Chapter 21 - THE VISITOR FROM THE SOUTH

The strangers arrived at dusk.

I felt them before the patrol announced them a ripple of alertness through the pack bond, followed by curiosity, wariness, and something else. Recognition?

Kael was on his feet instantly.

"Stay close."

We headed to the border together.

---

Five wolves waited there.

Their leader was a woman tall, fierce, with silver-streaked hair and eyes the color of amber. She stood with easy confidence, her wolves fanned out behind her.

"Alpha Kael." She inclined her head. "I'm Alpha Sera of the Crescent Pack. We come from the southern territories."

Kael studied her. "I've heard of your pack. You're far from home."

"Trouble travels." Sera's eyes moved to me. Lingered. "This must be your human mate. The one who's been causing talk."

I stiffened. Kael's hand found my back.

"She's not 'talk.' She's my Luna. Speak of her with respect."

Sera smiled. Real smile, not sharp.

"Apologies. I meant no offense. Word travels fast among packsa human who's becoming wolf. That's rare. Special." She looked at me again. "I wanted to see for myself."

"Why?" I asked.

"Because my pack needs allies. Because the trouble I mentioned" She paused. "It's coming for all of us."

---

We gathered in the meeting clearing.

Sera told her story while her wolves rested. Poachers, she said. But not the kind we'd faced before. Organized. Armed with silver weapons. Killing not for sport, but for purpose.

"They're targeting packs. Destroying them systematically." Her voice was grim. "Three packs in the south are gone. Wiped out. Survivors scattered."

"Why?" Kael asked.

"We don't know. But they're moving north." She met his eyes. "They'll be here within months."

The clearing was silent.

Kael's hand found mine under the table. Through the bond, I felt his mind racing calculating, planning, worrying.

"Why come to us?" he asked.

"Because you're strong. Because you have allies the Shadowfang Pack. Because your Luna" She looked at me. "A human who's becoming wolf might be exactly what they're after."

Cold ran down my spine.

"What do you mean?"

"I don't know. But they're taking mates. Human mates who've been changed by the bond." She leaned forward. "They're not just killing. They're collecting."

---

The meeting lasted hours.

Plans were made. Scouts sent. Alliances strengthened. By the time Sera and her wolves left, the pack was on high alert.

Kael was silent on the walk home.

I felt his worry through the bond heavy, constant, grinding.

"Kael."

He stopped. Looked at me.

"You're thinking too loud."

"Sorry."

"Don't apologize. Talk to me."

He pulled me close.

"If they're after changed humans after you" His voice broke. "I can't lose you, Elena. I can't."

"You won't."

"You don't know that."

"I know you'll protect me. I know the pack will protect me. I know I'm stronger now than I've ever been." I touched his face. "I'm not the scared human who stumbled into your territory months ago."

"I know." He kissed my forehead. "But I'm still scared."

"Good." I pulled him closer. "Fear keeps us sharp. Keeps us alive."

"When did you get so wise?"

"Somewhere around the time I mated a wolf."

He laughed. The tension broke, just slightly.

"Let's go home."

"Home."

---

That night, he held me like I might disappear.

Not desperate. Not wild. Just... clinging. Like he couldn't quite believe I was real.

I understood. The news from Sera had shaken us both.

"What if they come?" I whispered.

"Then we fight."

"What if they win?"

"They won't."

"You don't know that."

He was quiet for a long moment.

"No. I don't." He turned me to face him. "But I know that whatever happens, we face it together. You and me. Always."

"Always."

He kissed me. Soft at first, then deeper.

"I need you," he breathed. "Need to feel you. Need to remember what I'm fighting for."

"Then have me."

---

He made love to me slowly that night.

Reverently. Every touch a promise. Every kiss a vow.

When he entered me, we both gasped.

"I love you," he whispered.

"I love you too."

"Forever."

"Forever."

We moved together, the bond blazing, until we came apart in each other's arms.

Afterward, he held me tight.

"Whatever comes," he said, "we face it together."

"Together."

"And when this is over when the danger passes we live. Really live."

"I'm counting on it."

He kissed my hair.

"Sleep, my love. I'll keep watch."

I closed my eyes, safe in his arms, and let sleep take me.
