of pure gold and light appeared on a massive projection in the sky.

He didn't wear robes or armor.

He wore a suit made of a hundred different alien currencies.

"Subject 004," the Liquidator said.

His voice was the sound of a billion coins clinking together.

"You have destroyed the intellectual property of the Great Library."

"You have turned a profitable tragedy into a disorganized mess."

"You are a bad investment. We are here to reclaim the principal."

Ren looked at the Liquidator.

He looked at the obsidian pen in his hand.

Then he looked at the "Price Tag" hovering over his own chest.

[SUBJECT 004: BROKEN PROTAGONIST - 0.01 CREDITS].

Ren let out a short, cold laugh.

"Strategy 109," Ren whispered.

"If you are worth nothing... you become the Short Seller."

Ren didn't try to increase his own value.

He reached into the blackened leather book of the Editor and pulled out the Original Script.

He didn't read it.

He began to Delete the Liquidator's credentials from the page.

"Elara, open a secure line to the Galactic Stock Exchange!" Ren commanded.

"Now!"

Elara stared at him in confusion.

"Ren, I don't have those coordinates! I'm an engineer, not a broker!"

"Don't look for coordinates! Look for the Audit Trail!" Ren roared.

"Every golden ship in the sky is currently being billed to the Publisher's account!"

Ren's fingers moved over the book like a pianist playing a crescendo.

He wasn't editing the world.

He was editing the Billing Information.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

Unauthorized Transaction: Re-Routing Liquidation Costs.

Payer: The Liquidator Lead.

Amount: 1,000,000,000 Credits per Second.

In the sky, the Lead Liquidator's golden suit suddenly flickered.

His projection began to turn a dull, leaden grey.

"What?! What have you done to my credit score?!" the being shrieked.

"My accounts are being drained!"

"The Liquidators are only here because it's profitable to kill us," Ren said.

His eyes were a brilliant, terrifying gold.

"I've just made the cost of this 'Audit' higher than the value of the Earth."

"Right now, you're losing more money every second you stay in our atmosphere than the entire sector is worth."

The golden ships in the sky began to stall.

The diamond claws stopped their sawing.

The Liquidators weren't retreating because they were afraid of Ren's power.

They were retreating because they were Over Budget.

"You... you monster!" the Liquidator yelled.

"You've bankrupted the entire Redaction Department!"

"I told you," Ren said.

"I'm a rough draft. I don't follow the ledger."

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

Liquidation Halted.

Reason: Economic Unviability.

Sector Status: Frozen Asset.

The golden ships began to ascend, disappearing into the rift as quickly as they had arrived.

The grey erasers were gone. The Publisher's fleet was gone.

Lumina Noir fell back into its cold, violet twilight.

Ren slumped against the balcony railing, the Editor's pen slipping from his numb fingers.

The grey scars on his skin were deeper now.

He had saved the world again, but he had done it by poisoning the very air of reality.

The Earth was no longer a story.

It was a Bad Debt.

Anya walked to him, her silver light nearly gone.

"Ren... we're safe. But the world feels... empty."

Ren looked at the city.

The buildings were still there, but they felt like hollow shells.

The people were staring at the sky with eyes that had seen their own price tags.

They knew the truth now.

They were just numbers in a ledger.

"It's empty because the 'Audience' has left," Ren said.

"They don't watch stories that are in bankruptcy."

Suddenly, the data slate in Ren's pocket vibrated.

It wasn't the Director. It wasn't Silas. It wasn't even the Author.

The sender's name was written in a font Ren had never seen.

[Sender: The Hostile Acquirer]

"Beautiful move, Ren. You crashed the market just to survive."

"The Publisher has officially sold the Earth to my firm for 0.01 Credits."

"I don't care about stories. I care about Patents."

"And you, Subject 004, are the most valuable patent in the galaxy."

Ren looked at the sky.

A single, black ship as large as a continent was moving into orbit.

It didn't have guns. It didn't have lights.

It was a massive, silent Brain.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

New Administrator Detected.

Identity: The Mind-Harvester.

Goal: Direct Extraction of the 'Sovereign Logic' Patent.

The black ship didn't fire a beam.

It emitted a thought.

Every person on Earth Anya, Gage, Elara, even Ren suddenly felt their memories being pulled toward the sky.

They weren't being deleted.

They were being Downloaded.
