The sharp sound of three distinct knocks echoed through the hallway of the Murphy household.
"Coming!" Madison called out, setting down her book and quickening her pace toward the front foyer.
She threw the heavy wooden door open, her words catching in her throat as she took in the tall, imposing figure standing on the porch.
"Yes? Can I help you?" she asked, her eyes narrowing slightly as she tried to place the familiar lines of his face.
The man offered a warm, nostalgic smile. "Madison?"
Her eyes widened in sudden recognition. "Uncle Benson?"
"So you do remember me after all," Benson chuckled, his voice hearty as he stepped across the threshold.
Madison nodded quickly, a smile breaking across her face.
Benson reached out, gently patting the top of her head with a familiar, familial warmth. "Look at you. You've grown so much since the last time I saw you. Anyway, is your father available?"
She nodded, gesturing toward the interior hallway. "He's in his study. Come in, Uncle Benson. You can rest in the living room while I go get him."
Benson gave a grateful nod, stepping into the comfortable space and taking a seat on the leather sofa. Madison headed up the carpeted stairs, navigating to the door at the end of the hall. She gave a polite knock against the wood.
"Come in," a deep voice called out.
Madison pushed the door open, finding her father sorting through a stack of architectural blueprints. Murphy looked up, a look of pleasant surprise softening his features. "Madison? You know you don't need to knock to enter my room, sweetheart."
Madison smiled softly, stepping into the study. "I know, Father. But you have a visitor. Uncle Benson is downstairs in the living room."
Murphy's hands stilled against the blueprints. He nodded slowly, a serious look passing over his face before he stood up and walked toward the door. As he passed Madison, he placed a gentle, reassuring hand on her head before heading down the staircase.
"Murphy!" Benson called out from the couch, standing up as his old friend descended. "You're finally back in town, and you didn't even bother to notify an old friend?"
"My apologies, Benson," Murphy replied, his tone warm but measured as they shared a firm handshake. "Things have been incredibly hectic with the recent corporate transitions."
Benson nodded understandingly. Murphy gestured toward the upper level. "Come up to the study. We can talk privately."
Murphy turned back toward the stairs, and Benson followed close behind. Madison remained standing near the landing, watching the two older men approach her position.
"Your daughter has really grown into a fine young woman, Murphy," Benson remarked, looking at Madison with a bright smile.
Murphy looked at his daughter, his eyes filled with quiet pride. "She has."
"So," Benson teased, nudging Murphy's shoulder as they reached the landing. "What are your thoughts on marrying her off anytime soon? Got any prospects?"
Murphy didn't miss a beat. "My priority is for her to finish her education first, then... However, if she happens to find someone she truly cares for before her studies are complete... I'll evaluate the young man to see if he's actually worthy of her."
Madison stood just a few feet away, her cheeks coloring slightly as she took in every word of her father's strict but protective policy.
"Ah, so Madison just needs to introduce the guy to you, and you'll handle the investigation?" Benson grinned.
Murphy gave a definitive nod. "Something like that."
Benson turned his gaze directly to Madison, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Well, kiddo? Is there anyone special you've been keeping a secret from us?"
Madison immediately shook her head in denial, crossing her arms. "No one, Uncle."
"Well, you shouldn't drag your feet for too long," Benson laughed, turning back to follow Murphy down the corridor. "The earlier you settle down, the better. I got married back when I was only in the tenth grade!"
Madison blinked in surprise, offering a slight nod to the absurd comparison. "Why the sudden rush, though?"
"Because life moves fast, kid!" Benson called back, laughing as he quickened his stride to catch up to Murphy, who was already four steps ahead of him entering the private office. "Anyway, take good care of yourself!"
The heavy mahogany door of the study clicked shut behind them, leaving Madison alone in the quiet hallway, a thoughtful expression crossing her face as she looked down at the floorboards.
